Re: 2006 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Updates and Results

Day 5 Finals

China collected three gold and three bronze medals tonight, with several records as well. Wu Peng (CHN) won the men's 200m butterfly with a new Asian and championship record. He was delighted with this victory because he had to endure a toe fracture incurred during this meet and wasn't expecting to win. Makoto Muto (JPN) and Chen Yin (CHN) also finished 7th and 8th in this race.

Qi Hui (CHN) took her third individual gold medal of this meet by winning the women's 200m breaststroke final. Tara Kirk (USA) and Luo Nan (CHN) won the silver and bronze medals. Yang Yu (CHN) came within 0.04 seconds of her Asian record to clinch the women's 200m freestyle title. Park Tae Hwan (KOR), Zhang Lin (CHN) and Chen Ren (CHN) placed second, third and fifth in the men's 1500m freestyle final; Park also set a new Asian record to go with his two silver medals and thus signal to the world he will be a force to reckon with at Beijing in 2008. Gao Chang (CHN) won another bronze medal in the women's 50m backstroke.

Ouyang Kunpeng (CHN) placed 4th and set a new Asian record in the men's 200m backstroke whilst his team mate Zhang Bodong (CHN) came in 6th. Zhou Yafei (CHN) and Jiao Liuyang (CHN) came in 5th and 6th in the women's 100m butterfly final. China shattered their national record to finish 5th in the men's 4x100m medley relay whilst Kazakhstan placed 8th.

Ryan Lochte (USA) was simply amazing with two world records in the pool on the final night of competition. He became the first man to go under 1:50 in the men's 200m backstroke, then became the first to dip below 50 seconds in the 100m backstroke with his lead-off relay leg. Ryk Neethling (RSA) captured two gold medals tonight in the men's 100m freestyle and 100m IM, having already won the 200m freestyle on the first day. Yury Prilukov (RUS) showed that he may be ready to challenge the Aussie men in distance freestyle by taking down Grant Hackett's championship record in the men's 1500m freestyle final. Libby Lenton (AUS) also added two gold medals (50m freestyle and 100m butterfly) to the three gold medals won earlier in the meet. Oleg Lisogor (UKR) and Janine Pietsch (GER) rewrote championship records in their respective events -- the men's 50m breaststroke and women's 50m backstroke.
