posticon 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

The 2006 Japan Nationals, which also serves as selection trials for 2006 Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacific Championships and 2007 Melbourne World Championships, will be held from 20th April to 23rd April. Most of the big names in Japan Swimming will be present.

Both Olympic champions Kosuke Kitajima and Ai Shibata are targetting the World Championship A Standards whilst Tomomi Morita is focussing on his 100m backstroke and is aiming to swim under 54 seconds. Reiko Nakamura wants to lower her 200m backstroke Japanese record. Yuko Nakanishi also wants to reach the A Standard. Takashi Yamamoto is looking forward to race against his successors Ryuchi Shibata and Takeshi Matsuda; he has trained for both 100m and 200m butterfly but he can't tell which event he will excel in. Takeshi Matsuda wants to focus on strong swims and better his own records; his starts, speed and underwater dolphin kicks have improved and will help him achieve his goals.

Well, the selection standards are out and they are very tough to reach. No wonder the top Japanese swimmers opted to skip the Shanghai Short-course Worlds and concentrate fully on their trials.

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Day 1 Heats

Ryo Takayasu, the Asian short-course record holder of two men's butterfly events, has transferred his record-breaking feats to the 50m pool. He set a new Asian long-course record of 23.94 seconds in the men's 50m butterfly morning heats and is expected to lower that record further in the final tonight. Sachiko Yamada, holder of four Asian records, cruised into the women's 400m freestyle final with a good heats time of 4:11.24. Olympic champion Ai Shibata also moved into the final with her 4:13.70.

The men's 200m breaststroke is traditionally a strong event for Japan; the top seven qualifiers all went under 2:14. Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima and World Championship medalist Genki Imamura clocked 2:13.12 and 2:13.16 to qualify second and third overall; Yuta Suenaga was the top qualifier with a time of 2:12.77.

Takamitsu Kojima became the fourth Asian swimmer to go under 50 seconds in the men's 100m freestyle event. He clocked 49.92 seconds in the heats to lead the qualifiers. Kojima anchored a 4x100m medley relay team to set the Japanese short-course national record in 2004.

Day 1 Finals

Ryo Takayasu lowered his Asian record to 23.91 seconds in the men's 50m butterfly final. The top four swimmers in the men's 200m breaststroke final all went under 2:13, with Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima denied a medal. Daisuke Kimura (2:12.54) and Genki Imamura (2:12.57) repeated their top two placings last year when they bounced Kitajima from representing Japan in this event, except this time Kimura won gold and Imamura won silver; Yuta Suenaga was third with his 2:12.58. Takamitsu Kojima was unable to match his heats time but still touched the wall first with a time of 50.16; short-course national record holder Daisuke Hosokawa finished next with a time of 50.39 whilst long-course national record Hisayoshi Sato was only sixth with a disappointing 50.70 swim.

800m freestyle Asian record holder Sachiko Yamada timed 4:09.63 to take the women's 400m freestyle title. Ai Shibata placed second with her 4:12.37. Fujino Maiko won the women's 400m IM title in 4:45.86 whilst 16 year-old Izumi Kato took silver in 4:47.90; Kato tried to chase Maiko in the freestyle leg and sliced Maiko's lead to two seconds. Rising high school breaststroke star Asami Kitagawa continued her winning ways with her 2:27.90 in the 200m breaststroke final. Three other swimmers went under 2:29 -- Yoshimi Miwa (2:28.41), Nanaka Tamura (2:28.52) and Fumiko Kawanabe (2:28.95).

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Comments from swimmers after Day 1 Finals

Sachiko Yamada said she was pleased with her 400m freestyle swim, which went according to her race strategy. Ai Shibata wasn't satisfied with her strokes but wanted to put her disappointment behind her and look forward to the 800m freestyle race. The joint champions in the women's 50m butterfly were also unhappy with their times because they were planning to take down the national record before the race; Yuka Kato felt she didn't swim her best time but was relieved the first race was over; Ayako Doi was already thinking about how to use her speed to her advantage in the 100m race, where she's going for the Japanese record.

Ryo Takayasu was very excited about his record-breaking swims; his goal is the 100m butterfly and he felt his current speed can help him get ahead in the first 50m and win the race. He looked forward to race against Olympic medalist Takashi Yamamoto and will strive to swim a fast time. Fujino Maiko was visibly upset with her 400m IM winning time. She said, "I planned to go under 4:40 but not only did I fail to achieve that, I did not even improve my personal best of 4:41, so this swim is definitely disappointing. " Maiko thought even if she were to swim a slow time, at least she would go under the selection standard (B) of 4:44, but 4:45 was simply unacceptable to her. She admitted she was confident in lowering her time in the final after swimming her heats, but she struggled in the freestyle leg. Maiko planned to swim well in the 200m IM and make the Pan Pacs team. She also hoped to qualify for the Melbourne Worlds at this meet and train well for the Beijing Olympics. Takamitsu Kojima was fine with his 100m freestyle victory but was disappointed he failed to break the Japanese record, having dipped below 50 seconds in the heats. He also said, "I aim to rewrite the national record this year, using the selection standard (A) as my target. To be competitive at the Worlds, I have to go below 49 seconds." Kojima will work hard to improve his first 50m speed and his endurance for the back-half of the race.

Asami Kitagawa concentrated on her own race and was confident of winning the final, having qualified first in the heats. Her motivation, which she learnt from senior swimmer Tomoko Hagiwara, was to test her limits and stretch her own capabilities. She knew she's still far from being competitive among the world's best swimmers but hoped to reach that level soon. Daisuke Kimura was delighted with his unexpected victory in the men's 200m breaststroke final and will strive to compete against the likes of Kitajima, Imamura and Suenaga in the shorter races. Genki Imamura was targetting Kitajima in the race; when he passed Kitajima in the final stretch, he thought he had won but Kimura and Suenaga swept in rapidly and he finished second by a whisker. "My first 100m went according to plan but I was too rushed with my strokes at the end of the race. I hope to swim my best at the Worlds next year and will train very hard for that meet." Kitajima missed out on a medal and was deeply disappointed. However, this meet isn't over yet and he's going to focus his mind on his next races -- the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Day 2 Heats

The backstroke morning heats churned out some very fast times. Tomomi Morita set a new national record in the men's 100m backstroke with a time of 54.12 seconds, just 0.03 seconds off the Asian record held by Ouyang Kunpeng (CHN). His closest competitors were Junichi Miya****a (54.42) and Masafumi Yamaguchi (54.89), the same two medallists behind him at the short-course Japan Open. Ito Hanae moved within striking distance of the national record (1:00.55) with her fast 1:00.79 in the heats; it's also the first time she went under 1:01. Reiko Nakamura, fourth at the Montreal Worlds in this event, wasn't too far behind with her 1:01.08 so the final should be a tight race with both swimmers likely to challenge the Japanese record.

Other good swims in the heats:

Men's 100m backstroke - Takashi Nakano (55.23)
Men's 200m butterfly - Ryuichi Shibata (1:56.16)
Men's 200m butterfly - Ryusuke Sakata (1:57.84)
Men's 200m butterfly - Makoto Muto (1:58.00)
Men's 200m butterfly - Takeshi Matsuda (1:58.16)
Women's 200m freestyle - Maki Mita (2:00.32)
Women's 200m butterfly - Yano Yurie (2:09.58)
Women's 200m butterfly - Yuko Nakanishi (2:10.16)

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Day 2 Finals

While no swimmer went under the World Championship A selection standard on the first day, a whole bunch of top Japanese swimmers qualified for the 2007 Melbourne World Championships tonight. Tomomi Morita's Asian record swim of 53.85 seconds in the men's 100m backstroke was the highlight of the evening finals; he became the first Asian swimmer to swim below 54 seconds in this event. Masafumi Yamaguchi was second in 54.52 seconds and he also qualified for the 2007 Worlds. Junichi Miya****a's heats time of 54.42 was also under the A standard but he only finished third in the final (54.67). Ito Hanae (1:00.65) and Reiko Nakamura (1:00.88) both swam below 1:01 and below the A standard in the women's 100m backstroke final.

Asian short-course record holder Ryuichi Shibata clocked a fine 1:55.27 to defeat Olympic silver medalist Takashi Yamamoto (1:57.02) and Worlds silver medalist Takeshi Matsuda (1:57.02) in the men's 200m butterfly final; only Shibata's time bettered the A standard in this final. Shibata was the third Japanese swimmer to go under 1:56 seconds in this event last September with his World No. 2 time of 1:55.11. In the women's 200m butterfly final, Yurie Yano upstaged Olympic and Worlds medalist Yuko Nakanishi to win in a time of 2:08.34. Both Yano and Nakanishi (2:08.55) qualified for the Worlds next year. Kenichi Doki took the men's 1500m freestyle title with a time of 15:17.03, which was also a Japanese high school record.

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Comments from swimmers after Day 2 finals

Tomomi Morita was very relieved he finally crack the 54-second barrier. He tried to ignore any pressure and harness any negative energy to use as his strengths. Morita noted what to improve from his race in the morning heats and worked on his weaker areas. He's not sure what his 53.85 swim can translate to at major international meets but his target is to win a gold medal.

Ryuichi Shibata was very satisfied with his 200m butterfly race and how he defeated his two prominent opponents (Olympic and World Championship medallists). Recognizing the top-notch endurance of Yamamoto and Matsuda, Shibata flew very swiftly right from the starting blocks to gain an early lead in the first half of the race and maintain it from there. Shibata aims to swim fast at the Worlds next year to compensate for his subpar performances last year; he also wanted to medal at the Pan Pacs this summer and also rewrite the Japanese national record. Now that he has conquered his tough local rivals, he has set his sights on challenging the best swimmers in the world.

Ito Hanae was pleased with her personal best time in the women's 100m backstroke but was regretful she didn't break the Japanese record. She swam her own race, noting the importance of her start. Hanae hopes to win a medal at the Melbourne Worlds. Reiko Nakamura, who place second behind Hanae, was unhappy with her finish which lacked the pace she wanted. Nakamura is aiming to swim 28 seconds in the 50m backstroke tomorrow and set a new Japan record of 2:08 in the 200m backstroke on the last day. Yurie Yano stormed home in the last stretch of the women's 200m butterfly final to defeat Yuko Nakanishi and she was quite stunned by her victory although very happy with the result. She also hopes to reach the final and win a medal at the Melbourne Worlds.

Kenichi Doki swam a much better race in the men's 1500m freestyle final than the heats yesterday. He dropped behind in the second half of the race in the heats so he set a quick pace right from the blocks and went out fast for the first half in the final. He's aiming to make the final and swim a personal best at the Vancouver Pan Pacs. Hidemasa Sano was targetting the Japanese record in the final but unfortunately lost some ground towards the end of the race. However, he was adamant he can further improve on his freestyle and would strive to set a new national record in the remaining 200m IM event.

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Day 3 Heats

Masafumi Yamaguchi, who already secured a place on Japan's World Championship team, set a new national record of 25.53 seconds in the men's 50m backstroke heats. Tomomi Morita and the previous record holder Junichi Miya****a were not far behind with times of 25.59 and 25.64.

Mai Nakamura, who pulled out from the 100m event, led the qualifiers in the women's 50m backstroke with her 28.91. Takeshi Matsuda eased into the men's 400m freestyle final with his heats time of 3:52.88, more than three seconds faster than his nearest competitor. After failing to qualify in the 200m race, Kosuke Kitajima tackled the shortest 50m race and moved into the final ranked third overall (28.60).

Re: 2006 Japan Nationals (Selection trials for Doha Asian Games, Pan Pacs and 2007 Melbourne Worlds)

Day 3 Finals

Another four swimmers made the team today for the Melbourne Worlds. Tomomi Morita continued his record-breaking feats with a new national record (25.39) in the men's 50m backstroke final; Junya Koga (25.49) also went under the record set by Masafumi Yamaguchi (25.53) in the morning heats; both Morita and Koga reached the A standard. Yamaguchi equalled his record in the final but only placed third whilst Kazuki Ohbayashi set a new high school record of 25.55 to place fourth.

Sydney Olympic medalist Mai Nakamura set a new national record of 28.56 seconds in the women's 50m backstroke after pulling out from the 100m event yesterday. Reiko Nakamura, the 200m backstroke Olympic bronze medalist, bagged a silver medal with her 28.85 and is looking good to excel in the longer distance event. 100m backstroke champion Ito Hanae came in third with her 29.00 swim.

Asian record holder Sachiko Yamada (8:28.07) obliterated the field to win by more than eight seconds in the women's 800m freestyle final . She also swam within the A standard by 0.66 seconds to qualify for the 2007 World Championships. Another Asian record holder Takeshi Matsuda took the men's 400m freestyle title in similar fashion; he won by more than five seconds but unlike Yamada, he failed to reach the A standard by 0.38 seconds. Kosuke Kitajima (28.30) finally medalled by finishing second in the men's 50m breaststroke final, behind Hiromasa Sakimoto (28.27). Asami Kitagawa upstaged favourite Fujino Maiko in the women's 200m IM, winning with a personal best time of 2:15.14. Kitagawa was 3.5 seconds after the backstroke leg but used her powerful breaststroke skills to trim Maiko's lead by 2.16 seconds before powering home to win by 0.87 seconds.

List of qualifiers :

Men's 50m backstroke - Tomomi Morita (25.39) and Junya Koga (25.49).
Women's 800m freestyle - Sachiko Yamada (8:28.07).
Women's 50m backstroke - Mai Nakamura (28.56).
