Lucky did what!?
Jean-Marie follows Lucky and Miette into the apartment just in time to see him laying her down on her bed...
Miette stares at Jean-Marie, eyes wide.
Lucky turns around slowly. "Good evening, Captain..."
Jean-Marie steps over to Lucky and punches him in the face. "I've put up with a lot, Loupe. But this is going too far."
Miette sits up, trying not to pass out. "Jean-Marie no!"
Lucky manages not to fall over, but it takes a moment for him to turn back around. "I was helping her to her room, Captain, nothing more..."
Miette says, "He is telling you the truth. I am injured and asked him to help me."
Jean-Marie ignores Miette and grabs Lucky by the shirt, shoving him against the wall. "I'm sure that's all it was, of course... Certainly it wasn't the prelude to my cousin's violation, because we all know what a man of honor you are, Loupe." Sarcasm drips from his voice. "DO YOU THINK I'M STUPID?!"
Lucky tries to shove him away, unsuccessful at the moment. "I'm beginning to wonder... Damn it, Captain, even if that was why I was here, Miette's an adult and her own woman."
Miette turns to glare at Lucky. "Do you really think calling him stupid is going to help in this situation Luc?"
Luc is unable to reply as Jean-Marie plants a fist in his stomach, then throws him to the floor. Jean-Marie draws his sword. "If you aren't out of this building and on your way back to Reines in two minutes, Loupe..." He leaves the exact threat unspecified, mainly because he's too angry to think straight.
Miette yells, "Jean-Marie stop! Look at this!" She pulls up her skirts and unwinds the bandage on her ankle, showing the holes from the blood snake's fangs.
Jean-Marie looks, though it takes him a few moments to realize what he is seeing. "When did that happen?"
Miette answers, "This morning. It was a blood snake like the wolves. Before Martin managed to stop the bleeding I lost a lot of blood. Luc carried me to bed because I could not get from the party to here without fainting."
Jean-Marie frowns and glances at Lucky for a moment. "Then why did you even go out there? That kind of blood loss is nothing to play with..."
Lucky stands there, scowling at Jean-Marie but not speaking. He appears to be thinking about something.
Miette sighs. "I am a doctor Jean-Marie. I know that better than anyone. I went to the party because I did not wish to lie here all night."
Jean-Marie sighs, though the tension hasn't left his body. "Then get some rest. I suppose the pirate is innocent this time..."
Miette glares at Jean-Marie. "And every time. He has not touched me Jean-Marie. Do not fear for my honor."
Luc comes to a decision. "It's becoming apparent to me, Rois et Reines, that you are never going to trust me. I don't know whether that's because of my past, or if you are a madman when it comes to your cousin, but I am tired of being insulted and threatened simply because of who I am and who I love." He pulls the silver badge from his shoulder and sets it down on the dresser. "You have my resignation, Captain."
Miette looks shocked. "Luc no! Your patrol means too much to you."
Jean-Marie stares at him in shock, and Lucky pulls off his Lanterne tabard as well, setting it beside the badge. "Miette, I am not going to follow a man who won't trust me, and I am most certainly not giving you up. If he needs me that badly, I am not hard to find. Changing my mind, however, will be another matter."
Miette stares at him with a look remarkably similar to her cousin's.
Lucky bows to Miette and blows her a kiss. "Goodnight, ma chere..." He turns and leaves.
Miette turns to Jean-Marie. "Did he just...?" She blinks in surprise.
The shocked look fades from Jean-Marie's face, replaced by a pensieve expression. "He did."
Miette stands up and very slowly steps to her dresser, picking up the silver badge and staring at it. "But... he loves his patrol..."
Jean-Marie sighs and picks up the tabard. "Perhaps not as much as we thought."
Miette smiles a little, blinking back tears. "Or perhaps he loves me more than you thought."
Jean-Marie shakes his head a little, he's not willing to admit anything just yet. "I'd better be going. Anne wanted me to invite you two to dinner tomorrow night, but I think it will just be you if you come..."
Miette turns around to frown at him. "I will come. And I will talk to Luc. Regardless of whether or not he still commands a patrol, he is still courting me. And you did tell me to bring him to dinner."
Jean-Marie shakes his head. "I'd rather he weren't there, but I know Anne will insist on inviting him anyway."
Miette sighs. "I do not even know if he will come, but either way... I love him Jean-Marie. And it is rather apparent that he loves me as well. Why can you not see that?"
He shakes his head, but doesn't answer. "Good night, Miette..."
Miette glares angrily at Jean-Marie. "Good night Jean-Marie." She turns toward her bed too quickly and faints, dropping in a heap on the floor, Lucky's badge still clutched in her hand.
Jean-Marie doesn't move quite fast enough to catch her, but he manages to keep her from knocking her head on anything. He carefully lifts her up and puts her to bed, putting the badge on the stand by her head. Still shaking his head, he leaves the tabard on her table and leaves, shutting the door behind him.

Miette and Her Much-Missed Man
<Ron_SWEF> <<<7th Sea - Heart of the Rois et Reines>>>
<Ron_SWEF> Lucky is probably in one of the bunkhouses, since none of the farmers have quite earned their own land to build on yet.
<Ron_SWEF> <<<Begin>>>
<Miette> ::heads for Lucky's bunkhouse and walks in, going straight to his area::
<Ron_SWEF> ::Lucky's got a card game set up on his bunk, playing with several other men but since they don't seem to be playing for money no one's trying to wring his neck. He smiles as he sees her approach:: Deal me out, gentlemen, something far more interesting just came along. ::with that, he springs over the bed to grab her up in a big hug::
<Miette> ::laughs and hugs him back:: I am glad you see me as more interesting than cards.
<Ron_SWEF> ::grins and swings her around a little:: Well, you're a lot cuter than the Queen of Spades... ::gives her a fast smooch:: Kiss better, too.
<Miette> ::smiles:: Quite true. She is rather ugly.
<Ron_SWEF> ::carries her out of the bunkhouse, since there's next to no privacy in there:: How long have you been back? I've heard about refugees flooding the convent, but nothing about who came with them...
<Miette> ::sighs:: I have been back long enough for some very bad news.
<Ron_SWEF> ::sets her down carefully:: What is it?
<Miette> You must keep this quiet. The Duke does not want panic on his hands.
<Ron_SWEF> ::nods slowly::
<Miette> ::sighs and paces:: Jean-Marie welcomed a man into his home earlier. They say he greeted him like family. This man poisoned him. Etjole attempted to heal him, but now they both lie near death.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Luc curses quietly:: Do they know who it was? Have they caught him?
<Miette> ::stares at the ground, hiding her wet eyes:: They know who it was. Catching him is my job. It is the hope that I can convince him to give me an antidote.
<Ron_SWEF> ::frowns and looks down at her:: Why is it your job? Do you know this person?
<Miette> ::nods, afraid to admit it for fear of what he will think::
<Ron_SWEF> ::rubs her upper arms gently to reassure her:: Is it anyone I've met?
<Miette> ::shakes her head:: No. ::sighs and looks up at him:: It is my brother.
<Ron_SWEF> Your... ::blinks:: That's right, you did mention a brother once... Damien, wasn't it?
<Miette> ::nods::
<Ron_SWEF> You spoke very affectionately about him, why would he do this? ::tries to lighten the mood a little:: Not that I haven't wanted to slip the Captain a little something myself, but I was thinking more along the lines of a regurgative...
<Miette> ::smiles a little at the joke, though it is weak:: He is not the man I knew. He is now one of what Nic calls the Blood Tasters. The poison in Jean-Marie's veins is the venom of his pet blood spiders.
<Ron_SWEF> ::can't help but shudder:: That is not good at all... Is there anything I can do to help?
<Miette> ::shakes her head:: Only I can help. We ran into Damien earlier, and at my request he freed the people he had captured. That is why I have been asked to find him. Perhaps he will give me an antidote.
<Ron_SWEF> ::Luc squeezes her tightly:: I hope so...
<Miette> ::sighs:: But if not... before Etjole lost consciousness he gave me three arrows with amber points. He thinks they will be enough to kill him... ::breaks down and cries::
<Ron_SWEF> ::holds her tight and strokes her hair:: You said it yourself, he's not the man you knew...
<Miette> But to me he is. To me he is still nothing but kind. I do not understand how he can hug me and kiss the top of my head, just like always, then command his spiders to kill our cousin.
<Ron_SWEF> :shakes his head:: Something's changed him, probably beyond recovery...
<Miette> I can not believe that. There is still good in him. I felt it.
<Ron_SWEF> I'm not going to argue with hope, cherie... ::kisses her forehead:: It would be wonderful if you were right. Just be careful, please?
<Miette> ::nods:: Of course I will. But I also can not kill him on sight. We need information from him, assuming I can find him at all. It is disturbing irony that he is the one who taught me to track, only to become my prey.
<Ron_SWEF> I'll bet he wants to be found... If he just wanted Jean-Marie dead, he would have used a dagger, not poison.
<Miette> ::sighs:: Somehow Luc, that does not make me feel better. Thank Theus I will not be going alone.
<Ron_SWEF> Who's going with you?
<Miette> Halden and Etienne.
<Ron_SWEF> ::nods:: Good men to have at your back, if what I hear is correct.
<Miette> ::nods:: They are. Etienne and I have had our differences, but he has long since realized I am not your average noble. ::laughs a little::
<Ron_SWEF> ::smiles and keeps stroking her hair:: And did Halden ever make peace with Patrolman Roux?
<Miette> ::nods:: He did. They both seem very happy with each other these days.
<Ron_SWEF> ::smiles:: I'm glad. Love should always be a welcome thing, no matter how strange the situation.
<Miette> ::looks up at him with a smile:: As far as I am concerned it is more than welcome.
<Ron_SWEF> ::smiles and bends down to kiss her softly:: I'm glad to hear it...
<Miette> ::returns his kiss, then sighs:: I can not stay much longer Luc. Time is critical. I hope you are correct and that Damien wishes to be found. It will make things much faster.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he nods, then pulls her close again for a hug:: If you need me, you know where to find me... ::he laughs a little:: Who knows, perhaps with the Captain down they'll send someone to try and lure me back to the Patrol...
<Miette> ::holds him close, not wanting to leave the safety of his arms:: I am surprised they have not. You are missed Luc, and I can not help but feel responsible.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he smiles and keeps holding her:: You're not responsible for your cousin's actions or mine... And from what I hear, the Dancers have done a good job of corrupting Lieutenant Riche in my absence.
<Miette> ::laughs:: Good. He needed it.
<Ron_SWEF> ::laughs with her, then finally lets go:: You should go. Laurie will be up waiting for you, and she needs her sleep too.
<Miette> ::sighs and nods:: We are leaving at first light. As soon as we return I will find you. ::kisses him again::
<Ron_SWEF> As soon as your cousin is taken care of... ::kisses her back:: Now go before I get ideas in my head about following you...
<Miette> ::laughs:: You have fields to tend these days. After all, someone has to grow the food around here.
<Ron_SWEF> ::gives her a roguish grin as he steps back:: That's me, Lucky Luc Loupe, Champion of the Cornfield...
<Miette> ::smiles:: And me.. the Lucky Lady. I will certainly need the luck for this one.
<Ron_SWEF> ::he smiles and takes the bone dice from around his neck, tossing them to her:: Then take mine...
<Ron_SWEF> ::wink:: I can do without luck for a few days...
<Miette> ::catches the dice and hangs them around her neck with his badge:: I will see you soon Luc.
<Ron_SWEF> ::nod:: Be safe, my lovely...
<Miette> ::nods:: As safe as I can. ::blows him a kiss and turns to walk back to her apartment::
<Ron_SWEF> ::Luc heads back inside, to see if he can reclaim his bed now that he's ready to use it::
<Ron_SWEF> <<<End Interlude>>>

I love weddings! Drinks all around!
Miette tosses around in her sleep, horrible dreams running through her head. When they are just too much to take anymore she wakes, screaming. Almost immediately a pair of arms wrap around her and pull her close. Luc's sitting in a chair next to her bed, having arrived some time after she fell asleep. Miette clings to him, sobbing.
He strokes her hair gently. "You're safe now, cherie, I'm here..."
Miette looks confused. "Where? What happened?" She reaches up to feel the bandage covering a couple of stitches on her neck. "Etienne.. the bolt.. that cut was small.. what is this?"
"Careful, cherie... The demon got inside you after Etienne was taken down, and it tried to finish what it had started..."
"Finish? Finish kidnapping me?"
Luc sighs. "No. It wanted you dead."
Miette shivers and touches her neck again. "Who?"
"The ghost that was terrorizing St. Yvesse, I remember hearing that Therese had been possessed by it as well..."
Miette nods carefully. "She was.. and Maddy.. but who did it use? Who stabbed me?"
Luc hesitates. "You did."
Miette blinks in confusion. "But, I could never. I remember nothing. Selena was there, and Nic. They would not leave. I screamed at them to leave. Nic.. did I hurt Nic?"
"No, you only tried to hurt yourself. It was a near thing, but they managed to get the knife away from you before you could cut the artery."
Miette smiles weakly. "I am lucky they did not go away.."
Luc squeezes her. "You have very good friends, cherie."
Miette frowns. "What if there are more of those things?"
"We don't know for sure, but Martin and Therese think there was only the one..."
Miette shivers. "It wanted me dead. If there are more, I endanger everyone just by being here.."
Luc squeezes her tighter. "Don't start thinking like that, ma belle, I would take great exception to it. Again, we have no way of confirming it, but Therese thinks that it was what was left of that Blood Taster after you released its soul..."
"So if I release another.. I can not stand the idea of bringing such a thing down on my friends.. and you.."
"Well, next time we will know what to except, and have ways of dealing with it quickly. Knowing that a priest can dismiss the corrupt spirit makes it much less of a threat."
Miette slips her arms around him and hugs him tightly. "But what if next time, it goes for you.."
Luc smiles. "Then knock me down, wrap amber around my neck, and call for a priest."
Miette shivers. "It is not funny Luc! I can not lose you."
"You won't, cherie. I have no intention of leaving you, and a hypothetical possession will not change that."
"It will if the thing kills you.."
"It won't, cherie. You and the others will not allow that to happen."
Miette sighs. "I wish I was so confident.. So weak and tired.." She lays back down again.
Luc kisses her forehead. "Of course you're tired, you've had a very stressful week. In fact, Martin had a long talk with Renardier, and got permission to give you three weeks leave..."
Miette nods and smiles weakly. "I think I could use it, though before the end I may be bored."
Luc nods. "You'll decide for yourself whether you will still see patients, but I strongly recommend you do nothing but rest for a few days. Your body, mind, and soul have been through a great deal lately..."
Miette nods. "You are correct of course.." She frowns. "How long have I been asleep?"
"All day, it's nearly midnight now."
Miette sits up again, trying to get out of bed. "Is someone caring for Laurie? What if something is after her?"
"Laurie and Therese are looking after each other, and I've been keeping an eye on them both. And vice versa..."
Miette sighs and lays back down again.
Lucky squeezes her hand. "With your permission, Miette, I'd like to stay with you the rest of the night. In case the dreams come back."
Miette nods and holds tightly to his hand. "Please.."
He bends down to kiss the top of her head. "I'd like to stay with you the rest of your life as well, if you don't mind..."
Miette blinks slowly, her over-stressed mind trying to process that one. "The rest...?"
Luc smiles. "Of your life, yes... Assuming you don't plan on dying too soon, of course."
Miette smiles. "No.. I do not plan to die.."
Luc smiles back. "Good."
"Luc.. did you just ask me what I think you asked me?"
Luc kisses her hand. "What do you think I asked you?"
"Did you mean you want to marry me?"
Luc gives her a rogueish wink. "If you can stomach the notion..."
Miette laughs. "I can, but the rest of my patrol will think I have taken leave of my senses in the face of such hardship."
Luc laughs with her. "Come now, they know you're daft enough to keep company with me, marrying me can't be that much more insane."
Miette raises an eyebrow. "You think? Trust me, they will all think I am crazy." She giggles.
Luc laughs. "Which is why I must marry you now, before you recover your senses."
"Now? I am hardly presentable.."
He laughs again. "Alright, I'll give you a day or two to get your rest while I find a priest willing to bless such a dangerous union. I'll also need to have a long talk with Lady Anne..."
Miette sighs and nods. "We will need her help if we do not want Jean-Marie to get out of bed and put a stop to the wedding."
Luc nods seriously. "Perhaps we can ask Anne to tie him to his bed that day."
Miette laughs.
The wedding day is five days later, on a bright and sunny morning. The ceremony is set up on the grass in front of the village hall, where a canopy has been set up in place of an altar. Father Sebastien and Luc await the bride, and pretty much the entire village and half the Patrol (especially the Bone Dancers) are in attendance. Miette walks slowly down the aisle on Jean-Marie's arm, smiling at Luc up front as the crowd watches with delight. She is resplendent in her wedding dress and veil of Vodacce lace (where Selena found that is unknown, but it looks lovely). Several women (especially the redheaded twins) are crying their eyes out. Jean-Marie still isn't thrilled, but he's at least trying to hide it today.
As they reach the front, Miette lets go of Jean-Marie's arm and moves to stand next to Luc who gives her a beaming smile. She smiles back at him a bit nervously, and Jean-Marie sits down next to Anne as Father Sebastien begins the wedding ceremony.
Father Sebastian breaks from Vaticine tradition enough to conduct the ceremony in Montaigne. When asked if he takes this woman in all the various conditions of life (sickness, health, etc) Luc answers yes without hesitation.
Father Sebastien then turns to Miette. "Do you, Miette Coralie Rois et Reines, take this man to be your husband before Theus, in all of life's joys and sorrows?"
Miette smiles and nods. "Yes"
Sebastien looks out at the crowd. "Are there any present this day, who know of any reason why this union should not take place? Speak now, or hereafter keep thy silence."
Anne squeezes her husband's hand, and a few of the Blue Mustaches plant hands over Bone Dancer mouths, but the end result is silence."
Sebastien says, "Then by the power and glory of Theus on high, let these two become one, husband and wife. I strongly suggest you kiss the bride."
Luc slowly lifts the veil, then follows Sebastien's advice with enthusiasm. He pulls Miette into a deep dip, kissing her like there's no tomorrow. Cheers and catcalls from the audience are heard.
Miette holds on to him and returns his kiss with equal enthusiasm.
Eventually, they have to come up for air. Luc simply sweeps her up in his arms and carries her down the aisle to the cheers, tears, and applause of the assembled.

This one is old.. forgot to post it..
This OOM was done right after Miette killed the little girl Bone Dancer
Miette sits in her clinic, updating her patient logs as Luc quietly watches over the patient and Laurie does her homework.
Nic enters the clinic, holding his new scythe like a walking stick.
Miette looks up and smiles as Nic walks in. "Just the man I wanted to see."
Nic smiles. "Really? I highly doubt that. He laughs a bit and notices Laurie working, lowering his voice to a whisper. "Whoops, sorry.."
Miette nods. "Really. I need to talk to you. But not here. Some things are not for smaller ears. Have you the time to walk with me?"
Nic nods. "Always. He smiles.
Miette closes her log book and gets up, looking over to Luc. He nods at her, and she walks out of the clinic and into the courtyard.
Nic steps outside with her. "Is everything alright?"
Miette sighs and nods. 'It is. I am haunted by the memory of that little girl though."
Nic frowns. "I told you what she said.."
Miette nods again. "I know. And I truly believe I freed her. What haunts me now is the question of how she got that way. And I doubt you missed the fact that Luc is sitting armed in my clinic. He is guarding my patient, just in case. Nic, do you know how the Blood Children are made?"
Nic frowns. "Yes.."
Miette sighs. "Tell me. She bit him Nic. To this point we have not dealt with a direct bite from a Blood Taster. I need to know, if you can tell me, what will that man be when he wakes up?"
Nic frowns again, shrugging. "I cannot say on the last question. The bites from the blood spawn have faded easily enough, perhaps that of their masters will as well. But as for how the tasters themselves came to be, that is another matter.."
Miette chews on her lip for a moment. "How do they come to be?"
Nic sighs, staying quiet for several moments. "I suspect they were all people once.. Given my own past, as well as that of your brother."
Miette nods. "Right.. do you remember what makes them into the things they become?"
Nic frowns. "Not exactly.. I have come to learn that I have blocked out most of my time spent with her majesty.. But from all I have learned since then, from the tasters themselves, various clues, and the words of the old chicken shaman.. It would appear to me that a deep level of corruption is required for such a transformation. And as such, I suspect her majesty herself must perform it."
Miette nods. "So the odds are good that my patient will not suddenly gather all the rats in Phenix the moment he wakes up."
Nic nods. "I think that is unlikely. He smiles a little. "Besides, even if it weren't for the corruption, I would suspect the same based soley on the fact that we aren't up to our ears in tasters.."
Miette shrugs. "Usually the bites are from the animals. What worried me this time is that the bite was from a Taster herself, rather than her pets."
Nic shrugs. "Just because it is the first time you have seen someone bitten by a taster doesn't mean it is the first time it has happened. Rechant often spoke of eating people afterall.."
Miette shivers. "Who he did not leave alive. She sighs. "It is nice to know I do not likely have one in my clinic. But now I am left to still wonder how such a small child comes in contact with such horrible corruption. My brother always was drawn to power. Him I understand.. but not the child.."
Nic frowns. "Children are not immune to such desires... And are often convinced of much that is not actually true.."
Miette sighs and nods. "Only one person can answer my questions for sure.. and he will not come to me."
Nic frowns again. "He will not answer them either.. Or at least not in the way you would like.."
Miette shrugs. "Perhaps not, but would it surprise you to hear that I miss him? Even if he will not tell me what I need to know.. I just want to see him again. It is far worse to have seen him, then lost him, than it is to have never seen him again.."
Nic frowns. "You have not seen him again.. Not the real him. That is locked deep inside, tortured, which you have not seen.."
"And to free him I must kill him.. "
Nic shrugs. "What is death in the play that is the giant nightmare? Perhaps the players are merely being pulled behind the curtain to perform again elsewhere.."
Miette raises an eyebrow. "I would much prefer that he perform again on this side of the curtain. You still can not remember how you overcame the corruption yourself?"
Nic frowns and stops walking, sudden realization hitting him as he remembers a dream from a couple of nights past, looking down at the ground. "I do.."
Miette stops and spins around to look at him. "How Nic?"
Nic frowns, not looking at her. "I... He..broke it.. He would not be controlled by her.."
"Who is he?"
Nic doesn't speak for several moments. "Me.. That which I am and that which I do not wish to be.."
Miette frowns. "I do not understand."
Nic drops his scythe and sits down quickly. "Inside there is something.. Different.. Dark.. Something which did not wish to be controlled by her majesty and thus broke her rules.."
Miette kneels in front of him. "So the dark part of Damien would need to break free from her control? Not likely.. She sighs. "Are you all right Nic?"
Nic looks up at her. "The darkness.. What I saw and feared would catch me in my nightmares.. The thing that kept me from sleeping.. It was myself.."
Miette lays a hand on his shoulder. "We all have some darkness.. some of us more than others. And these days, all of us more than we had before."
Nic shakes his head. "This is different.. It cannot be natural.. I cannot believe that.." He frowns.
"I am sorry Nic. In my concern for my brother I pushed you for answers that perhaps you were not ready to give.."
Nic sighs. "I must face what I am.. Your questions did not make that fact any more true than it was.. He looks back up at her. "I am sorry about Damien.. But I see no way to cure him unless his darkness is like mine.. Or unless you can free him.."
Miette frowns. "With my bolts.."
Nic nods. "Though given what I know, I would not wish the former on him.. Better to be freed, free to perform again on another stage. Instead of becoming like me.."
Miette sighs. "Perhaps.. but he is my brother."
Nic frowns. "Then you should wish it on him even less than I.. Though you do not fully know the fate which I speak of.."
"It is difficult to take your word for it when your logic tells me to kill my brother. Please understand Nic. I do not doubt you. I only find it hard to give up my hope, however irrational it might be."
Nic nods. "I do understand. I just do not wish to see you follow that hope to her majesty.. You are dealing with things here far greater than yourself.. Things you do not know and cannot deal with alone.."
Miette smiles at him. "Then I suppose it is good that I am not alone."
Nic smiles slightly. "I suppose. Perhaps..." He pauses.
"Perhaps what?"
Nic frowns. "I do not know if he will listen.. But if I told you of my fate, and you wished that for your brother over freedom behind the curtain. Perhaps I could trick his darkness into rebelling as mine did.."
Miette sighs and shrugs. "Can you tell me of your fate without too much pain?"
Nic frowns. "There is no pain.. Only shame.."
"Then tell me, please. But only if you truly want to."
Nic takes a deep breath. "When I used the dreaming opal. I saw myself.. Except it wasn't me, not the one you or I know. Something else, something dark, twisted.. I spoke with this darkness, and even battled with it. Only to lose and fail in defending the woman who visited me from the Dreaming Eye.."
Miette frowns. "What does that mean?"
Nic shakes his head. "I do not fully understand.. Yet. But this darkness has some level of control.. Do you remember the dogmen that attacked Phenix and Vergogne? The Laughing Ones?"
Miette nods. "Yes."
Nic frowns. "He calls them.. Commands them.."
Miette raises an eyebrow. "The dark part of you?"
Nic nods slowly, shaking a little as he thinks about what that means.
Miette says, "That could be useful.. if you could control them with your good side.. She shrugs. "So what you are telling me is that if my brother becomes like you, he will forever battle some dark half buried in his soul?"
Nic frowns. "Forever.." He pauses. "I do not know.. But I am haunted by the things I may have done, or may yet do, when he takes control.."
Miette nods. "But would you rather be dead?"
Nic sighs. "If not for my answers, yes. I would welcome another role, on another stage.. Besides, no one would miss me anyway. Except maybe you.. He laughs slightly. "I will not do so myself though. If I fall from this stage, it will be after getting my answers, and seeing the nightmare for what it is.."
Miette frowns. "I would miss you a great deal Nic. And thank you for your honesty. I wish I knew what my brother would want. I wish he could tell me.."
Nic frowns. "That would be ideal. However the puppet rules now in his stead, and I do not even know if it is possible to reach the true him inside.."
Miette nods and stands up. "You have given me much to think about Nic."
Nic nods and stands as well, picking his scythe back up from the ground. "I am sorry I could not give you the answers you wanted."
Miette shrugs and walks back toward the clinic. "You did tell me my patient will not wake up a Blood Taster. As for the rest.." She sighs. "The honest answer is always the best, whether it is the one I wish to hear, or not."
Nic nods and follows her. "Too true.. Oh." He stops her. "Would you not speak of what I have said, with anyone? I enjoy being a member of the patrol again.. I do not wish to be driven away because of him.."
Miette nods. "I would not tell anyone Nic. Regardless of your position in the patrol, I would not wish to see you shunned, or worse.."
Nic smiles. "Thank you. I know the difficulty of what I ask, given your various relationships in Bascone.."
Miette shrugs and smiles. "Protecting the secrets of a friend is never difficult."
Nic smiles and nods. "I wouldn't know.. I haven't had any friends to protect their secrets."
Miette shrugs. "You have me. Though I do not have any secrets at the moment."
Nic laughs. "Perhaps another time." He smiles.
Miette laughs and nods, walking toward the clinic again. "Perhaps."
