Anime

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that most of us here are into anime so I figured I'd start a thread. If this thread get's popular enough, I will give anime it's own section but we will just have to wait and see.

I think I will start by reccomending some anime that I really like.

FLCL of course. Not only for the music, but the animation itself is some of the best I have ever seen. And c'mon, how could you not love Haruko?

My favortie anime though is Outlaw Star. I love this series for some odd reason, maybe it's because it's the first one that I really got into. It's not the best animated (art work) series, but I love all of the characters, especially Gene and the story just hooked me. I think it will always be my favorite.

Other reccomends
Trigun (A very close second favorite)
Wolf's Rain (another very close second, I LOVE this series)
Ebichu (hillarious)
Escaflowne (beautiful)
Chobits
Tenchi Muyo (all of it)
Vandred
The Slayers
Cowboy Bebop (of course)
Love Hina
Nadesico
Those Who Hunt Elves (because it's so funny)
My Dear Marie

I'm sure there are more that I haven't mentioned so if I think if them, I will.

The worst series I have seen so far is Pumi Pumi Poemy all though that might be an unfair statement because I literally couldn't bring myself to finish it. The animation is good but that's about all I can say for it. All the main character does is run around like a chicken with her head cut off and she yells EVERYTHING she says. It's definitly an ecchi so there is a hell of a lot of fan service so if you are into that sort of thing and decide to watch it, just make sure you turn down the volume because that screaming she does is just going to ruin any visuals anyway. Also, the fact that they had two 10 year old girls in a sexual situtation didn't sit well with me at all. This is one ****ed up series.

Re: Anime

Some of my all time favorites:

FLCL
Evangelion
Azumanga Daioh
Great Teacher Onizuka
Cowboy Bebop
RahXephon
Trigun
Escaflowne
Rurouni Kenshin
Hellsing
Wolf's Rain
One Piece
Fullmetal Alchemist
Haibane Ranmei

Mellie, I agree that Puni Puni Poemy was over the top a little too much, but that is what it was intended to be; a completely over the top parody of anime clichés. I would reccommend Koshi Rikudo's other more popular series, Excel Saga. It's basically the same type of comedy (a parody of anime clichés), only much funnier and much less offensive.

Re: Anime

Some of my all-time favorites include:

FLCL for obvious reasons. I didn't think it was absolutely perfect, but I liked it quite a lot.

Trigun is one of my very top series, too. Great blend of action, comedy and drama, combined with solid storytelling. Also, I can identify with Vash because of his resolve to avoid killing other people. Not perfect either, but damn good.

Noir. I LOVED Noir. By my personal criteria, Noir is the most perfect anime I have ever watched.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. The last two episodes didn't do it for me at ALL, but combined with End of Evangelion, the series + movie as a whole works for me.

Cowboy Bebop seems to be universally worshipped. I do like it, but I got the sense that it rode on style and music. The episodes are interesting individually, but I didn't feel that most of them tied together into a strong story arc or kept with the theme of secret pasts, which sort of bothered me.

I haven't finished Great Teacher Onizuka yet, but I love it. It's well-written and cracks me up.

Hellsing was awesome until Incognito was introduced. Up until the final few episodes, Hellsing would have been one of my top picks.

RahXephon wasn't bad, but Ayato's character (or lack of) didn't really work for me. He wasn't consistent - he responded to any given situation the way the writers needed him to. I thought the animation and character designs were well-done, though.

I watched a good chunk of Chobits, and read the mangas. I thought it was decent, despite not being my type of anime.

Bad animes? Well. Mellie and I obviously don't have the same tastes, because I really didn't like Wolf's Rain at all. I also saw a few episodes of Vampire Princess Miyu before realizing that it was pretty bad and deciding not to rent any more DVDs of it.

Re: Anime

Man, I haven't really been into anime for a while. There just isn't that much new stuff coming out that floors me like it used to. But I still love my old favourites.

Cowboy Bebop (duh) - I can see what Joyeuse is saying, but I don't think the show was ever intended to have an overarching storyline, save for the plot threads that wrapped up in the last couple of episodes. It could be argued that the style was the story.

Macross Plus - Top Gun with transforming robots, and another killer soundtrack from Ms. Yoko Kanno.

Ruruoni Kenshin - Only the OVAs and the Kyoto Arc. I still have tapes in the plastic cause I didn't want to watch past the second season.

Giant Robo the Animation - Not without its faults, but just an awesome retro-style giant robot OVA. Great soundtrack by the Warsaw Philharmonic, too.

Miyazaki - From Castle of Cogliostro to Spirited Away, the man's work is a jewel. Personal favourite is Totoro, seconded by Nausicaa.

Nadesico - Props to Mellie for representing this show. Far too underrated, and probably the first dub I ever heard that I though actually did a good job.

Satoshi Kon - Perfect Blue was awesome, Millenium Actress not great but still interesting, Tokyo Godfathers was just a sweet little story.

Evangelion - blah, blah, blah, lol.

Utena (movie AND tv)- So many roses.....

That's off the top of my head. I loved Trigun til the end (a freaking clip show at episode 26?! Would it not make sense to assume I know the deal between Vash and Knives if I'm watching the last episode?!), Paranoia Agent seems pretty cool so far, looking forward to getting my hands on Samurai Champloo, but really, not much of the contemporary stuff holds my interest, and I have enough expensive hobbies as it is. I can't shell out for 6-disc sets, especially when they run for 200 bucks in Canada.

Still, she's my first love, and I have the kanji for 'Akira' tattooed down my back as a testament of my supreme geekness and undying fandom.

Me and my old girlfried used to go cosplaying in Japan all the time. She always made me dress up like Vash though. I think she had a thing for him or something.
