Story Excerpt
I get the urge to write every now and then and some years ago, I had a dream that inspired this story. It is finished, but still needs editing. Something I may never get around to as, let's face it, this will never be published as canon material for Star Trek.
This excerpt has a little help in the writing as there is a section of it that was taken from the first Voyager novel, "The Caretaker." It was of course interpreted to fit my story.
Anyway, as this part of the message board hasn't seen much action, I thought that I would share this with all of you. I don't normally share my stories with anyone and there is only one other person that I've shared this with aside from my hubby...
I'm open for comments... ::grins:: Just be easy on me... I'm only a novice writer...
Anyway... Enjoy!!

Excerpt from "The Long Journey Home" Fan Fic by Heather Lane
This is a flashback scene. Tom Paris is recalling his first moments when he came on board Voyager
He (Tom Paris) and Ensign Harry Kim, the operations officer (now his best friend), had just walked through the portal onto the sleek ship. His duffel on one shoulder, he looked around inspecting the sleek grey halls and bright corridors. The feeling was somewhat familiar to him but for someone just getting out of prison, that memory still seemed far away.
"This must feel pretty routine to you by now," Paris heard Kim say. "Coming on board a new ship....."
A strange crooked grin came across his face.
"Not exactly," was his reply. The odd response reassured the young ensign somehow, who was evidently nervous and anxious about his first mission.
"I guess your first posting is the one you remember most. When I came on board this morning, I couldn't help it....I got goose bumps."
Paris smiled.
"Yeah, I remember feeling like that." he said with the warmth of the Starfleet memories that flooded his mind.
Suddenly Kim didn't feel so foolish now.
"Have you checked in yet?" he asked.
Paris shook his head. Harry smiled
and waved for him to follow.
"Come on, I'll take you to sickbay."
"Sickbay?" Paris asked curiously, stopping long enough to shift his bag from one shoulder to the next. He hurried after the young ensign. "Why don't we check in on the bridge?"
"Uh, I'm not sure exactly," In fact, the thought hadn't even occurred for him to ask. "I haven't been to the bridge yet," He admitted, "But Dr. Leonard is always in sickbay. She's the most senior officer next to The Captain and First Officer Cavit."
Paris stopped. Now there was a name he hadn't heard in a while. An affectionate smile crossed his face.
"Not Dr. Kathleen Leonard by any chance?" he inquired, but his companion merely shrugged.
"I don't know her first name," he answered, "I only know her as Dr. Leonard."
Tom started off again, nodding slowly.
"She's real nice," he added, "and beautiful, too. Then again I haven't met a Betazoid who wasn't. Those black eyes will get you every time."
Tom's heart lurched.
"You can say that again," he wanted to tell him as he felt a warm familiar chill creep down his spine. His heart began to race at anticipating of seeing her again. It was Kathleen all right. Fresh out of the Academy, Harry wouldn't know a half Betazoid from a whole one.
Kathleen's mother was from Betazed. Warmhearted and friendly, he liked her right away. She was an extraordinary woman. It was obvious as to where Kathleen got her beauty, she looked good for her age and had the sensuous charm to match. Her father, on the other hand, was a stern Admiral much like his own father. Always domineering and serious and he made it a point to avoid any confrontation.
"Well...here it is," Kim said as though stating the obvious had been his major course of study since joining Starfleet. Paris answered with a grin and a nod before stepping inside.
The infirmary was small though well equipped, hardly busy yet with most of the crew settling away in their quarters. Dr. Leonard was busying herself with an array of incomprehensible computer panels against one wall just as she'd been since Kim walked in only a few hours before. Something about her smooth features and pleasant smile struck Harry as friendly and warm right away. Tom felt his heart begin to pound even harder. She was still just as beautiful as he'd remembered. She hadn't changed much physically. Long black hair, piercing dark eyes and a smile that would melt the biggest ice field in the galaxy. He was suddenly as nervous as if he'd just laid eyes on her for the first time. In a way, it was. This was the first time he'd seen her since their break up over a year ago. He'd been in prison ever since and hadn't had the chance to keep in touch. He hid his feelings deep within him. A skill she taught him long ago. She'd sense his emotions easily and right now, after all this time, he wasn't sure making his feelings known was such a good idea. He watched, entranced as she gestured to her Vulcan assistant, T'prena.
"Run a level three diagnostic," she was saying, "just to be sure."
She turned to call something after her as she moved away when her eyes caught Kim and Paris in the doorway. Paris saw from the darkening expression of cold malice on her face that she was glad to see him. He smiled just the same. Totally unaware of Harry, she stared at him long and hard. A mixture of surprise, pain and anger crept into those beautiful orbs, but she never said a word. He could tell she was holding back for Harry's sake. She was never one to make an unnecessary scene.
"Can I help you?" she asked softly, her voice soothing.
"Tom Paris reporting on board, ma'am," He announced with an easy confidence even though his heart was about to leap from his chest.
She eyed him curiously the impending question written all over her features.
"I'm here as....." he began.
"...the observer..." she finished, breathing the words with utter shock and dismay.
He nodded.
"Oh, then you know.." he said.
Her gaze was callous and hard. "....Know that we were getting some sort of an observer, yes," she began icily, "But the Captain..... neglected to tell me who it was."
Paris stifled a chuckle and grinned haughtily.
"I guess it must have just slipped her mind," he said, "I'm sure she ....meant to tell you."
The look in the young Betazoid's eyes now actually scared Kim and he thought at any moment she was about to wring Tom's neck with her bare hands. This was not the warm friendly doctor he had met just hours before.
"As a matter of fact," Paris added jauntily, "I seem to be observing some kind of problem right now.....Doctor."
Composed as most Betazoids were, Kathleen had unfortunately inherited her father's temper and could display a mean side when she wanted. Her blood pressure was beginning to rise and though she could keep from projecting her own emotions on people, she let him know that every fibre of her being despised him and wanted to slap him silly. Paris felt he needed to get out of there now, before Kim lost all respect for her and before his pounding heart vaulted from his chest. The mere sight of her brought forth a lot of long lost feelings. Feelings that had never been resolved just buried down deep. He turned for the door before she had time to speak, hoping Harry would follow.
"Well, gotta go." He called back nervously over his shoulder, "The captain will want to know I'm here. See ya `round, Doc."
As hoped, Harry followed his colleague in disbelief of the lack of respect he had just displayed. This wasn't the warm, friendly doctor he had met this morning and his new colleague obviously had something to do with it.
"I take it you two know each other," he asked after the sickbay doors closed behind them. Paris grinned.
"We share a past," he replied casually as if it was nothing to him, but his eyes were far off in warm distant
memories.
