FIFA World Cup (Germany 2006) Highlights
Quarter-finals
France stunned defending champions Brazil 1-0 in the quarter-finals, after already upset Spain earlier. The winning goal came from an ambush where Thierry Henry stole in from behind the other players to volley Zinedine Zidane's freekick. Germany delighted the home crowd with a win against Argentina through penalty kicks whilst Portugal eliminated England, also through penalty kicks. Italy crushed Ukraine 3-0 for a semi-final showdown with Germany. Italian defender Gianluca Zambrotta unleashed a blistering drive from afar which blasted straight into the net to give Italy an early lead. Luca Toni then dived low and headed in Italy's second goal from a corner kick. Toni then scored again in the 69th minute to put Italy beyond reach.

Re: FIFA World Cup (Germany 2006) Highlights
Semi-finals
1. Italy 2 Germany 0 (Full time 0-0)
In this semi-final match at Dortmund stadium, Germany had more variety in their set-up for shots at goal but most of the time, they fumbled their finishing touches. The Italians weren't interesting for the full-time but picked up pace and started to attack with flair right from extra time; apparently, Italy did not want to leave the outcome to penalty kicks.
Germany squandered a great chance to go ahead in the 33rd minute of the first half, Miroslav Klose blasted his shot a tad too high after some nice combinatorial tactics and a brilliant cross from the German players to leave only the Italian goalkeeper defending a shot at goal.
The second half started off with some thrilling plays from both sides after 10 minutes; both goalkeepers also made some nice saves thus far. After that, things started going downhill for a while, the highly anticipated clash between two favourites not quite living up to its promise. In the 81st minute, Germany had an excellent chance for a breakthrough when they won a free-kick just outside the penalty box but failed to convert; the foul itself, though tame, was actually within the penalty box but the referee decided against a penalty kick. Germany piled on the pressure with minutes remaining but couldn't break the Italian defense so at full-time (with stoppage time), the score was <Germany 0 Italy 0>.
The extra time started well, Italy penetrated Germany's defense in the very first minute and had a great chance to score but was denied by the goalpost. A minute later, Italy had another opportunity when a shot at goal clipped the crossbar. Both teams had their chances subsequently but no goal was scored. Just when everyone's already looking towards the spot kicks, the Italians amazingly knocked in two goals in the last two minutes of extra time to bounce home team Germany out of the World Cup. An unmarked Fabio Grosso, who's very well-positioned, curved in a beautiful goal past the Germans off a smart pass from his team mate Pirlo. The Italians capitalised on Germany's sinking hearts for a sudden breakaway for the second goal -- another great pass from Gilardino to an unmarked Del Piero and he sliced the ball away from the German goalkeeper's reach to sink into the top-right corner of the net.
2. France 1 Portugal 0
France's winning goal came from a penalty kick by Zinedine Zidane in the first half. Thierry Henry was brought down by Ricardo Carvalho within the penalty area in the 31st minute. Portugal staged a better fight in the second half and had a good chance to equalise through a free kick but the shot was pushed over the net by France's goalkeeper Fabian Barthez.

Re: FIFA World Cup (Germany 2006) Highlights
2006 World Cup Final
Italy 6 France 4 ( Full-time score - 1-1 )
The 2006 World Cup final was decided through a penalty shoot-out which Italy won 6-4. Zinedine Zidane gave France an early lead through a penalty in the 6th minute, after Florent Malouda was brought down by Marco Materazzi within the box. The Italians equalised in the 19th minute through a header from Materazzi, who made amends for his earlier error. These two scorers from both teams later clashed in a conflict in extra time; Materazzi appeared to have insulted Zidane and Zidane made a shocking rebuttal -- he headbutted Materazzi ! Zidane was given the red card and sent off the field in the last World Cup match of his career.
