What is (The) Pillows you ask? Read on.
The Pillows are a Japanese rock band who have put out some of the best alternative rock, jazz and pop the world has to offer. Formed in 1989 by original bassest Kenji Ueda (who is no longer with the band) The Pillows released their first album Pantomime in 1990 and have gone on to release over 15 albums, 20 plus singles and 7 DVDs. The Pillows also provided 90% of the soundtrack for the anime FLCL. The producer of this anime was a big fan of The Pillows and asked them if he could feature their music through out the series. The Pillows agreed and the anime eventually was aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim which helped The Pillows gain a lot of popularity in the United States. A tribute album called Sychronized Rockers has also been released in honor of their 15th aniversary and includes bands like Bump of Chicken, Noodles and Mr. Children doing covers of The Pillows music.
The Pillows are:
Sawao Yamanaka: Guitar, Vocals, principle song writer and T-shirt designer for the band. Sawao was born December 7th 1968 and is a Hinase Hokkaido graduate. After he graduated, he began working as a silkscreen printer and gained a lot of knowledge on making t-shirts while doing this. Then, at the age of 20, he moved to Tokyo to start a music career and formed a band called Coinlocker Babies before joining The Pillows in 1989. Besides being The Pillows front man he's also directed some short video clips for The Pillows such as Stalker and an alternate Strange Chameleon clip, both of which appear on the WALKIN' ON THE SPIRAL DVD. He also directed a claymation segment for the bands DVD/VHS We Have a Theme Song. Sawao is no stranger to side projects either. In 2000 he got together with his brother Hidetoshi Yamanaka and formed a duo called Spiky Brothers. Spiky Brothers released two independant cassette tapes, Spiky Love and Spiky Lane which, unfortunatly are no longer available for sale. Sawao also heads up his own record label called Delicious Label and has released a couple of solo tracks featured on two Delicious Label compilation CDs, My Room is Delicious Volume One and Volume Two and has signed such artists as Noodles, Hermit and Nine Miles, Yoshiaki Manabe's side project, to the Delicious Label. Sawao also made an acting debut. He appeared in "Colors of Life" a movie about a rock club in Japan called Club Que. Sawao plays a suit clad crime boss who has no problems kicking people down stars, kidnapping and even stabbing people. I'm not entirely sure how much of this movie is fiction or how much of it (if any) is based on a true story. Needless to say, even though it's not available with sub titles, it's a pretty interesting watch.
Yoshiaki Manabe: Guitar. Yoshiaki Manabe, other wise known as "Pee", was born October 2nd, 1962 and is also a Hinase Hokkaido graduate. Manabe was the lead guitar player for an 80's band called Persia before joining The Pillows in 1989. He is also a lover of Reggae music and a big fan of Bob Marly. He has a side project/Reggae act called Nine Miles which was named after the Jamaican town that Bob Marly was born in. Nine Miles has released two albums on the Delicious Label (Sawao Yamanaka's record label) Nine Miles debut called Solomonic Polar Bear released in 2001 and and a follow up called Return of the Solomonic Polar Bear released in 2003. Both of these CDs are available for sale at the Delicious Label offical site.
Shinichiro Sato: Drums. Shinichiro or "Shin-chan" was born on August 16th, 1964 and is a Hinase Ibaraki graduate. Not only can Shin-chan bang out a wicked beat on the drums, he also plays some guitar and is rumored to play the ukelele which from what I've gathered about his "class clown" personality, doesn't surprise me one bit. Just like the The Pillows other members, Shin-chan also has a side Project, a band called O.P. King. O.P. KING plays a blend of 60's rock and roll and rythm and blues and their members include YO KING on Vocals, rythm guitar and harmonica, and Okuda Tamio on lead guitar. They released a self titled mini album in July 2003 and a DVD called End of Summer which was released in September 2003. End of Summer is a live show recorded at Japan's LIQUID ROOM. They also have quite a few t-shirts available and some cool looking wrist bands. You can find out more about O.P. King at their official site. Shin-chan recently started drumming for Japanese band The Pees who did Pari No Josei Mari on the Pillows tribiute album, Sychronized Rockers.
The Pillows have not had an official bass player since founder Kenji Ueda left the band after their fourth album White Incarnation was released 1992. The rest of the band then un officially replaced him with Tatsuya Kashima (who some say is the best bass player The Pillows ever worked with) until 1999 when Jun Suzuki took over as guest bassest for the band and he is still working with them today.
A little more about them.
Kenji Ueda: Ueda was born August 20th, 1965. He is the founder of The Pillows and the only bass player to be an official member of the band. He left the band in 1993 and formed his own record label called Bumble Bee Records. Since it tells the story of The Pillows begining, Ueda is heavily featured in The Pillows latest DVD release WALKIN' ON THE SPIRAL.
Tatsuya Kashima: Kashima was born August 20th 1963 and played bass for The Pillows from 1994 until 1999. He is also featured in the live segments of The Pillows DVD/VHS HELLO AND WELCOME TO BUBBLETOWN'S HAPPY ZOO and also makes a very small cameo appearance in Sawao Yamananka's Stalker clip featured in WALKIN' ON THE SPIRAL. Kashima is a member of the band Nino Trinca signed to Kenji Ueda's label, Bumble Bee Records.
Jun Suzuki: Jun Suzuki was born July 18th 1968 and has been playing bass for The Pillows since 1999. He is also the first bass player since Ueda to appear in an official Pillows promotional video (Terminal Heaven's Rock) and fronts his own band Fragments on Sawao Yamanaka's Delicious Label.

WALKIN ON THE SPIRAL ~DVD~ Released Septmeber 16th, 2004
This DVD is unique because while it features many live clips and some promotional clips (most of the PVs are alternate clips directed by Sawao Yamanaka) all most none of the clips are complete songs. It's basicaly a history of the bands early years and features many interviews with the band and some people who have worked with them over the years. The live clips and PVs are very entertaining as are some of the interviews (which are all in Japanese) and it really gives fans a lot of insight into the bands earier years. I don't have a list of songs featured on the DVD yet but as soon as I do, I will include them here.

Fan Sites
Instant Music This is a great English Fan Site by Terra. She does a really wonderful job with it and in my opinion, it's the best English fan site about The Pillows there is. She also has a pretty cool message board.
Check out Little Buster's forum Terminal Heaven. He has a HUGE list of translated Pillows lyrics and he's one hell of a nice guy. Also, you do have to join in order to view the site but that only takes a couple of minutes. Besides, it's well worth it just to see the collection of translated lyrics he has over there.
There is also Planet Pillows, a British fan site. However it has not been updated since December 2003. They also have a message board that has been having some promblems lately. Planet Pillows Message Board Ithica (the owner of PP) is back and kicked out the new so-called mods. We will see how long he decides to maintain the board. However, he still hasn't updated the main site.
If any one knows of any other sites they would like to see added to this list, please PM me with the url.
Special thanks to Frog for pointing out that I forgot to list Turn Back in the discography section which has now been corrected.
