Selena Byn'Hahli - Joining the Patrol (Part 1)
It was a cold and rainy day in Bascone, somewhere in the third week of Tertius (March). The deep snows of winter had already been steadily melting over the last few weeks. Though most of the streets of Bascone were paved, those that weren't had been the recipient of loads of gravel and board sidewalks over the last few days in a futile attempt to cover some of the muddy depressing mess outside.
Inside, by a small fire in her fireplace, Selena Byn'Hahli sat in her sewing parlor stitching the last of a set of sleeves into a linen blouse for one of her customers. Business was beginning to pick up again after the dregs of winter and she was busily working to keep ahead of it. Phelina, her assistant, was only too happy to help out. She had become a fine worker and learned the trade well.
"The fabric for Madam Carpe's dress has finally arrived M'Lady..." she said as she entered the room with a bolt of fabric under her arm. Selena looked up and laid her sewing on the cutting table next to her. She got up and eyed the bolt, carefully feeling the material in her hands.
"Hmm, very nice. I think she'll be pleased. You can start cutting it out of you want. I'm sure Madam Carpe wouldn't mind it a little early." Selena grinned. Phelina nodded.
"Of course," she said and took the bolt to the cutting table.
Martin du Vraise made his way carefully down Craftsman Street, trying not to get any wetter or muddier than he already was. He was a tall, dark-haired man and wore a drooping wide-brimmed hat and a Lanterne tabard. He kept his head down slightly to keep the raindrops from obscuring his view as he carefully walked along, watching for the shop to which he was heading.
His eyes finally came to rest on the door as he stepped up to knock on it lightly. He waited patiently, standing under the eaves of the shop and trying to drip off whatever water he had gathered thus far. The door swung open and the lady beckoned him eagerly inside.
"Come in, come in," she said standing back out of his way, "You must be soaked."
Martin smiled hesitantly, "Yes, but I don't want to get water all over your floors."
She smiled and waved her hand motioning him in, "Water will dry up, M'Lord. My floors are the least of my worries."
He nodded and stepped inside, "Please, I'm hardly anyone's Lord. You are the mistress of the establishment?"
"Yes, I'm Selena," she said with a nod, "and this is Pheline, my assistant."
Martin nodded at the two women as he pulled a small bundle from beneath his tabard.
"I am honored to meet you, ladies. I am Corporal du Vraise of the..." he paused, grinning shyly, "Well, I'm sure you can tell who I am..."
"Well the uniform does give you away, "Selena nodded, "Since I made it..."
He nodded, "Yes, that's what I had heard. I hope you'll forgive me, but would your assistant be willing to take on a bit of mending? I tore my trousers yesterday out in the forest..."
Selena held out her hand for the pants, "Well, I'm sure one of us would be up to the job.."
He handed her the bundle, reluctantly.
"I wouldn't want to put you out, Madame Selena, I'm sure you have more than enough real work to keep you busy..." He grimaced, "I mean, a seamstress of your talent must have plenty of commissions that require her attention."
She shrugged, "It's all work Corporal..."
Selena examined the pants checking if the tear was in the seam itself or in the fabric. From a quick look she could see the tear was in the fabric and it was a rather nasty one at that. She wondered what he had been doing to cause such damage. She frowned slightly.
"This is going to take some invisible mending. You may have to leave them for a couple of hours." she said.
"That would be fine, they're not my only pair thankfully." he said with a nod, "Oh, and if you have the time I would like to commission a cloak..."
"That shouldn't be a problem. I assume it's part of your uniform? I still have some material left over from your tabard..."
"Well not exactly, but it would be nice if it suited. I was just given permission to commission a Patrol unit and that much riding is going to get cold." He looked around the shop for a moment, a little embarrassed, "Also, I needs it to be sturdy enough to fight with."
Selena looked mildly interested, "A Patrol unit? Hmm, well I should have something a little warmer and more versatile then.."
She motioned to Pheline to bring a bolt of wool from the back room. As he waited to view the fabric, he tugged his hat from his head suddenly aware that he still had it on.
"With the way the town's growing, the existing units have been run a little ragged trying to both protect the work parties and patrol the forest." he explained taking in the rest of the shop. His eyes finally come to rest on a lovely pair of scimitars hanging on the wall. He smiled slightly, "Are those yours, Madame?"
Selena looked up to see what he was talking about and smiled modestly as she turned back to him, "Yes, those are my scimitars. Strange for a seamstress to own such weapons isn't it?"
He smiled a little and craned his neck to get a better look at them, not wanting to step out of the puddle he's standing in, "Are they Vodacce?"
She shook her head, "No, Crescent. I studied Yael since I was old enough to hold a sword... my parents gave them to me as a gift when I completed my training."
She suddenly looked a little
sheepish as he looked a little closer at her.
"Indeed," he said, "You're a long way from home, Madame Selena..."
Selena grew a little uncomfortable and squared her shoulders, turning her attention back to the bolt of material, "Yes, well... about that cloak. Will this suffice? It's a lightweight wool. Warm and not easily torn.... I've made several cloaks and traveling waistcoats from this..."
He touched the material and nodded, "Yes, I think this would do nicely. I need something that will be comfortable to wear, but won't cut easily..."
She nodded, "Well unless you're wearing chainmail then all fabric will get cut eventually.... but this one is quite sturdy... I'll start it tonight."
"Also, if you could sew some small weights into the hem, so it'll swing properly?" he said with a tiny smirk, "It sounds like vanity, but you'd be surprised how useful a properly-weighted cloak can be."
She nodded, "Of course. Now, if you wouldn't mind, I need to take a few measurements."
He removed his tabard and stood still for her as she started to measure him.
"I uhh, hope I'm not offending you by saying so but..." he looked at her hesitantly then continued, "I've seen this absolutely beautiful mare down at the stables. The stablemaster told me it belonged to you. Obviously you can ride and if you can fight as well, would you consider joining the Patrol?"
Selena paused before stepping forward to quickly slip her arms under his to bring the measuring tape around his chest, "Joining the Patrol? Me?"
He held his arms up carefully, "Well, it's your choice of course, but we need people who can ride, fight, and think well on their feet. Whatever skills a person has, sooner or later they'll come in handy out there..."
She went back to her measuring as he spoke, not entirely sure she wanted to say no right away.
"I would talk about the pay, but from the looks of your shop you'd probably make more if you didn't join.." he let out a small chuckle.
"Well, as much as I like doing this..." she motioned to her shop, "it does sound tempting... perhaps give me tonight to sleep on it? When you come back tomorrow for your things, I'll let you know then."
"Of course, Madame," he said with a nod, I imagine we can discuss payment for all of this then too?"
She nodded, "How long did you need this?" then quickly added, "The cloak I mean..."
He blinked, "Oh... about knee-length please..."
She dragged the tape down from the back of his neck across the small of his back and down to the back of his knee, making a mental note of the measurement. He tried hard not to flinch. The last person who took his measurements wasn't as nearly as attractive as this young lady. She then stood and brushed a lock of curly hair out of her eyes.
"I should have this all done by lunchtime tomorrow if you want to come back then." she said.
He looked to her in amazement, "That soon?"
She nodded, "I usually work in the evenings too, to pass the time..."
He smiled a little, "Must be more entertaining than my evenings, I usually end up polishing my gear or reading the same book for the fourteenth time..." he quickly caught himself, "My apologies, Madame... Were you done?"
"Yes," she nodded, "I'm all done."
He quickly bowed to her and put his tabard and hat back on, turning to exit the shop, "Then I'll get out of your way and return tomorrow. Thank you again, Madame Selena."

Selena Byn'Hahli - Joining the Patrol (Part 2)
Early morning dawned on the small town as the first lights of the sun found Selena in the barn with Jo'Har, her mare. After cleaning out her stall and feeding her horse, Selena walked from the stall to an empty part of the barn where she drew her scimitars from her belt to begin her early morning routine. Feeling the music begin in her heart, she began to dance and twirl the swords about in an elegant fashion. Jo'Har watched her master curiously and nickered softly.
After feeling restless in the early morning hours, Martin decided to go for a ride. With his saddle slung over one shoulder, he stepped quietly into the barn and came to a halt when he sees the twirling figure in the center.
"Err..." he began, but Selena didn't falter. She was deep in concentration and didn't see Martin right away. She stepped and turned gracefully, wielding her swords about her head, making it look like she could easily slice herself to pieces. Martin was awestruck as his breath caught in his throat. He stared at her form and her controlled rhythms, finding himself trying to blame his amazement on the fact that he'd never seen such graceful sword moves before. With a mental kick, he finally brought himself to clear his throat. It would be quite uncomfortable to be caught staring.
Selena paused in mid-swing, looking as if she was about to take out a nearby bale of hay as she turned and looked at him. Her expression fell.
"Oh!" she said quickly lowering her sword, "I didn't see you there...."
He nodded and swallowed, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you. I uhh, just wanted to take Roderigo for a ride."
She quickly slipped her swords into her sword belt and fixed her hair a little. She was breathing a little heavy from her workout.
"It's okay," She said, "I was just about done anyway."
She smirked at him as she headed to Jo'Har's stall, "I have some sewing to finish before noon... I can't spend all my time playing..."
Martin walked to where a black-faced gelding awaited, "Of course."
As he made his way into the stall of the massive horse, he idly wondered what a real workout would have looked like if what she was doing was playing. His thoughts were interrupted by her horse's gentle nickering.
"You know, there's no rush on my cloak if you're really busy, " he offered. She smiled.
"Actually, I have most of it done. About all I have left to do is the hem. The weights take a little more time."
He nodded, "So have you thought anymore about the other offer?"
Selena nodded, "Yes actually...." Then muttered something in Crescent to her horse. The mare moved to the other side of the stall where the brushes were and waited for Selena to groom her. Selena neglected to tell him she had been thinking about the offer all night and that it sounded very interesting to her especially since she loved being in the outdoors and loved action.
"Philene and I talked about it last night and her sister has just come to town. She sews a little bit and is willing to be trained, so that should help out quite a bit in the shop. So what exactly will I be doing?"
"Well, most of the time Patrols just roam... or patrol the countryside around Bascone. We also escort work parties, but they usually don't go more than ten miles from town. Sometimes we do get asked to do other things that will take us away for a day or two, but that's the exception rather than the rule."
Selena nodded as she thought about it some more.
"Well it would be a change from what I'm doing...and it certainly sounds exciting," she said, "Yes. Yes, I do believe I would like to join..."
He grinned at her over Roderigo's back, "Hopefully, not too exciting."
He put the comb down and fished in his pocket for something. He stepped out of his stall and walked over to Selena and held out his hand. In it was a silver badge, embossed with the Patrol's insignia and the number 10.
"Thank you..." he said as she took the badge and looked at it carefully.
"So when do I start?" she asked, meeting his eyes.
He took on a certain air of professionalism for a moment as he clasped his hands behind his back, "I have to finish recruiting the rest of the unit, it could be a couple days. I will let you know, though..."
She nodded, "You'll know where to find me..."
She tucked the badge into her swordbelt and continued to groom her horse, who in turn nudged her chest affectionately. Getting out for a nice long ride everyday would be nice now that the weather was clearing. Selena could tell that Jo'Har too was looking forward to joining the patrol.
Martin, nodded and stepped out of her stall, "We don't have uniforms yet, so you'll want to make sure you have sturdy travelling clothes. Just make sure the badge is pinned where it can be easily seen."
"That shouldn't be a problem." she replied.
"Wonderful," he said with a small smile as he went back to saddling his horse, "I'll be by after lunch for my cloak.
He focused on what he was doing for a moment before looking up at her again over his gelding's back.
"It will be a pleasure, working for you, Madame..." he said, then paused realizing what he had said, "Err with you, I mean. I must be still a little asleep..."
She chuckled, "Perhaps Roderigo will wake you up..."
Selena met the large horse's eyes and smiled at him. She gave the horse a small wink. The gentle gelding tossed his head a little and seemed to wink back. She grinned to herself as Jo'Har nudged her chest again. Martin seemed oblivious to the whole thing as he then led his horse out of his stall and paused as he passed hers.
"Well, I hope you have a pleasant morning, Madame. Until later..." he then gave her a crisp salute and left.
Selena imitated the salute as best she could and returned to brushing her horse.

Selena Byn'Hahli - Seeing Wolves
The morning was quiet in the forest. The birds were singing and there was a certain air of silence that hung in the air as she creeped stealthily along, the scent of her prey wafting into her nostrils. She dodged this way and that, through thickets and under shrubs, taking care not to be seen as her eyes darted periodically from side to side to watch her reinforcements as they closed in on the meal they had targeted before them. It was a doe. Most likely not more than a year old and her mouth watered at the thought of its succulent meat and the taste of it's sickly sweet blood.
As a flock of birds quickly rose from the treetops above, the deer raised her head. Suddenly aware that she was not alone, but rather, in the presence of half a dozen very hungry wolves. With a flick of her tail and a dart to the right, she dashed off into the forest, the pack suddenly hot on her heels. They easily surrounded her, enclosing her and cutting off all escapable access as she continued to dart this way and that, only to be cut off by yet another wolf belonging to the pack.
With a multitude of snarls and growls, the dominant male pounced onto the deer's back and sank his teeth into her flank. Her hindquarters gave out from under her and she was easily brought to the ground. The pack then wasted no time in moving in to devour thier prey. Snapping and biting every mouthful down in hearty gulps before other predators intruded on their feast. It was a meal worth fighting for and felt strangely satisfying to her as she too ate heartily.
Yet something made her stop. Something that made her freeze right where she stood. The dominant male, as he looked up at her while he swallowed a piece of flesh, looked very familiar. He gazed into her eyes and the next thing she knew she was staring right at her father. He smiled and continued to eat at the deer, suddenly a wolf again.
Selena grew very confused and was deeply disturbed by all this. She gazed down at her paws that were now blood soaked hands. The front of her tunic was stained with the blood of the deer as the pack continued to eat, unbothered by the fact that Selena was human. Stumbling backward in fear and confusion, she got to her feet. The wolves then looked up at her and with a toss of their heads they began to howl. Selena suddenly found herself howling right along with them. Howling so long and so loudly into the morning air that she woke with a start. She had been sure she heard a wolf's cry in her room. But as she recalled the details of her dream, she realized that is was her doing the howling.
It was those details that came haunting her as she stared out at the wolf outside. She remembered everything about her dream last night as if she lived it and seeing the blood stains on Miette's leg only reminded her even more of the very stains of blood on the front of her tunic.
She sighed wondering what it all meant. Was it a premonition of today's events? Did it mean that along with her abilities with the windrunners that she would have the power to predict the future? It was all very confusing and Selena wished she could send word to her mother to help matters.
She went back to Jo'Har once again, moreso for comfort in her uneasiness. And, for just once, she wished it was someone who would hold her in return...

Selena Byn`Hahli - Night "Watch"
The night was warm, which wasn't surprising since it was late spring. Martin headed back to Phenix after a long and boring night reading and Lanterne Headquarters. He dismounted Roderigo to open the stable door. The door somehow seemed heavier than normal tonight, most likely due to the fact that he was overtired, his head hurt, and he had missed dinner. That, added to his previous state of mind after speaking with the pair of Patrol leaders, meant he wasn't in a very good mood at the moment - which seemed to be the norm for him lately. He led his horse inside and closed the door behind him.
Selena was slumbering peacefully not too far away from him. Belly down, with her head using Jo'har's rump for a pillow, she dangled her legs on either side of her horse while covered in a light blanket as the night was so warm. They were both deep in sleep until the slam of the barn door woke them with a start. Selena snapped awake and raised her head as Jo'Har tossed her head in disgust, grunting loudly at her oppressor.
Martin hardly noticed Selena in his tired stupor but grumbled something unintelligible in Jo'Har's direction as he led Roderigo to his stall. Selena blinked against the semi-darkness as Jo'Har nickered softly to her.
She nodded and gently patted Jo'Har's rump whispering, "Yes, he does seem quite grumpy doesn't he?"
Jo'Har nodded her head in agreement and together they watched as he put away his tack and grabbed a brush to groom his horse with. He seemed down in the dumps in addition to his dark mood, and talked softly to his horse speaking as if it was the only creature in LaMotte who wasn't angry with him. Selena felt a little empathy toward him, especially after the obscene trial that took place only a short time ago. She pushed herself up from her belly position and swung her legs around
facing the right way, casually leaning slighly on her horse's neck.
"Up a little late aren't you?" She said to him, "Especially since we have early patrol in the morning..."
Martin jumped in surprise and turned around, spying Selena, "Oh..." He still looked a little annoyed. "Yes, but tell that to the board. When they said "all my off duty time", they meant it."
Selena nodded, "I guess your job IS as hard as it looks…"
He snorted, "It's only hard in that it's boring beyond belief. Most of the books I'm supposed to be reading were written by Generals who never actually met their troops..."
She laughed softly and then realizing how serious he was she stifled the grin and tried to put on a straight face again.
"For what it's worth... I think you're doing a great job,” she said hoping it would cheer him up even a little.
"Thanks," he said with a sigh, continuing to brush Roderigo, "At least someone believes it..."
There was an air of disbelief in his tone that made Selena a little awkward. That and there had been something she wanted to say for days now, since she had been taken captive and they chased down and apprehended Maurice.
"You know, I never got to thank you for helping to save my life in the convent.... If it weren't for your quick thinking.... " She paused as he turned to look at her. She smiled and met his eyes from across the stable, "Well... anyway... I wouldn't be here... thanks...."
To her disappointment, he sighed deeply again and looked away, "Yes, well... you're welcome, and... I'm sorry I sent you on that goose-chase earlier..."
She shrugged slightly, "How could you have known he wasn't there? That was why you sent us, is it not?"
He still didn't look her way as he shook his head, "No, not that one... That errand to Madame Marie's..."
She felt a small smile come to her lips, and a wave of relief swept over her, "You mean you didn't have a reservation?"
He almost smiled, "If you'd stopped in there like I'd asked, you would have found out. No, I don't go there...."
Her smile widened a little, "How'd you know I didn't go?"
"The look on your face when you came back." he said his back still facing away from her, "I could tell you were still thinking I'd sent you to give my condolences to the Madame's girls..."
"I'm kind of relieved you don't go there actually," she said without a thought.
"I never feel like I have the time," he said. "Not to mention... I'd be too embarrassed anyway. I have a hard enough time talking to Gabriella..."
She smiled, "She does tend to bring that out in men..."
"She's nice enough, but how do you make conversation with someone who does that for their pocket money? "How was work today" just seems wrong somehow..." he said.
Selena stifled a laugh, "She's too busy trying to catch Halden's eye to make for such conversation anyway..."
Martin nodded. "He does seem to like her...." then added thoughtfully, "I wonder if he knows what her night job is...?"
He then looked to Selena questioningly, "So why are you out here? It's a bit late for stablework, and you're a bit ...underdressed for it..."
She smiled sleepily as she glanced down at her nightshirt, tugging slightly at the blanket that had somehow just fallen from around her waist. Her legs were now uncomfortably exposed and she moved to cover them, but not before Martin had subtly appreciated the shapeliness of her legs in the hint of moonlight from outside.
"I like to sleep out here sometimes with Jo'Har" she said affectionately patting her horse's neck, "believe it or not, I'm more comfortable on the back of a horse."
He actually broke into a smile and met her eyes, "That's a testament to either your upbringing, or the lumpiness of your bed..."
She laughed, "I think it might be a little of both really..."
He laughed softly too and leaned against his horse thoughtfully, "Maybe I should bring my blankets out here too... A pile of hay can't be less comfortable than my floor mattress..."
She shook her head, "A pile of hay is quite comfortable actually.... it's the mice you have to worry about though...." she scowled slightly, "chewing on your blankets...."
He smiled, "Not a fan of mice, I take it..."
"Mice I don't mind, I just don't like what they choose to chew on or leave behind.."
"So that's why you sleep on horseback? So the mice can't bother you?"
She shrugged, "A little, though not many mice bother this stall...."
Jo'Har nickered softly in reply. Martin returned to his brushing.
"Being stepped on by a mare is not a fate most mice would desire..."
Selena felt the dregs of slumber tug at her mind and nodded sleepily.
"Not this mare anyway," she said stifling a yawn. She turned away from him again to tug the blanket up around her and return to her belly position, resting her head on her folded arms.
"Anyway, if you don't mind, I'm going back to sleep." she said, then added teasingly "We do have early patrol in the morning..."
He nodded and chuckled softly. A moment passed as he watched her thoughtfully, sleeping there on her horse. He couldn’t exactly put his finger on it, but there was something that drew him to the exotic woman, something in her manner that never failed to draw his eye. If only his life were a little less complicated... Selena went wherever the wind took her and was just as happy for it. Somehow he felt a little envious and wished he could be a little more spontaneous. He quietly put his
brush away.
"You know, you should really try sleeping out here... it helps clear your mind..." Selena said from her stall.
It was as if she was reading his mind. He looked at her again for a moment. "Yes, I think I'll try..." he said with a chuckle, "I'll have to risk the mice, though, there's no way I'll be able to stay on Roderigo's back... be back in a moment."
He looked over at her position on Jo'Har before leaving the barn and somehow imagined himself slipping off into a pile of manure the first moment his horse moved. He returned a few moments later dressed in
looser clothing and carrying a couple of blankets over one shoulder. One of them being the one she gave him the first night they settled into Headquarters.
Selena regarded him in his sleeping attire and stared at him for a moment. He looked as if he wasn't sure where to go.
"You could stay here with us," She suggested. She paused suddenly realizing how inappropriate the invitation was, "Umm... I mean.. she's good with the mice... Jo'Har is...keeping them away... I mean..."
He went to her stall and looked inside. "Is there room for the three of us?"
Selena looked down and frowned, "Um, on second thought, probably not."
He smiled at her and looked upward at the ceiling, "It's okay, there are probably fewer of them up in the loft..."
She smiled, looking a little relieved, "Probably..."
They held each other's gaze for another moment before Martin finally tore himself away.
"Anyway..." he said slowly, heading for the loft, "Pleasant dreams Mistress Selena.."
"Pleasant dreams..." she said in return as a sleepy, yet unknowingly seductive, smile crept across her face.
Unfortunately for him, he missed the full effect of that smile through the darkness as he went up to the loft, kicked off his boots and bedded himself down for the night. Selena could hear him rustling about above her as she and her horse settled down once again to sleep the rest of the night.
As the depths of slumber began to fill her mind, she whispered softly in Crescent, "Good Night, Martin..."

Selena Byn'Hahli - Up in the Loft (pt. 1)
It had been about a half hour since dusk had fallen and the Tenth had just finished their patrol. Many of the group were relaxing and catching up on personal chores like eating and sleeping, while some others took advantage of free time to run a few errands. Selena was one of them. Once they had returned from patrol, Selena quietly excused herself to head into Bascone before night had fallen. Her errand only took her a half hour with the speed that Jo'Har ran so she knew she wouldn't have to brave the journey home in near dark.
Martin had been in a quiet (but not surprisingly grumpy) mood this afternoon. Thankfully, he didn't say much over the last few hours, this allowed him to clear his thoughts and pervade the overall feeling of gloom and grouchiness altogether. He continued to clear his thoughts while in the stables grooming his horse Roderigo, when he heard someone fast approaching on horseback. It caused him to pause his task, his senses going to instant alert.
Selena drew Jo'Har to a halt just inside the courtyard and hopped easily off her back. She headed into the stables with Jo'har instinctively following her covered in sweat and longing for a nice drink of her water from her water tray.
"Oh, it's you," came a voice. Selena turned toward the voice and saw Martin as he finished brushing Roderigo, "I was worried there was an emergency..."
Selena smiled a little.
"Sorry to startle you." She said as she lead Jo'Har past him and into her stall. She emerged to head to the tack room to get Jo'Har's blanket and a large towel to dry her off with.
Martin shrugged, "That's alright." he replied, "So what have you two been up to? A late pleasure ride?"
Selena draped the towel and blanket over her shoulder and headed to Jo'Har's stall.
"Sort of, " she replied as she began to wipe down her horse, "more like running a little personal errand actually..."
Martin blinked, "This late in the evening?"
Selena smirked at him over Jo'har's sleek back as she removed her saddle and bridle, hanging it on the half-wall of the stall. She pulled a large bottle from the saddlebag and held it up for him to see, "I was feeling in the mood for some relaxation tonight and thought a nice bottle of wine would help."
Selena laid the bottle at the entrance to the stall and looked up at him. He looked at the bottle before looking back up at her.
"You.... umm....wouldn't want to join me would you?" She asked carefully.
"Me? I thought I was everyone's pariah today.." he said giving her a puzzled look. She turned and continued her task of wiping down her horse.
"True, but I also thought you need this more than the rest of us. I wasn't happy with myself for my behavior this morning, but the way Mariel treated you wasn't fair either. So, I went and bought something we both could enjoy." She paused and eyed him across the barn, "Compliments of my little bonus, by the way...."
She could see a glimmer of light in his eyes even at this distance as a tiny smirk came to his usual serious visage.
"Alright," he said finally, "I'll join you... Maybe we can drink to a hedgehog in Sergeant Etalon's bed..."
Selena laughed and finshed bedding down Jo'Har for the night while Martin retrieved a couple of conical leather drinking cups from his saddle bag. Together they climbed the ladder into the hayloft so they could get a look at the stars which were in the process of coming out slowly, one by one.
Selena plopped herself down on a blanket-covered bale of hay. Apparently Martin had liked sleeping in the loft so much, he left his blankets there. She pulled the cork from the wine bottle and sat down to pour them their drinks.
"Had a good sleep the other night?" she asked.
"Yes, actually it was quite comfortable." Martin nodded, "The mice seem to have left me alone as well. I trust you slept well..?"
Selena nodded and handed him his drink, "I always do..."
He sipped his wine while she poured herself a glass full, adding thoughtfully, "Yes you did look rather comfortable.."
Selena smiled and propped the bottle between a couple of bales of hay so it wouldn't tip over.
"So shall we drink to a hedgehog in Sgt. Etalon's bed then?" she asked with a twinkle in her eye. Martin nodded and actually cracked a bit of a smile.
"To a hedgehog..."
They both tiped their cups upside down, draining them quickly. Selena didn't waste any time refilling them.
"Do you mind if I ask you a personal questions, Mistress Selena?" Martin said after a few moments.
She sipped her wine and leaned back against a bale of hay, "Not at all, not as long as you're not offended if I choose not to answer."
"Fair enough." Martin nodded as he sipped again, "Do you normally go picking fights with burly Eisen officers?"
Selena had half expected this kind of question and took a big swig of her drink before shaking her head in reply, "I don't go walking up to them in hopes to start a fight if that's what you mean... that would be kind of foolish. If it's something I believe to be right, then that's another story...though I can't say what I did today was very clever either... I guess my temper got the best of me.."
"It happens, I'm afraid." he said, "Etalon has a way of making it easy, though..."
"She just couldn't let you deal with it could she?" Selena asked. Martin shook his head and drained the rest of his wine, holding out his cup for more.
"Of course not. That might imply that she's not the All-Powerful Goddess of Cavalry or something..." he said.
Selena poured him another glass with a scowl at his reply. She could feel her cheeks getting hotter now as the wine crept into her system. Though seeing as she didn't have much supper, it wasn't hard. She gazed at Martin, who seemed to be succumbing easily to the wine as well. Selena smiled inwardly, praising herself for getting such a strong good bottle of the intoxicant.
"...and now even our people are starting to look at me like I've got two heads... I don't know why I bother..." he somewhat muttered to himself.
Selena frowned, "That's because you doubt yourself. If you had a little faith in yourself and your abilites and what you can pull us through... then there's no reason for us to..." she
shrugged, "Well... doubt you..."
He scoffed, "Sure, it's that easy. Act like you know what you're doing and you magically will..."
She nodded, "Sort of, it's all about confidence I guess.."
He downed another cupful and looked at her, "So is that what you do? You always seem on top of things. You're always graceful, even when you're tied to an altar with a madman with a branding iron standing over you..."
She refilled both their cups, glancing up at him for a moment before giving a little shrug, "It's the way I was brought up, I guess. I was taught to be proud of everything I do even if it is a mistake. No one can expect to know all the answers. How would life be interesting if we knew what to do all the time?"
He leaned back into the bale of hay next to her, "Yeah, well, as the leader I'm supposed to know. There's some scary things out there, we've probably only seen the nicest of the lot..."
She smiled, "Is that what all your reading is supposed to tell you?"
"What it's probably supposed to tell me that I shouldn't let crazy people be in my group." he said, "I haven't learned anything from those books that I could really use... When are we going to have an entire regiment in La Motte, let alone under my command?
"Probably never at the rate all this madness is going." she said with a nod, "I'd forget the reading if I were you... learn to live by your gut.."
And with that she leaned into him and gave him a little jab in the side with her finger. Martin looked down at her, a little surprised at her sudden level of comfortness in the moment. Of course, it could also have been the numerous glasses of wine she had just downed in little less than 15 minutes. He watched her pour herself another glass and yet again the feeling of respect and admiration came sweeping over him again as he watched her. He didn't know what it was about this woman that attracted him so, only that whatever it was, it was giving him sudden urges he knew better than to act upon, wine or no wine.
"So I should do whatever my gut says?" he asked as he carefully took the bottle from her and poured himself another drink. Downing it quickly.
She nodded, "Yeah, your gut instinct is most often the correct one..."
Had he acted on his gut instinct at that moment, it probably would have cost him any amount of respect she might have had for him. He knew the wine was really talking to him now, however that was no excuse to throw away a perfectly good friendship. He stared down at her for a long moment, then shook his head.
"No, I shouldn't," he muttered, then tried to decide if he wanted more wine instead.
Selena, however didn't clue in and looked up at him oddly, "Shouldn't what? Have more wine?" she grabbed the bottle from him and poured him another drink, "Drink up, I bought it for you..."

Selena Byn'Hahli - Up in the Loft (pt. 2)
They took the next hour to finish the bottle of wine and talk about the little things. Martin mostly spoke about his family. Somehow, being intoxicated brought out another side to him that Selena hadn't seen. He talked of his twin sister Martine, who had been stationed in Castille after they became Musketeers together. It seemed a little sad that he hadn't seen her in three years, but she had the feeling that deep down he knew (or hoped mostly) that he'd see her again someday.
"...and so she got sent to Castille for the war," he explained, "Don't know what happened to her after that..."
Selena, who had been leaning back on her elbow with her drink in that hand, patted his arm with her free hand. She gave it an affectionate squeeze offering her reassurance. He
instinctively put his hand over hers, giving it a squeeze, smiling in thanks.
"Should be out looking for her," he said gazing at the stars now, "Castille can't be any more dangerous than here... Only family I got left..."
Selena raised herself to a sitting position, taking care as not to shift her hand from under his as she liked it where it was, "But could you honestly leave, now? We all need you here..."
He nodded, "I chose to come here, duty instead of family. Can't leave now, my problems don't matter..."
Following her instincts, she snuggled up to him and laid her head on his shoulder, stroking his arm, "Well, if it means anything to you... I'm here for you...
This was followed by a subtle hiccough.
He looked down at her, oddly, though not pulling away, "You are?"
She tilted her head upward to look up at him, "Yeah... everyone needs someone to talk to... I'll be there if you need to vent..."
She remembered their conversation in her room the night they settled into headquarters. He had told her he'd like it if they were to become friends and this was her way of offering to continue that bond.
He relaxed slightly, "Oh, I thought you meant something else... thanks..."
She straighted up and looked at him quizzically, "What did you think I meant?"
He shook his head, "Nothing... Too unlikely anyway..."
She laughed, probably a little harder than normal considering she was now very drunk, "Aww come on, tell me..."
He couldn't help but laugh at her.
"Thought you were wanting to do... you know..." He shook his head trying to clear his thoughts, but it didn't work, "They call it snogging in Carleon..."
Selena blinked her eyes innocently, "Snogging? What's that?"
As if it was possible after consuming all that wine, Martin blushed deep red, "Well...."
Selena suddenly caught on. She wasn't too drunk to know THAT look. She herself flushed as well as she giggled, her eyes twinkling devilishly, "Oh.... THAT..."
Martin nodded.
"Well, I think I'm a little too drunk to know what to do exactly..." she said with another giggle.
He shook his head, "That's okay, you don't wanna anyway..."
She frowned suddenly looking offended, "Says who?"
He pointed with his free hand, still holding onto hers with the other, "Says your horsie. Told me so herself."
"Jo'har? I doubt it. You don't speak Crescent."
"You're right... I don't..."
"Don't what?"
Martin shrugged, "Don't think you want to snog me..."
Selena laughed heartily, "I told you... I'm too drunk..."
"Right. You're drunk, and you don't wanna. It's all clerfectly peer....."
She poked him, "Hey I didn't say I didn't wanna... you said that..."
"Cause it's true..."
Selena grew a little annoyed, "How do you know what?"
He gave her hand a little squeeze, " 'cause you're too smart and pretty. Only women who like men like me are lonely old ambassador's wives..."
She sat up and squared her shoulders, the space around her and the view of him in front of her wavering slightly under her influence. Her eyes narrowed. He was getting a little annoying now. How did he know what she was thinking? Well, she'd prove HIM wrong now wouldn't she?
"Oh yeah?" she said in a soft mutter and leaned forward, pressing her lips to his. They held for a moment, the warmth from both the wine and their bodies could be felt tenfold. Martin tilted his head to one side and began to lean into the kiss he so desperately wanted right now. However, a wave of vertigo overtook him and he leaned the wrong way, his lips skating across her cheek as he tumbled to the hay covered floor and off the bales of hay they were sitting on. As he fell, he instinctively grabbed Selena, who still had a full glass of wine in her hand. She let off a squeal as she lost her balance and tumbled backward off the bale next to him, spilling her wine all over herself and Martin. They both lay there, Selena giggling hysterically and Martin chuckling softly as his glassy eyes stared up at the ceiling and out into the night sky.
"Told ya," he said breathlessly...
She turned her head to look at him, "Told me what?"
He turned to look at her a genuine warm smile coming to his lips, "That you're pretty..."
She smiled at him in return and moved closer to him. Their lips came very close again before Martin's mouth widened into a huge yawn.
"But I think I've had enough pretty for one night..." he said.
She nodded and snuggled sleepily into him, "Yeah, " she agreed, "and we're too drunk..."
Another yawn from Martin, "And I think your horsie is laughing at us...."
He put his arm around her and drew her close to him as he felt the wine overtake him once and for all. He knew better than to think that he would even remember this in the morning and thought it just as well. They had probably said and done things they probably would never have done sober and under the proper conditions. Whether she really meant all the things she said, he might never know.
Either that, or he'd have to wait a little longer....
Some ten minutes later, a group of shadowy figures, some of whom could not stop snickering, quietly took Martin down from the loft and carried him off into the night....

Selena Byn'Hahli - Ride with the wind
As Halden left the barn, Selena continued to brush Jo'Har with ferverish strokes. Tolerant as the mare was, she found this way a little harsh and tossed her head irritatedly. Selena could hear her complaining and paused for a moment, then sighed heavily. She laid the brush on the wall of the stall and leaned against her mare collecting her thoughts.
"Let's go for a ride," she said to Jo'Har to which the mare accepted gratefully. She didn't even bother to put any tack on her. She just climbed aboard her horse and let her go.
Jo'Har ran like the wind through the fields of Phenix, Selena held tight with her knees and legs and gripped the lower section of her mane as she bent low to the mare's neck. The wind blowing against her face was refreshing and Selena thought of nothing for the moment as she closed her eyes and enjoyed the ride. She needed this right now. After what happened this morning, she needed a clear head to be able to figure it all out.
After an hour of running, Selena let Jo'har graze on the lush grass while she lay on her back with her head on her horse's rump, staring up at the clouds. Selena remembered having climbed up into the loft with Martin. They sat on a couple of bales of hay to drink the wine she had bought. She remembered them talking about little things, like wishing for a hedgehog in Etalon's bed. Selena chuckled. Everything after that however, was a blur. She didn't know if it was a dream or if it was real. If some of the things she recalled were correct, then it was most likely a dream since she was sure she would never act that way around Martin. Wine or no wine...
Did she drink so much she just passed out?
That was the most likely thing. Selena didn't make it a habit of drinking, but she wasn't unfamiliar to the effects of a good wine.
As her horse continued to graze, feelings of anger, confusion, hurt and embarrassment all swirled themselves around in Selena's head. This all started yesterday when she came to the Corporal's defense. It was an action that she was sure wasn't going to go unnoticed. Selena didn't know much about working for the miliary, but it wasn't hard to see that Mariel was offended both personnally and as an officer. Surely an action like that was going to get her disciplined, if not a good slap on the wrists.
As a friendly gesture, she bought a nice bottle of wine for Martin, hopefully to get him (and herself) in better spirits. He drank with her yes, but after what she heard happened this morning, she began to feel a little hurt and unappreciated.
How drunk did he get? Obviously, not too drunk to perform for the ladies at Madam Marie's.
Her head began to swim with speculation. Somehow through the night, the Bone Dancers came for him, most likely while she was asleep. He was probably feeling rambuncious at that point after a couple of drinks and so they took him off to Madam Marie's and let him have some fun. Anger swelled in Selena.
So that's how it worked did it? She wasn't good enough for him that he had to go off with the Bone Dancers and to Madam Marie's for some action.
"Ha! Too embarrassed to go there my fanny!" She said outloud, "If he really wanted to leave bad enough he could have...!"
Jo'Har raised her head and looked back at her.
"What?" Selena snapped.
Jo'har's ears flattened against her head.
"Well it's true!" she said angrily at her, "I don't care if it was a joke or not! Why didn't he leave if he didn't want to have anything to do with that place? They even sent Halden to get him, he was enjoying himself that much."
Jo'har didn't take kindly to being yelled at and tossed her head angrily and stomped her foot.
Selena sighed angrily and sat up, "Come on, let's go back."
But Jo'Har was having none of it, she lowered her head again and began to graze.
"Come on Jo'Har," she urged again, giving her a nudge with her heels, but Jo'Har wouldn't budge.
Selena gave her a harder kick to get her to move and it worked this time, though not the way that she had hoped. Jo'Har jumped slightly and tossed her head, only to dip it again when her rear haunches sprung into the air, Selena going with them. She landed on the ground in the soft grass next to her horse with an loud grunt and Selena winced in pain. With such a rude awakening it was no wonder her senses snapped herself out of her sour mood. She brought herself to a sitting position and drew her knees up, resting her elbows on her knees letting off a deep heartfelt sigh.
"I deserved that..." she said to her horse after a moment.
Yes, you did...
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to take it out on you.. it's just that..."
You wanted to take it out on him?
"Yes..." Selena replied, "I mean no... oh, what difference does it make? He doesn't have any ties to me! What do I care...?"
Right... he's just the head of the unit... it's his problem...
"Yeah..!"
And his personal life isn't any of your business...
"Right.."
And he is quite handsome...
"Damn Right...." Selena paused for a few seconds then scowled, "Jo'Har!!"
Her horse snickered softly, then moved to rest her muzzle on Selena's shoulder. She reached up and stroked her soft nose.
"Why does it seem that everyone else knows how I feel except me...?" she asked and got to her feet. She stroked her horse's soft mane as the white mare, shoved her nose into her chest affectinately.
Want to go for another ride?
"Yeah... sure..." Selena said.
She quickly climbed onto her back and grabbing a handful of mane before Jo'Har bolted across the field....

Selena Byn'Hahli - Night"mares"
After hearing the news about Martin, Selena spent most of the day up in the hayloft catching up on some of her daily training. She did stretches and some acrobatics and mostly used her swords to practice her Yael moves. She perhaps worked harder than normal, but at this point anything to get her mind off feeling guilty and angry about it, was acceptable. She had finally managed to send off her letter to the Captain by way of Tim, Miette's adopted son. She felt she had worded it as best she could...
Captain Jean-Marie Rois et Reines,
I am writing to you in light of the news about Corporal Du Vraise's actions over the previous couple of days. After hearing why he was arrested and suspended, I feel it is my duty to inform you that I am the party to blame for his drunkenness.
On the night in question, I felt the Corporal needed something to help him relax after all the things that had been happening with our unit and so it was I who was responsible for his drinking.
Please know that it was NOT my intention for him to get as drunk as he did and I had NO idea of what was to happen to him afterward with regards to the Bone Dancers prank. It was merely my intention to help him relax as he seemed troubled. Something I would do for just about any other member of our patrol. I was always taught to help others in need.
Where I come from, we are also taught to own up to our responsibilites and admit our wrong doings. Having said that, I wish to submit myself of disciplinary action should you feel it neccessary.
Please send my apologies to the Coporal and accept my apologies as well.
Patrolman Selena Byn`Hahli
Tenth Patrol
Later that evening, after a good workout and a good meal, Selena was feeling tired and went to bed a little earlier than usual. She would spend the following day packing and getting ready for thier long journey. She slipped her nightdress over her and then climbed under her covers, feeling slumber easily take her. Too easily in fact and the effects of her troubled mind began to drift into her subconscious.
She was running through the woods again. On all fours, just she had dreamt many times before. She could hear the rustle of her padded feet against the leaves and other organic litter as they swept over the soft forest floor. The sounds of heavy panting were on all sides of her, surrounding her as she was once again running with her wolf pack.
The dominant male was not too far ahead of her and she could see his tail held high as he ran under low hanging branches and jumped over fallen tree trunks. She instinctively followed. He seemed excited about something and it reflected in the rest of the pack. The smell of blood on the air now drifted to her nostrils and she felt herself salivate at the anticipation of a fresh meal. What was it this time? A Deer? No, the scent was different. A rabbit? Or perhaps a young moose? No, it was neither. Yet it was so familiar it was disturbing. Selena wasn't sure if she wanted to find out.
The rest of the pack overcame and passed her as she slowed her pace, unsure of if she really wanted to see what the kill was this time. She could smell leather and a familiar human scent. She froze.
No... it couldn't be....
The rest of the pack surrounded the body and were tearing into it's flesh. She nosed her way anxiously into the pack but not before one of the other females made a growl at her. The hair raised on the back Selena's neck and she growled in return, taking a snap at the other female, who reluctantly submitted to her and let her in. She could pick out what was left of a blue tabard and riding boots. The silver badge hung loosely to one side next to shreads of black pants. Black pants that she had once sewn up for Martin when he first set foot into her shop.
Overcome with grief, she stepped back and began to whine... a whine that turned into a pitiful howl...
That howl awoke Selena with a start. Once again, she had been doing the howling. With her heart pounding, she wiped the sweat from her brow and listened for fear of waking up the entire house. She heard a few people stirring and some footsteps in the hallway. She cringed.
Well done Selena... give them a reason to throw you out altogether...
A few moments later, they were outside her door. Thinking quickly, she fell back to her bed and shut her eyes, pretending to be asleep.
"Are you sure?" came one voice... it was female...
"Yes, it came from in here... Selena's room..." The other voice was male
"I honestly think that if a wolf was in her room she'd have let us know somehow, that howl could have come from outside..."
"Yes, but we should check, just in case..."
"Very well... you open the door then...."
There was a sigh, then "Fine..."
The squeak of the door was quiet as whoever it was peeked inside.
"See? I told you, nothing.. now will you go back to bed? You were probably dreaming it all...."
"Fine, but maybe we should check outside... if those blood wolves came back we should alert all patrols..."
"If there were really wolves of any kind outside, don't you think the belltower watchman would have informed us by now..."
The arguing voices drifted away behind the door as it closed and Selena heard whoever it was head down the hall and back to their rooms. Once all was quiet and she was sure no one was awake this time, she left and quietly went to the barn.
If she were to dream anything like that again, she'd much rather be around Jo'Har....

Selena Byn'Hahli - Chicken man and ghosts and wolves... oh my!
Selena had plenty of time to think during guard duty. The night went pretty uneventful as she strolled along the outskirts of the camp, keeping a watchful eye. Somehow she felt a little more confident that she would be able to help defend the camp. The memories of what happened earlier and yesterday still lingered with her and her "howl" had been effective. What she couldn't figure out was that somehow, she was able to recall her dreams and summon the wolf-like ability. Her call caused the blood wolves to retreat to a point where she and the rest of her group could defeat them. She had no idea how she did it, but still, it happened.
So, what did this mean? Surely, she wasn't finally showing signs of her father's magic, was she?
When she was little, her kinship with the Windrunners was very clear and her talents came easily to her once she hit the age of 10. It was most certainly where her parents felt her powers souly rested. Now, perhaps there was more of her father in her than her family had thought. Many Duman-kir found their powers when they entered puberty and early adolescence. Selena hadn't found them at all when she hit her late teens and so her father, disappointed, thought that his tribe's magic had somehow passed over her. Being half-blood it was understandable, yet now, she wished she could write to him and tell him what was happening with her. She had been told of many of the "Grey Wolf's" magical abilities but she had never actually seen him or any of his family use it. She knew he would be thrilled to know it was coming to her, perhaps even to teach her how to harness it and tell her more, but she was so very alone with this and it scared her.
She couldn't help but wonder what this meant for her future with the patrol. If they thought she was turning into a wolf, would they dismiss her? Her lack of control on such magic would surely be a problem and how would she even learn to master it with no one around to teach her? She sighed. She wanted so much to try and do it again. To have that feeling coursing through her, to get used to how to call upon it. It was scary, yet new and exciting at the same time. However, as everyone slept she knew that summoning a wolf-call wasn’t exactly the smartest thing to do. Her earlier attempt caused Vincent to come running thinking that she was a blood wolf. She was thankful he didn't see her howl and merely thought that one nearby had called out. She neglected to tell him the truth and right now, knew she it was the best thing.
Making her way around the perimeter again, she paused to check on Jo'har who gave her a sleepy grunt before dozing off again. She patted her horse affectionately and moved onward through the camp. She was glad they were on their way home. This had been one incredible journey. She began to wonder how Martin was doing with his duties on the First Patrol. Did he think about her? Was he angry with her for getting him drunk? She hoped perhaps that he wasn't and that he would know she was only trying to help. She even hoped that he might remember what happened that night. She had a funny feeling something did, but failed to recall what. As she looked in on Miette's sleeping form as she was passing by, she thought her "Lucky" to have a man who returned her affections even if she couldn't be with him either. Selena knew Miette would hardly call herself lucky, however in Selena's eyes, she was.
.... it's just as well you and he can't be together... she hates losing...
She began thinking about the words of the strange chicken man they met before reaching Tamis. Unfortunately, his "truth" left her just as confused as before. Who was this "she" he was talking about? It sounded as if there was another woman that shared his affections. There wasn't any other woman in Martin's life, Selena was pretty sure of that. And even if there was, she'd have known it by now. It couldn't mean his sister could it? She was in Castille. Unless the man knew something they both didn't and that his sister would be returning to his life. Selena smiled weakly at that thought. That would make him happy for sure. Perhaps it meant she'd want him to go to Castille with him. Selena's heart sank. She hated to think about it, but it was certainly a possibility.
As the dawn began to break over the horizon, Selena felt sleep coming upon her and pushed her unpleasant thoughts from her mind. She got up and continued her round again, to keep awake just a little longer. As the morning came, she got word from Lieutenant Riche and found herself a spot near Jo'Har to take a small morning nap before helping to get the camp up and going. She'd have time to sleep again during their journey.
With any luck, she wouldn't dream of being a wolf...
