Miette pre-game OOM - Part 1
It's a cold and rainy day in Bascone, somewhere in the third week of Tertius (March). The deep snows of winter have been steadily melting over the last few weeks, and those streets that weren't paved have become a muddy mess. Miette Rois et Reines finds herself trying to run between the raindrops as she heads to check up on a woman who gave birth yesterday... Unfortunately, as she rounds a corner she finds herself colliding with a tall sturdy something, sending her onto the cobblestones with an oof and a splash!
<Miette> ::mumbles something decidedly unladylike and looks up to see what she ran into::
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Miette's roadblock is a tall man in a Lanterne tabard. By now she's more or less familiar with the various members of the order (since their leader is her cousin, after all), but she can't put a name to his face. He bows and offers her a hand:: My apologies, Mademoiselle, are you alrighT?
<Miette> ::gets up off the ground with the assistance of the man:: Man: I do not believe I have broken anything other than my pride.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::slight smile:: Hopefully, that is not a fatal wound... You seem to be in a hurry, is there a problem?
<Miette> Man: No. Not a problem. I am a nurse and I am en route to check on a patient. A new mother.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::bows:: If you will allow me to escort you, then?
<Miette> Man: Of course. That is, if I would not be keeping you from your other duties.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he smiles:: My duties, at the moment, are very loosely defined. Oh, I forget my manners. My name is Martin du Vraise... ::gives her a formal court bow::
<Miette> ::curtseys:: My name is Miette Rois et Reines.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he blinks for a moment in surprise:: Ahh, that's right, I do recall someone saying that the Captain had a cousin in town... You are fortunate to have family here, mademoiselle... ::offers her his arm out of formal habit::
<Miette> ::nods and takes Martin's arm:: Perhaps, though I wish I had traveled with him and his wife in order to arrive here. I came from my father's estate and did not have an easy journey. All of that is behind me now though. ::shrugs::
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he nods as he walks with her down the street:: I can only imagine, mademoiselle... I was in Avalon when the Madness came, and only arrived here a few weeks ago.
<Miette> I have been here six months, though it does not seem so long. For a few weeks I was too ill to take much notice of anything, so I have only been working as a nurse for about 5 months.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he nods:: A lot has changed in our country... How do you like being a nurse? It must be a great change from your previous life...
<Miette> ::smiles and nods:: Like night and day. I am enjoying it though. I meet many people, and the wage allows me to support myself here. My family name has little meaning these days.
<Martin_du_Vraise> On the contrary, mademoiselle, your name is one of the few that still holds meaning. Your cousin has been and still remains a great man. ::said with honest fervor::
<Miette> Oui, but nowhere near the meaning that it once did. Since it no longer entitles me to any sort of access to a ready supply of money, I must earn my keep. Certainly my life has changed, but I am much better off now than I was on my journey here. All things can be put into perspective.
<Martin_du_Vraise> Your journey?
<Miette> ::sighs and looks to the ground:: To my knowledge, I am the only survivor of my immediate family Monsieur. Our horses were run off or stolen. I traveled here alone, and on foot.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he bllinks, more than a little surprised. Judging by her size, he'd assumed that the Captain had retrieved her at some point:: How did you survive?
<Miette> ::shrugs:: I almost did not. I shot a rabbit once, and managed to clean it myself, but game was scarce due to the fires. A few times I found some eggs. I traveled at night, and lay hidden through the day. I do have experience hunting, and I am very well trained with a crossbow, but there was nothing to shoot at. I was half starved when I arrived here.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Martin thinks for a long moment:: It sounds like quite the ordeal.. Mademoiselle Rois et Reines, would you be willing to listen to a proposal? ::cringes, that sounded completely wrong::
<Miette> ::smiles:: That depends on what type of proposal you are referring to Monsieur.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::the tall man actually blushes:: I did not mean... I apologize, mademoiselle, that came out completely wrong...
<Miette> I apologize Monsieur. I knew you meant nothing personal by it. I was teasing you and I did not mean to embarrass you.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he swallows:: What I meant to say is that I have been given permission by the Captain to form another unit of the Patrol. I could use someone with your knowledge of medicine, Mademoiselle...
<Miette> ::nods:: Personally Monsieur, I would be happy to assist your new unit. I do not suppose my cousin knows you planned to ask me? I do of course make my own decisions, but it is only fair to warn you that he may be upset at first.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Martin stops for a moment:: No, he does not know. I have been wandering town, trying to think of people who would be qualified... ::slight smile:: Most men and women who have the skills necessary are already in the Patrol, you see.
<Miette> I know. And I know that my skills will be of use to you. Besides my medical knowledge I am more than simply competent with my crossbow. I was trained by the best. I would love to join your unit.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Martin nods and reaches into a pocket. He produces a silver badge, embossed with the insignia of the Patrol and the number 10:: Thank you, mademoiselle... ::he offers the badge to her:: You will need some sturdy riding clothes, and be sure you wear this somewhere it can be seen. I will come and find you when the unit is ready for its orientation meeting...
<Miette> ::takes the badge and slips it into a pouch on her belt, for now:: I am not difficult to find Monsieur. I need to see my patient now, but I look forward to seeing you again.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he nods and bows to her again:: Of course, mademoiselle... Good day to you...
<Miette> ::curtseys and turns to knock on the door of the new mother::
Some hours pass, and drizzling daytime becomes a stormy night. Miette returns to her small apartment to find her cousin Jean-Marie waiting by the door...
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Jean-Marie looks a little tired, but that's usually the case these days:: Good evening, Miette...
<Miette> ::smiles at Jean-Marie as she unlocks the door to her apartment:: Jean-Marie: Good evening Jean-Marie. I take it you heard?
<Martin_du_Vraise> <JM> ::nods:: Yes... du Vraise told me this afternoon. I had thought your journey here would be enough excitement for you, cousin...
<Miette> ::walks into her apartment and lights a lamp:: Come in and sit down if you have a few minutes to rest. You look tired. Jean-Marie, I have skills that Monsieur du Vraise can use and you know it. This is my home now. Should I not do my part?

Miette - pre-game OOM part 2
<Martin_du_Vraise> Anne is working late again... ::he steps in and finds are chair, sinking into it with a sigh:: You already put in a full day's work with the sick and injured, you want to add Patrol duties on top of that?
<Miette> ::sits in another chair and sighs as well:: I have nothing else to do with my time to be honest. Sitting at home on my off hours allows me to dwell on my parents and my missing brother. I would much rather be busy.
<Martin_du_Vraise> <JM> ::he takes off his hat and leans back, running fingers through his hair:: Miette, you are my cousin, but I must be honest. Do you even understand what the Patrol does?
<Miette> Of course I do. Who do you think tends to the wounded men from the Patrols? I appreciate your concern Jean-Marie, but rest assured I am not stumbling into this blindly.
<Martin_du_Vraise> <JM> Perhaps, but I have to know. You and Anne are the only family I have left, if anything happened to you I'd never forgive myself. I know you're a good shot and your swordsmanship's showing real promise, but...
<Miette> But...you worry. You are my only family as well. I thank Theus every day that I still have someone alive to worry for me. Still, I want to do this.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he looks her in the eyes:: Miette, can you bring yourself to kill a man? The countryside hasn't gotten any less dangerous since you stumbled in, half-dead. There are wild animals and wilder men out there. Last week a Patrol brought in the body of something I couldn't even recognize, but it had teeth that could bite through chainmail.
<Miette> ::shudders:: I do not know, but I will never know if I do not try. If the dangers of the country finally encroach even here, then where will we go? This is important to me, to all of us.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he sighs:: All right, Miette... But promise me... Promise me that you'll take no stupid risks, and that if you find you cannot handle it that you'll resign and go back to just working for the hospital...
<Miette> ::smiles:: I have never been known to be stupid Jean-Marie. I can promise you what you ask. I will be careful.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he nods and smiles a little:: Thank you, that will make me feel a little better at least. So when are you going to come have dinner with Anne and I again?
<Miette> The next time that the two of you can take time out of your busy schedules. You should be careful as well, both of you. You take too much on yourselves.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he rubs his forehead:: You're probably right... Well, I'll talk to Anne and see if we can make the time. I know she enjoys your visits, Theus knows she needs all the friendly faces she can get...
<Miette> ::nods:: Her job is difficult. It is never possible to please everyone. I am happy to visit whenever I can. Tell her that I said hello when you get home.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he nods and starts to get up:: I will do that... One last thing, cousin... Martin du Vraise is a little on the inexperienced side... He only arrived here a month ago, and before that he was an embassy guard. I'm not sure he quite understands the dangers out there either, so watch his back if you can...
<Miette> ::looks surprised:: First you do not want me to go, then you want me to watch the leader's back? At times I do not understand you Cousin. I will watch his back for you. Anything that gets too close to it will feel my bolt in their own.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::he reaches out to put a hand on her shoulder:: Call it paranoia on my part, cousin. We really cannot afford to lose anyone.
<Miette> ::nods:: I will do all in my power to save both him, and myself. ::smiles::
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::Jean-Marie nods and bends down to give her a familial kiss on the cheek:: Thank you... I'll give your regards to Anne.
<Miette> ::smiles and nods:: Please do, and get some rest.
<Martin_du_Vraise> ::smiles as he opens the door:: I'll try... ::closing the door behind him, he walks down the stairs and into the night::

Miette's log - 03/26/05 - Part 1
Miette rides back into town with the rest of the Tenth Patrol, weary and smelling of smoke after their night's work. She goes with the others to the stables and rubs down Cheval, putting her back in her stall and leaving her with a friendly pat on the neck and an armload of hay. Walking wearily up the street she heads for Anne and Jean-Marie's house, waving at early risers she passes along the way. She arrives at the house and knocks on the door, smiling as best she can when Anne opens it.
“Good morning Anne. I am sorry you had to keep the kids for so long. It took longer than we expected to liberate the prisoners and clean up the remains of the camp. Are they awake yet?”
Anne smiles at Miette and steps back to let her into the house. “They are, and it was no trouble keeping them. Are you going to bring them back to the other villagers now?”
Miette walks into the house, then turns and shakes her head at Anne. “No, actually, I was going to bring them over to my place. I miss my family, Anne. I know they certainly can not replace my brother and parents, but I am not used to living alone. If they will accept my offer, I would like to care for them.”
Anne nods. “You are a very busy woman Miette, but if you think you can handle it I am sure you will be able to care for them well. I believe they are in the kitchen finishing breakfast.”
The two women walk into the kitchen, where the children are indeed just finishing up their breakfast. Miette smiles as she sees Laurie and Tim, clean and with their clothes laundered. “Good morning Tim. Good morning Laurie. I hope you slept well. I apologize for not returning sooner, but we had a very busy night.”
At the sound of her voice, Laurie looks up and runs to her. Miette being the only person she has even remotely begun to trust, she is happy to see her again. Tim looks up as well, but remains in his chair. “You smell like smoke Madam. What kind of a busy night did you have? Did the rescue succeed?”
Miette picks up a piece of her hair and raises it to her nose, taking a sniff and grimacing. “You are correct Tim. I suppose I do not smell so nice this morning. I was around it so long that I ceased to notice. The mission was a success. The people of your town are free, and the slaver camp has been burned. Have either of you any relations among the villagers?”
As both of the children sadly shake their heads, Miette hugs Laurie to her. “It is all right. You need tell me no more. I am sure everyone here can understand what you have been through. You can talk about it when you want to, or never. In the meantime, we need to see Father Sebastian and let him know you are safe. You will need to be placed with someone.” She looks Anne in the eye as she says the last, silently asking her not to say anything right now. The children both nod and everyone walks toward the door together.
After thanking Anne again and promising to come to dinner soon, Miette walks down the street toward the church, one of the children on either side of her. She takes a deep breath and chooses her words carefully. “The man you met last night, Anne's husband, and Captain of the Patrols, is my cousin. My full name is Miette Rois et Reines. I thought you had a right to know, considering what I am about to ask you. And Tim, I am no more anyone's ladyship than the Captain is anyone's lordship. In La Motte, all are equal.” She smiles at him. “You know we are on the way to the church to speak to Father Sebastian about a placement for you. I lost my entire family in the Madness, just as you did, and I have been lonely since. I would like you to come and stay with me, if that is all right with the two of you. You have been through a lot together, and if I bring you home with me, I can be sure you stay together.” She looks from side to side, smiling at them both, and waits for their answer as they near the church.
Laurie, quiet as ever, watches the ground under her feet as they walk, and perhaps predictably, it is Tim who speaks up. “Madam, I'm sure I'd be happy in your home, though I'm not a child anymore. I still need a place to stay though, and I'd like to be able to stay near Laurie.”
Laurie looks up, watching Tim as he speaks, then nods and speaks quietly herself. “You've been kind to me Madam. I will stay with you and Tim.” She smiles, then looks back shyly to the ground.
Miette smiles back at her, and then at Tim. “Good, then it is settled. We shall tell the Father that you will be staying with me. I would also like to make you another offer. If you wish, you may use my surname as your own. Though we are all equal in La Motte, everyone needs a sense of belonging and family. Once we talk to the Father, you will be part of my family, and my name is yours to use if you please. Oh, and I am not Madam anymore than I am anyone's ladyship. Call me Miette, please.”
They soon reach the church and Miette leads them into the front doors and over to the side, knocking on the door of the Father's office. He invites them in and they sit down across the desk from him. He smiles at all three of them and looks at Miette with a questioning look. “Who are your new friends Miette?”
Miette smiles back at him and introduces the children, telling the Father a short and censored version of the events of the night before. Once she is finished with the tale, she takes a deep breath and moves on to her request. “Father Sebastian, I have lost my entire family, and so have they. We are all lonely and wish to throw in our lots together. I spoke to the children on the way over here and they are willing to stay with me if you approve.”
Father Sebastian looks at both children and asks them, “Is this true? I must hear it from you before I decide who shall be your guardian.”
Laurie only nods shyly, but Tim answers. “It is true Father. She has already done a lot for us, and Laurie has been through so much that she does not trust easily. She has begun to trust Miette some, and we would both like to stay with her.”
Father Sebastian nods at Tim and turns back to Miette. “And you feel that you can care for them? What plans do you have for their well-being?”
Miette smiles. “I thought about it last night Father, while we were liberating the rest of their village. I have a small apartment, as you likely know. There is room in it for all three of us. Neither of them are too young to be left there when I am at work, especially since Tim is well capable of looking after Laurie, and has been for some time. Soon my Patrol will have a headquarters, and I can have as much room there as I will need. I have income from both my job at the clinic and the Patrol. Once we move into the headquarters, Tim can have a job in the stables if he likes, and Laurie will be attending school. She can come with me to the clinic if she wants, and learn to be a nurse.”

Miette's log - 03/26/05 - Part 2
Father Sebastian listens, nodding as Miette lays out her plans. “You have indeed given this a deal of thought in the last hours my child. I believe you can do all that you plan to do, and do it well. I have a great regard for your cousin, and I know you are much like him. Go, and care for the children with my blessing.”
Miette beams happily at Father Sebastian, standing up from her chair and reaching across to shake his hand. “Thank you Father. I am sure we will be happy together.” She looks out the window at the level of the sun, then back to the Father. “We need to be on our way now. There is one more stop we need to make before I can bring the children home and get some rest.”
Leaving the church, Miette heads up the street with the children and steps into Selena's shop. Pheline smiles at them and Miette introduces the children to her. “Good morning Pheline. This is Tim, and this is Laurie. They are going to be living with me, and they need some new clothing. Perhaps three outfits a piece for now. I have some money saved up and will settle on a price with Selena later. Can you take their measurements before I drop of exhaustion, or are you busy this morning?
Pheline laughs. “I am not busy, and I would be happy to help you. You do look tired.” She takes out a tape measure and quickly and efficiently measures both of the children, taking notes. When she finishes she puts the notepad on a worktable. “What type of clothing will they be needing?”
Miette shrugs and laughs. “It has been some time since I was a child. They will need something of a strong fabric that will wear well, and Laurie's will need to be suitable for school. Oh, they will also need cloaks I believe. I am sure you and Selena know better than I what works well. You sew for all the children in La Motte. I trust your judgement.”
Pheline nods and smiles. “All right then. We will let you know when we are finished. Now go home and get some rest.”
Miette thanks her and heads back out the door, finally walking toward home. When they arrive, she leads the children upstairs, shows them where everything is, and some furniture they can sleep on if they are still tired, then hugs them both and heads to bed.

Miette and Lucky 4-2-05
About ten minutes later, as Miette is leaving Lanterne Headquarters she sees the flambuoyant and charming "Lucky" Luc Loupe leaning against a tree, whistling...
Miette smiles and walks over to Lucky. "Good afternoon Monseiur Loupe."
Lucky smiles at her and gives her a grandiose bow. "Mademoiselle Rois et Reines, your beauty shames the springtime as always..."
Miette blushes and looks at the ground between them. "Then it is unfortunate for you that we shall soon be seeing less of each other. Perhaps for me as well, as I will not be hearing your compliments."
Lucky blinks. How do you mean, mademoiselle?"
Miette looks up at him and shrugs. "I had hoped our Patrols would be stationed together. I find you and your men to be entertaining. But fate did not smile on us it seems."
He nods. "It would have been enjoyable to say the least. But better to have a little distance than personality conflicts between teams. We get along quite well with the Blue Mustaches, and I believe your team will like the Lancers."
Miette laughs. "I am sure the men will at any rate. I will as well, but I doubt they will make me laugh as much as you would."
Lucky smiles. "Well that's good, I'd hate to lose my position as your jester..." He grins. "But I do not think Mariel Etalon will ever forgive the welcoming prank we played on them..."
Miette raises an eyebrow. "So that's why she did not wish to be stationed with you?"
He nods. "Yes, she was not thrilled to discover that we'd snuck into their headquarters and replaced their lances with baguettes..."
Miette laughs. "No one seems to appreciate a good joke these days. She looks up at the sun. "It is getting near to dinner time. I should get home to the kids."
Lucky blinks, having not heard that she had children, then bows. "May I have the honor of escorting you, milady?"
Miette smiles, having noticed his surprise. "Of course. I would enjoy your company. I suppose you are curious about my children?"
Lucky smiles and offers her his arm. "Well, I hadn't heard anything about you marrying..." He winks.
Miette takes his arm and shakes her head. "I was promised before the Madness, to a man I had ony met a few times. I had heard enough about him to fervently hope he did not survive though. I have never married. Tim and Laurie are the two children who escaped the slaver camp and told us how to get there."
Lucky nods. "I can't say I'm surprised... You do seem to have a very kind and open heart, my lady..."
Miette smiles. "They needed someone, and Laurie has been through a lot. It seemed like a good way to keep them together. She already was starting to trust me some and so it made sense to me." She shrugs.
Lucky smiles and thinks for a moment. "But how will that affect your posting to the border village? Will you be taking them with you?"
Miette nods. "I hope to. Living in the country will be good for them I think, closer to what they are used to. Tim can have a job in the stables for the Patrol."
Lucky nods. "You'll have to talk about that with your leader, of course, but an extra pair of hands or two can be a real help."
Miette shrugs. "Of course, and the rest of the Patrol as well. If anyone objects to their presence in the headquarters I will have to make other arrangements."
Lucky hesitates a moment. "You do seem to have a couple rather irritable sorts in your party..."
Miette laughs. "Yes, there are those who I think may object. Very likely the same ones who prefer not to be stationed with your Patrol. Much to my dismay. She smiles at him.
He grins at her. "Well, look at it this way, they cannot station us more then four miles apart, we will still cross paths and we can still tease and flirt with each other as it suits us... In a way, it's more romantic than sharing a village, don't you think?"
Miette blushes. "I suppose. You intend to come see my village then?" She grins back at him.
Lucky reaches over and squeezes her hand. "Why not? We won't be on duty all the time, and in point of fact we still owe Martin a ransom. A visit or two would hardly be against the rules..." He grins at her as well. "And as long as I know I'm welcome I might drop by on my own from time to time..."
Miette smiles. "Of course you are welcome."
By now they have reached her building. Lucky says. "Well, I suppose this is where I must leave you..."
Miette nods. "For now. Do not feel that you need to put off any visits until I am in my new village though." She smiles at him.
Lucky smiles and lifts her hand to his lips. "Yes, but proprieties must be observed. You do have two children to look after, after all..."
Miette nods. "True, though Tim is 15. He is more than old enough to look after himself and Laurie. I do not see the harm in occasionally leaving the apartment." She grins and winks.
Lucky nods and squeezes her hand before releasing it. "Then I shall most definitely keep that in mind..."
Miette smiles. "Please do. Until then, goodnight Monseiur Loupe."
Lucky returns the smile. "Goodnight Mademoiselle Rois et Reines..." He waits until she's inside before leaving.
Miette waves her fingers at him and goes inside, walking up the stairs to her small apartment.

Lucky and Miette's Plot - Part 1
<Ron_SWEF> ACTION: The village of Reines looks a lot like Phenix right now, as the villagers haven't really had the leisure to customize things yet...
<Miette> ::stands in the dark stable, her thought about Lucky's smile refusing to go away. On the spur of the moment she decides to ride to Reines. She walks back out of the barn, leading Cheval, and heads for the clinic. After telling Tim and Laurie her plans, Miette mounts Cheval again and rides out of Phenix::
<Ron_SWEF> ::the ride to Reines is quiet, passing through a couple orchards, past a few farmwers who wave at her while working their fields, and such. It doesn't seem long before the headquarters of the Bone Dancers and the Knights of the Blue Mustache is in sight...
<Miette> ::smiles and pats Cheval, urging her to go a bit faster. As soon as she arrives at the front of the headquarters she slips off Cheval's back and ties her to a post, then looks around, hoping the Bone Dancers are not on patrol::
<Ron_SWEF> ::one of the Bone Dancers looks up from her chair by the front door:: Well well, what brings the Lucky Lady out here this morning?
<Miette> ::laughs at the name:: Dancer: Is that how you are all referring to me these days? ::smiles:: I was hoping to spend some time with Lucky. Is he around?
<Ron_SWEF> <Dancer> Sure, he's upstairs in the attic...
<Miette> ::her smile grows wider as she nods:: Dancer: Thank you. ::walks into the headquarters and climbs the stairs to the attic, looking around the large open space::
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky is sitting among a collection of what look like sea chests, polishing an elegant pistol. He looks up when Miette pokes her head up the ladder and grins:: Now there's a sight for bored eyes...
<Miette> ::smiles at him and steps from the ladder to the attic floor:: Lucky: And that grin of yours is just what I needed to see this morning.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he gets up, carefully putting the pistol back in a chest and dropping the lid:: Have a rough night, my lady? ::he steps forward to slip his arms around her::
<Miette> ::leans her head against his chest:: More like a rough morning, but the end of yesterday was not so easy either.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he sighs and squeezes her warmly:: Would you like to tell me about it, or would you rather I distracted you?
<Miette> ::laughs:: It will not take long to tell, and then perhaps you can distract me. Yesterday we rescued the ninth from some gargoyles, and had a lot of injured...mostly them and some farmers. I was up late into the night tending their wounds. This morning, Martin got us up early to finish off the beasts, but Mariel did not approve. They fought, which darkened Martin's already foul mood of late.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky sighs:: I'm hearing a lot about du Vraise lately, and most of it not good...
<Miette> ::frowns:: Please Luc, do not believe the most of it. He is a good man. I wish I knew what has him so upset lately, but I suspect it is a combination of it all. Considering the hearing, I am certain you may well have heard some less than flowery things about me as well. ::sighs::
<Ron_SWEF> ::he shakes his head:: No one's tried to blacken your reputation to my ears...
<Miette> ::laughs:: Perhaps they value their lives too much.
<Ron_SWEF> ::smile:: Between myself, the Captain, and the people in your village, I don't think anyone dares speak ill of you in public...
<Miette> ::blushes a pretty shade of pink:: Really, I do not think I need quite so many people who care so much for my reputation. After all, I am hardly anyone of note anymore.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he pokes her in the ribs teasingly:: You're the pretty girl who runs the clinic in Phenix, that's enough to make you someone of note in La Motte at least...
<Miette> ::giggles and squirms away from his poking finger:: Lately, it seems it is something of note to survive Martin's temper and still be sane. So perhaps I will soon be gathering more prestige.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky sighs and leads her over to one of the chest, sitting down on it and pulling her down onto his lap:: Tell me then, what ails your fine commander?
<Miette> ::leans her head back on his shoulder and sighs:: I do not know. I try to get him to talk to me, but all he does is frown and ignore me. I do know it is not recent events though. He was grumpy long before Nic acted on my joking suggest... ::realizes too late that she has given up her part in the scandal, whether anyone else is afraid to tell him or not::
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky nods:: You make a joke and your comrade took it seriously. I heard...
<Miette> ::nods:: I thought you said no one had spoken ill of me in your presence. The hearing board all but told me to hold my tongue in the future.
<Ron_SWEF> ::shrug:: I heard what the board had to say. It was an accident, you didn't mean for things to turn out that way.
<Miette> ::nods and sighs:: No, I most certainly did not. But I still feel as though Nic's current suspension is partly my responsibility. Whether it is or is not, I do know it is not what has Martin in such a foul mood.
<Ron_SWEF> Do you have any notion of what is bothering him, then?
<Miette> ::shakes her head:: Not a one. I wish that I did, because then perhaps I could help. With Nic gone, and Halden so shy...I do not spend much time with Etienne or Selena. I had to ride all this way simply for a smile.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he squeezes her gently and gives her one of his patented rogueish grins:: Will this do, milady?
<Miette> ::laughs:: It most certainly will. ::tips her head up and kisses him on the cheek::
<Ron_SWEF> ::he sighs happily and drops a kiss on her forehead:: Would you like me to help with du Vraise? If he continues in the manner you say he is, then he'll probably end up in trouble with the Captain...
<Miette> I am quite afraid that he will. Things seem awfully tense at our headquarters. Sometimes it feels as if there is a cloud over the brightest days. I imagine I can keep Jean-Marie at bay for a time if need be, but not forever. If you feel that you can help, please try. But do not tell him I came to you.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he laughs:: If they have time to ask questions, I am doing things wrong. But for now, I will confine my help to advice if you don't mind. It's better that any solutions come from within your group, you know?
<Miette> ::nods:: Perhaps. So you have advice for me then? I will take any help I can get.
<Ron_SWEF> Well... ::he thinks:: I do not know du Vraise well, but I did note a few things when he was living at the barracks... He didn't seem to have any friends, or seem interested in making any... And he always carried himself as if he had nothing to prove, which for many men is a sign that they feel they do have something to prove, to themselves if no one else.
<Miette> ::nods:: I know he feels he does, and I know why. Unfortunately I do not see how I can help him if that is the problem.
<Ron_SWEF> ::nod:: He also seemed to allow himself no leisure time. Either he was walking the streets as a Lanterne, or he was repairing or making tack for someone's horse. I never could figure out what he did to relax, except for that one beaten-up old novel he kept tucked away in his room...
<Ron_SWEF> I'm beginning to think he just never did..
<Miette> I have tried a few times to convince him to take some time off, but he will not. And now, all of his free time is to be spent in the library for the next few days.
<Ron_SWEF> Reading old and boring books about how to make your men hate you, I heard... ::shakes his head:: A fate worse than fines...

Lucky and Miette's Plot - Part 2
<Miette> ::nods:: And certain to not help his foul mood. I wish he would meet a kind lady to spend some time with.
<Ron_SWEF> Du Vraise? A lady? Ooh, pity the poor lady if that should happen... ::laugh::
<Miette> ::leans away from him a bit and gives him a funny look:: You know, I have heard that some people pity me because I receive so much of your attention. So perhaps you should be careful who you pity. ::grins::
<Ron_SWEF> ::he laughs:: I only mean that du Vraise would be so busy trying to pay the lady proper respect that he'd bore her to death... If you'll forgive a bit of blunt speech, what the man needs is to be bound, stripped naked, and thrown through the front door of Madame Marie's with a sack of coins and instructions to not let him out till every last coin is gone.
<Miette> ::laughs heartily despite the firey red colour in her face at the thought:: Perhaps so, but I am too much a lady to tell him so.
<Miette> Pranks like that are your domain.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky laughs:: Why my dear Lady Rois et Reines, are you suggesting I actually do it?
<Miette> ::bites on one of her knuckles as she laughs harder:: I would never suggest such a thing! ::tries very hard to look shocked:: Unless of course it is a dire emergency, which I think this may well be.
<Ron_SWEF> Well if you're going to do that, I want one too... ::he bites one of her other knuckles:: Well then, perhaps you wouldn't suggest we take up a collection for him and lay an ambush outside the library?
<Miette> ::giggles as Lucky bites her knuckle, then fishes in a small pouch and hands him a coin with a grin:: Personally mon chere I would never suggest it, as I have been told to keep my suggestions to myself in the future. However, I would gladly contribute.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky laughs and accepts the coin:: Alright, I'll salt the hat with this, and perhaps even wander by your headquarters to see who else will contribute...
<Miette> ::smiles:: Considering his recent mood, I am certain others would. Perhaps you would be wise not to ask Selena though. I have seen the way she looks at him. ::shrugs::
<Ron_SWEF> You think she fancies him?
<Miette> I think she might. She looks at him in a way not all that different from the way that I look at you. ::winks at him::
<Ron_SWEF> ::he laughs and steals a kiss from her lips:: You should be careful, milady, you are sailing dangerous waters. I am a pirate, you know...
<Miette> ::grins and lays a hand on the side of his face:: I am quite used to facing danger by now. Compared to gargoyles, you are as safe as the Duke's home.
<Ron_SWEF> ::wink:: Are you sure my bite isn't poisonous? I can bite you if you'd like to settle the issue...
<Miette> ::blushes, feeling warm all of a sudden:: I am certain it is not, however, if you would like to test the theory...
<Ron_SWEF> ::he grins:: Thus I proceed, in the name of science... ::he bends closer and nibbles on her earlobe::
<Miette> ::shudders a bit as his touch sends shivers down her spine:: Definately not poisonous. You see? I am certain I am safe with you
<Ron_SWEF> Hmm, I don't know... That shiver seemed rather like a poison reaction... ::he nibbles just below her ear:: More study might be required...
<Miette> ::reaches up her hand and runs her fingers through his hair:: Trust me, it was nothing to do with poison...
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky grins and leans back:: Well now, milady, perhaps that's enough experimenting for now... At least until after my little brother tracks you down and demands to know what your intentions are...
<Miette> ::laughs:: Your little brother? I think I am fairly safe from him. Though perhaps you ought to watch out for Jean-Marie. I was seen coming up here after all. He may well hear that we spent a good deal of time alone in the attic. ::grins::
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky nods:: I need to be very careful around you, milady, as it's very possible I might develop some intentions...
<Miette> ::blushes and looks down at her lap:: I must admit something to you Luc. I do not believe I would be adverse to those intentions.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he squeezes her warmly:: You're a sweet girl, but you'd better get off my lap before something shocking happens to you...
<Miette> ::laughs and stands up, but then leans over to kiss him gently on the lips, her long hair falling all around them:: I shock a lot less easily than I used to, but perhaps you have a point.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he stands up as well:: The point being that thanks to these very hard floorboards this is definitely neither the time or place...
<Miette> ::blushes:: I agree. Perhaps we should find some lunch then. By the way, have you heard the nickname your unit has bestowed upon me?
<Ron_SWEF> What, the Lucky Lady?
<Miette> ::laughs and nods:: Yes. I agree with them actually, and find it rather cute.
<Ron_SWEF> Yes, I suppose it does sound better than their prior nickame, Loony Lady...
<Miette> ::laughs and pokes him in the stomach:: Now I know you are jesting. Who would call me that?
<Ron_SWEF> People who'd think you were daft enough to seek out my company?
<Miette> ::shrugs:: I do not consider myself daft, and I hope you do not either.
<Ron_SWEF> Well, I do think you're rather silly...
<Miette> Oh? You do?
<Ron_SWEF> Well of course... Any woman who'd ride five miles just to see me smile is quite silly. The smart woman would get me to do the riding... ::wink::
<Miette> ::laughs:: If only I had a way to tell you I needed to see the smile. ::heads for the ladder, starting to climb down:: Are you planning to stay up here in the gloom all day, or to take a Lucky Lady to lunch?
<Ron_SWEF> ::he grins:: Lunch sounds better. I can polish my pistol later...
<Miette> I would hope I am better than your pistol. ::climbs to the bottom of the ladder and waits for him there::
<Ron_SWEF> ::he slides down the ladder with ease:: Well, rather than go into detail on that... ::he offers her an arm:: Shall we?
<Miette> ::smiles and takes his arm:: We shall.

Miette Visits Jean-Marie
<Ron_SWEF> ACTION: The ride to Bascone is quiet, as Lt. Riche seems intent more on enjoying the spring morning than starting a conversation. Actually, he's also not sure what to say to her as she seems to have been in foul moods...::
<Ron_SWEF> ACTION: He leaves her at Madame Marie's, instructing her to find him at Headquarters when she is done (is that leaving her an opening or what?). The health checks are nothing much to speak of, as all of them (especially Gabriella) keep themselves in excellent health...
<Ron_SWEF> Afterward, Miette is on her own... Bwah ha ha!
<Ron_SWEF> <<<Begin When Ready>>>
<Miette> :: leaves Madame Marie's, seriously considering searching out Lucky, but deciding she does not want to get him into any more trouble, even if she is willing to risk it. Deciding instead to go right to the source of her problems, she rides to Headquarters::
<Ron_SWEF> :: the guard on duty, recognizing her but apparently not being up on gossip, salutes her crisply and lets her past:: The Captain's in the sword studio, Patrolman...
<Miette> :: nods at the guard and dismounts Cheval in the yard, tying her to a post before heading to the sword studio to find Jean-Marie::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Miette finds Jean-Marie practicing with his sword, though at the moment there's no one else in there with him. He visibly sighes when he sees her enter:: Hello, Miette...
<Miette> Hello Jean-Marie...
<Ron_SWEF> :: he sheaths his sword and dagger and wipes his forehead with a towel:: You came to yell at me, of course... Shall we get it over with?
<Miette> Well, it seems you know me fairly well. Which means you ought to have the brains in your head to know full well this will never work! Why punish my entire team because you disapprove of Lucky and I, only to have me more adamant to see him in the end?
<Ron_SWEF> :: Jean-Marie scowls at her:: Convinced of your own importance as always, cousin... I am not punishing your entire team on your account.
<Miette> :: pulls his letter from a pocket in her cloak:: You are sending us all away for weeks, and you so much as admit that part of the reason is to keep us apart!
<Ron_SWEF> Part of it, yes, but far from all of it. You are not the only Wolfhound in need of cooling-off time.
<Miette> :: glares at him angrily:: I do NOT need cooling off time!
<Ron_SWEF> :: he folds his arms:: Don't you?
<Miette> :: starts to yell again, then folds her own arms and lowers her voice:: No, I do not. At least, I did not until I got your letter.
<Ron_SWEF> You need time away from Monsieur Loupe, that's for certain. Or he needs time away from you, I'm not certain which.
<Miette> No Jean-Marie, I absolutely do not. In fact, right now, he is the one person in Theah I need to see above all others!
<Ron_SWEF> And he is the one person in Theah whom you will not be seeing today, Miette. Has it not sunk in that I had to suspend a man from La Lanterne yesterday because of you two?
<Miette> :: sighs:: Of course it did! And do you not think I am riddled with guilt? Jean-Marie, I never intended such a thing to happen. I fully own up to my part in the events, but what I wish for right now is comfort and a friend. I want Luc... :: perhaps to Jean-Marie's surprise, she buries her face in her hands and sobs::
<Ron_SWEF> :: he sighs but doesn't show any sympathy:: Luc Loupe is far from the only friend you have, Miette. In fact, that's one of the reasons you are all being punished together, so that hopefully your unit will start relying on each other rather than backstabbing your leader at the first sign of trouble.
<Miette> :: looks up at him, tears streaming down her face:: I did not backstab him Jean-Marie. I went to a friend for advice. We were only trying to help.
<Ron_SWEF> I wasn't referring to you in that instance... :: Jean-Marie scowls:: No, you just tried to help with the worst possible results.
<Miette> I understand what you are trying to do, but I sincerely doubt that it will help. Most of my unit does not really seem to be interested in getting to know me. Nic was my only friend among them.
<Ron_SWEF> Miette, if I tell you something, will you promise that it does not leave this room?
<Miette> :: nods:: Of course.
<Ron_SWEF> If the Tenth doesn't come back from this mission with a more cohesive sense of group loyalty, I may break up the unit and reassign everyone to separate patrols. LeChevalier and von Stroheim particularly.
<Miette> :: sighs:: Obviously I would not like to see that happen, but if it does, may I make a request?
<Ron_SWEF> :: nod:: Go ahead.
<Miette> It has two parts really. I wish to be with Vincent. He has been kind to me and tried to comfort me. And I do not wish to join the Bone Dancers. I am sure you know why.
<Ron_SWEF> :: Jean-Marie nods:: The second part of it, I can easily promise. I don't want the headache that assigning you to the Third would bring. As for Patrolman von Stroheim, I cannot say what will happen.
<Miette> :: nods:: I would miss him if we were split, but the second part of the request is the part that is more important to me. :: sighs again:: Jean-Marie, please forgive me...
<Ron_SWEF> :: he sighs and pulls her close for a hug:: I do, cousin, it's just... So many things have gone wrong lately, it's not just the Tenth. This trading agreement with the Blood Hunters puts a strain on all of us.
<Miette> :: nods and hugs him tightly:: I know. Which is what makes my actions even worse. You asked me to watch Martin's back, and I got him into so much trouble. And worse, during a time when I knew you were already under a lot of stress.
<Ron_SWEF> :: nod:: If it's any consolation, I know Loupe. His piratical heart won't beat any less for you because of a little separation...
<Miette> :: blushes and laughs:: I believe the opposite is more likely.
<Ron_SWEF> :: smile:: You have nothing to worry about in his regard...
<Miette> I know that. But I will still miss him, and Phenix, and you. You are my last family. Do not think Luc is the only one I will cry for on the road at night.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he smiles:: If it helps any, look out for Mademoiselle Therese. If I remember her reports accurately, this will not be a pleasant journey for her.
<Miette> :: nods:: I will, though look what happened to the last person you told me to look out for. Jean-Marie, may I see him? I owe him an apology.
<Ron_SWEF> Martin? Yes, he's upstairs...
<Miette> :: nods again:: Thank you. And I swear to you this will never happen again. I will be a model Patrolman.
<Ron_SWEF> :: Jean-Marie laughs:: Well... Just try not to mess up on that order of magnitude again, alright?
<Miette> :: nods and laughs a little:: I most certainly can promise that. I will see you when we return. :: hugs him again before heading upstairs to find Martin's room::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Miette quickly locates the room, for in fact the door is open. Martin is sitting up in bed, with Anne giving him occasional assistance with a bowl of oatmeal::
<Miette> :: pauses in the open doorway, clearing her throat softly::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Anne looks up and smiles:: You're not missing any limbs, my husband must have calmed down...
<Miette> :: shrugs and gives her a lopsided smile:: Jean-Marie did not raise his voice once. It was he in danger of missing limbs, though I assure you I left him in one piece.
<Ron_SWEF> :: Martin swallows and makes a face, oatmeal was never his favorite:: Miette?
<Miette> :: steps farther into the room and nods:: How are you?
<Ron_SWEF> :: he grimaces:: I have the hangover that will not die, thanks to Selena and Big Paul the Bouncer...
<Miette> :: looks at the floor and takes a deep breath:: I need to tell you something Martin...
<Ron_SWEF> :: Anne quietly excuses herself::
<Ron_SWEF> <Martin> Yes?
<Miette> :: sits down in Anne's chair and frowns:: You will not like it...
<Ron_SWEF> :: rubs his head:: Today, I don't like anything...
<Miette> Yes well, actually... :: sighs and just gets it over with:: After the argument with the Lancers I needed to see someone smile. I went to see Luc, and we talked about you. The prank at Marie's...we planned it together. I am so very sorry.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he looks up at her through a bleary haze:: Spell it out, Miette. What did you do?
<Miette> Well, not much really. I was not one of the ones actively involved. I simply told him you needed to relax... I suppose you could say I spoke when I should not have done so...again...
<Ron_SWEF> I'm still not following you, Miette... My head is pounding like a blacksmith's anvil and I can hardly think.
<Miette> :: sighs:: Right. And I am sorry because I encouraged Luc to do what he did to you.
<Miette> :: hopes that is simple enough to get past the headache::
<Ron_SWEF> I remember drinking and falling asleep in the stable, and then I was at Madame Marie's... :: he looks up:: Did Loupe take me there?
<Miette> :: nods miserably:: I am surprised Jean-Marie did not tell you so.
<Ron_SWEF> I'm sure he did, but frankly he was yelling too loudly for me to remember most of what he said. Big Paul made quite an impression on my skull...
<Miette> Luc did it because I went to him for advice. We were trying to help you relax, and it all blew up around us. Please Martin, forgive me for my part in this insanity.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he sighs and rubs his head again:: I suppose you didn't know how much Selena and I had to drink... :: realizing what he just said, he looks around to see if anyone else heard that::
<Miette> :: laughs quietly and shakes her head:: No. We certainly did not. But now I know why she is so upset today.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he nods:: She probably doesn't remember much of that night... She's smaller than I am, and matched me drink for drink...
<Miette> Umm... Judging from the look on her face when we heard what had happened, she remembers enough.
<Ron_SWEF> Well, nothing happened between us... We drank and we talked and we fell asleep, that was it...
<Miette> :: shrugs:: Martin, it is not my business either way. I have no room to judge.
<Ron_SWEF> Well... She may think something else happened, I don't want her hurt...
<Miette> :: frowns:: I do not think that she does, but I will talk to her if you wish.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he sighs and shrugs:: Do what you think is best...
<Miette> :: sighs:: That is precisely what got us all into this mess
<Ron_SWEF> :: Anne peers around the door frame:: Martin really should rest, Miette...
<Miette> :: nods:: Anne: I know. And though I have permission to be here, I think Jean-Marie will chase me back to Phenix himself if I do not soon leave.
<Ron_SWEF> <Anne> Yes, and Michel is waiting downstairs...
<Miette> :: nods at her, then stands and looks down at Martin:: Martin: This is not your fault Martin. I came here to own up to my part in the events. Things just all went wrong at once. Please remember we all miss you.
<Ron_SWEF> :: he snorts a little, then winces:: I'm sure...
<Miette> :: sighs:: We do. I would not lie to a sick man. Rest now, and get well. :: bends over to hug him before turning, nodding to Anne, and walking downstairs to rejoin Michel::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Martin sprawls out on the bed again, wincing and biting back a groan::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Michel, immaculate and polite, nods to her as she arrives:: Are you ready to return?
<Miette> :: sighs and nods:: I am. Unless you would take me to Reines? :: smiles innocently at him::
<Ron_SWEF> :: Michel smiles:: I'm afraid not... He'll still be out on lumber crew anyway...
<Miette> :: nods again:: I know. We ought to get back. I have a lot yet to do.
<Ron_SWEF> :: nod:: So do I... ::he climbs on his horse:: Let us away, then...
<Miette> :: nods and mounts Cheval, riding out of the yard behind him::

Nic Visits Miette
<Nicolas_Belden> ACTION: Miette is heading back after working in Bascone earlier in the day, when she reaches the clinic, she finds the front door open and a horse tied up outside.
<Miette> :: dismounts, tying Cheval to the post by the clinic, knowing Tim will bring her to the stable when he sees her, and rushes into the clinic, thinking maybe the strange horse outside may mean an emergency::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: is inside the clinic, holding up a vial of medicine and looking at it closely, when he hears Miette enter and turns, smiling at her:: Miette: Bonjour.
<Miette> :: her jaw drops and she almost starts crying again, but fights it, having spent too much time crying in the last two days. She rushes to Nic and hugs him tightly:: Nic: I am so glad to see you. Theus must have told you how much I needed to see a friendly face.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: hugs her back, having no clue what she's talking about though:: Miette: I'm glad to see you too.
<Miette> :: takes the vial from Nic and puts it carefully away before he can drop it:: Nic: Things have gone to Legion around here since you have been gone. You are lucky you caught us. We are being sent to Tamis tomorrow. :: sighs::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: perks up at the mention of Tamis:: Miette: Really?
<Miette> :: nods:: Nic: Do not look so happy about it. It is a punishment. And a good deal of the reason for it rests on my shoulders.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: raises an eyebrow:: Miette: Punishment? For what?
<Miette> :: shrugs:: Nic: You will likely find it funny. My cousin did not. I went to Lucky about Martin's bad mood of late. He and the Dancers kidnapped Martin and threw him into Marie's with a sack of coins. Apparently it did not go well... :: sighs and moves to a shelf, inspecting the vials and carefully packing some in a small wooden box for the trip::
<Nicolas_Belden> Miette: I do not see the problem.
<Miette> Nic: Martin was drunk. He tore the place up. He has a concussion, and has been removed from his command. He will be serving in the First patrol. Our little fun may have cost him his career.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: looks somewhat surprised:: Miette: Really? Things have changed it seems. But I can't say I am completely surprised, Martin seemed rather stressed, I was afraid he wouldn't be able to handle everything the Nightmare would throw at him. It seems I was right.
<Miette> :: shrugs and packs another vial:: Nic: I do not know if it was the Nightmare or not, but now he is injured, and my cousin is sending the tenth on this long trip. He admitted to me that part of the reason is to keep Lucky and I apart. I feel horrible. :: fights tears again but loses this time, as her eyes fill up and spill over::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: looks unsure what to do for a moment and pulls a handkerchief from his pocket, stepping forward to wipe her tears with it, unfortunately it has a tiny bit of blue paint on it, which smears across her cheek a little::
<Miette> :: smiles weakly at Nic:: Nic: Sorry. I seem to have sprung a continuous leak these past couple of days.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: notices the paint and pulls the kerchief back, smiling:: Miette: That looks good on you. :: points to a mirror nearby::
<Miette> :: looks in the mirror and shrugs, giggling just a little:: Nic: I always did favour the colour blue. :: sighs:: So you have been painting at the convent?
<Nicolas_Belden> :: nods:: Miette: Yes, you should come see it sometime, you wouldn't recognize it. :: smiles::
<Miette> :: frowns and looks down at the floor:: Nic: I can not. We are grounded to Phenix until we leave tomorrow, and for Theus only knows how long after we return.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: frowns reaching over to lift her chin and smile at her, unfortunately he does so with the hand still holding the painted handkerchief:: Miette: Whoops, sorry. :: hurriedly puts it away before her entire face ends up blue::
<Miette> :: shrugs:: Nic: No worries. If my face is blue, I will always remember a friend waits for my return. Lucky is grounded as well, so you are the only visitor I can expect to have.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: frowns and nods, thinking for a moment:: Miette: I wonder if there might be a way for me to accompany you to Tamis. I would very much like to see it, and then you would have a friend for longer. :: smiles::
<Miette> :: shakes her head:: Nic: I doubt it. The trip is patrol business, and you are suspended. I would ask my cousin, but he is not inclined to grant me any favours lately.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: thinks again:: Miette: So if Martin is with the First, who is leading the Tenth?
<Miette> Nic: A new man. Michel is his name. He accompanied me to Bascone today for the other part of my punishment. He seems all right, but I can not help missing Martin anyway. And of course he would not allow me to try to contact Lucky. :: sighs::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: frowns again:: Miette: He won't allow letters?
<Miette> Nic: To be honest, I do not know if I am allowed to send him a letter. It was not expressly forbidden. Michel could not deliver one though, as he was escorting me. And I certainly did not leave one with Jean-Marie.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: nods:: Miette: So everyone in this village is forbidden to leave?
<Miette> :: shakes her head:: Nic: Only the members of the tenth patrol.
<Nicolas_Belden> Miette: Then shoudn't it be a simply matter to find someone to take your letter?
<Miette> :: nods:: Nic: It should be. Though the farmers all work from dawn to dark, the Lancers are on double duty, and Tim is busy preparing the horses and wagons for the trip.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: frowns again:: Miette: So there is no one? :: thinks:: Well I am free to move about. Perhaps I could deliver one for you. Before we leave for Tamis that is. :: smiles::
<Miette> :: frowns:: Nic: We? You can not come Nic. Michel would be furious I am sure, and if Jean-Marie found out...
<Nicolas_Belden> :: waves a hand:: Miette: I will have a talk with this Michel, and convince him to take me along. :: smiles:: He will need knowledge of the Giant Nightmare in Tamis, of this I'm sure.
<Miette> :: laughs:: Nic: Perhaps you should not tell him about the Nightmare. At least not if you one day want to be allowed back in this patrol. Not everyone can understand it after all. But...you would do that for me? Deliver a letter?
<Nicolas_Belden> Miette: Of course. I am the obvious choice, since I can come and go here whenever I like.
<Miette> :: nods and moves over to her desk, sitting down and taking out parchment and a quill:: Nic: I am sorry by the way, that I never came to help at the convent. I meant to, before this mess... :: sighs::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: nods and smiles:: Miette: I am not finished yet. Perhaps you will be allowed to leave again once we get back from Tamis.
<Miette> :: dips her quill in the ink and writes a quick note that reads, "My Dearest Luc, I am so sorry our little chat in the attic got you into so much trouble. I do not know if you have been told, but my unit is being sent to Tamis. It may be two or three weeks before we return and I miss you already." She stops writing for a moment and looks up at Nic::
<Miette> Nic: I hope so.
<Miette> :: dips her quill again and writes, "Jean-Marie is punishing us, but Vincent assures me it will only make us happier when we are reunited. I hope Theus gives my unit the speed of the wind, and I will send word again when we return. Keep well, and remember I am always your Lucky Lady." She signs her name and seals the letter, holding it to her heart before handing it to Nic.::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: takes the letter and slips it into his coat:: Miette: I will take this as soon as I leave here. When did you say we'll be leaving for Tamis?
<Miette> :: sighs:: Nic: You are asking for trouble. Please do not do this.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: raises an eyebrow:: Miette: Don't do what?
<Miette> Nic: I am afraid if you follow us to Tamis you will be in trouble, as well as in danger. I have caused enough trouble already and I do not wish to add you to the rest.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: shakes his head and smiles:: Miette: I will not be 'following' you, I will convince Michel to take me along as part of the patrol. And besides, if I didn't go with you I would worry about you, all of you. You are a skilled patrol, but I fear none of you truly understand the Giant Nightmare.
<Miette> :: sighs:: Nic: We leave tomorrow. Michel is likely in Martin's old quarters packing up his things. If you wish to ask him, I can not stop you, but I do not think he will allow it.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: smiles:: Miette: Leave that to me. I will deliver your letter and return tomorrow morning to speak with Michel.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: thinks of something and looks around:: Miette: So will Therese be running the clinic while you are gone?
<Miette> Nic: Jean-Marie's orders suggested that Michel bring Therese with us. So I would assume Michel plans to bring her to Tamis. If you want to speak with her tonight though she is likely in the kitchen eating at this time of day.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: frowns:: Miette: Then I have even more reason to go. Thank you for telling me. :: smiles:: I think I will go ahead and deliver your letter. It is getting late.
<Miette> :: nods and hugs him tightly:: Nic: I am glad you came tonight. I have been missing you.
<Nicolas_Belden> :: hugs her back:: Miette: Likewise. :: looks around over her shoulder as he hugs her:: But your clinic could use more color.
<Miette> :: laughs:: Nic: Perhaps you can help me when you finish with the convent. Thank you again for taking my letter. Oh, and just in case it is also forbidden, you may wish to ride around Bascone and avoid my cousin. :: she winks at him::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: laughs:: Miette: I doubt I will have any trouble. See you tomorrow. :: turns and heads for the door::
<Miette> :: watches him go, and turns to pack a few more vials, completely forgetting about the paint drying on her face::
<Nicolas_Belden> :: exits the clinic and mounts his horse, heading off at a leasurely, but quick, pace out of Phenix::
