Vince and Riche's sparring match....
<Vincent> :: walks over to where Riche is practicing, having spent the past hour hunting away from camp::
<Riche> ::as he sees Vincent approach he salutes the Eisen with his swords:: Good morning. A pleasant day, is it not?
<Vincent> :: nods, saluting back, bringing his fist to his chest:: Riche: It is. :: looks up and around:: Perfect morning for some sparring. :: grins:: Are you ready? Or do you need some more time to prepare?
<Riche> ::Michel grins and shrugs a little I am prepared... ::he steps back and raises his sword and main-gauche into ready positions::
<Vincent> :: steps back as well, drawing his spear and dropping into a defensive stance:: Riche: As am I. Shall we begin then?
<Riche> ::nod:: Begin. ::he immediately begins a slow sideways circling, as if testing the ground::
<Vincent> :: turns in place, keeping an eye on Riche, but staying in his defensive stance::
<Riche> ::Michel smiles:: Are you waiting for summer, or for me to fall asleep?
<Vincent> :: shrugs:: Riche: Either one would be fine.
<Riche> ::Michel's sword flashes, aiming for the knuckles of one of Vincent's hands. He's really pretty fast::
<Vincent> :: slides backwards at the first sign of movement, swinging his spear in tight
arcs, in an attempt to cover himself, and drive Riche back::
<Riche> ::Michel steps back quickly to avoid the spear:: Now this is interesting,
you're actually the first spearman I've faced. Until recently, such weapons were
considered crude in Montaigne...
<Vincent> :: nods, stepping out of his defensive stance and idly twirling his spear around
himself:: Riche: Yes, I assume a weapon such as this would be a burden at those fancy
parties the Montaigne like to throw.
<Riche> Well actually, I do recall one party after the premiere of a certain Eisen
opera. The diva attended, and she wore her costume from the last act. I must say, a
woman that large with spear and breastplate makes a rather interesting spectacle at a
garden party... ::he darts forward to try and tag Vincent's belt::
<Vincent> :: steps back and spins his spear once again to try and cover himself, staying
on the defensive to get a feel for Riche's fighting style::
<Riche> ::Michel pulls back and goes back into the circling, looking for an
opening in Vincent's spear-whirls:: So, is Halden still sulking this morning?
<Vincent> :: drops back into his earlier stance and nods, turning once more to keep an eye on Riche:: Riche: As far as I know. I don't think he saw the value in your 'serpent's list'.
<Riche> And did you? ::he slashes quickly at Vincent's shoulder::
<Vincent> :: doesn't back away this time, instead sidesteps and brings the blunt end of his
spear around to try and strike at Riche's back:: As a matter of fact, yes. Had I not, this
sparring match would have been considerably less light hearted. :: grins::
<Riche> ::Michel's rapier slices open Vincent's sleeve, but he discovers to his
chagrin that daggers are not good at parrying spear butts. He stumbles away as the blow
connects::
<Vincent> :: presses his temporary advantage, stepping forward and dropping low,
swinging his spear to try and knock Riche's legs out from under him::
<Riche> ::Michel hops over it in an undignified fashion, and unintentionally
knocks Vincent on the top of his head with the hilt of his main-gauche:: Err, sorry about
that...
<Vincent> :: shakes his head and slides back, holding his spear defensively once more,
but grins:: Riche: I assume you weren't expecting that?
<Riche> Not particularly, no. I must confess, you appear to have the advantage in
the open terrain...
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: Which is why I prefer the spear out in the open. :: pats the hilt
of his sword:: Would you prefer I use the broadsword? :: grins::
<Riche> ::Michel raises the tips of his weapons a little, giving Vincent an opening.
It's probably because he's not paying attention:: Oh no, I'd be foolish to think you're the
only spearman I'll come across, so best that I learn.
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: Are you sure? :: before he finishes his sentence he slides
forward a step, thrusting with his spear, letting it extend to it's full length to reach Riche::
<Riche> ::in a flash, Michel's sword and dagger cross to catch the spear-thrust and
guide it away. He spins, and before Vincent realizes what's going on Michel has a dagger
at his throat:: Very sure.
<Vincent> :: grins, looking down at the blade:: Riche: Nice trick. I'll have to remember
it.
<Riche> ::he grins and steps back:: Good thrust, however, if I hadn't asked for it it
might have gotten me...
<Vincent> :: nods, pulling his spear back:: Riche: Shall we continue? Or do you have
somewhere to be?
<Riche> ::glances at the sun:: I think we can afford a few more minutes. If you
want to switch to sword, I would be amenable.
<Vincent> :: brings his spear up again:: Riche: I think I'll stick to the spear, it deserves a
chance to make good after missing with that thrust. :: grins::
<Riche> ::smile:: Oh, have I insulted its honor? That is dracheneisen, is it not?
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: Ja.
<Riche> ::he brings his weapons to the ready, slowly circling and waiting for
Vincent to make his move::
<Vincent> :: turns in place once more, spinning his spear around himself again,
increasing speed every so often as he watches Riche:: Riche: So, what do you think of the
patrol? Really. :: suddenly stops swinging his spear and throws it straight at Riche,
drawing his broadsword and rushing forward behind it, bringing the blade around to
strike hard at Riche's rapier, if all that is possible, lol::
<Riche> ::Michel is too busy ducking the spear to answer, and when he sees the
sword swinging at him he turns the duck into a roll, coming back up on his feet behind
Vincent somewhat ungracefully:: That's it, you'll have to suffer now. You got my
clothes dirty! ::he's kidding, mostly::
<Vincent> :: laughs, spinning to strike at Riche once more, being rather aggressive now
that he is using his broadsword, a complete from when he was using the spear::
<Riche> ::Michel steps back as the broadsword swings by, then lunges forward to
cut Vincent's belt in two:: I think the Wolfhounds will be a great unit, if they can get
their rough spots polished out...
<Vincent> :: attempts to lean out of the way of the lunge, trying to let the rapier pass him,
to bring the pommel of his broadsword down hard on Riche's wrist::
<Riche> ::the belt still comes apart, but Michel twists his arm so that both he and
Vincent end up with their right arms tangled together. He grins, and the dagger is at
Vincent's throat again:: A good tactic, but I'm better equipped for in close...
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: So it would seem. :: decides to end the match with a bit of fun
and tries to bring his freehand up to move Riche's dagger away from his throat quickly,
before bringing his head back and then forward to headbutt him sharply, but not too
strongly::
<Riche> ::Michel pulls the dagger away to avoid Vincent cutting himself on it, but
he doesn't see the headbutt coming. There is a clonking sound, and he steps back,
rubbing his forehead:: Ouch, now that was utterly Eisen...
<Vincent> :: steps back and grins:: Riche: I am nothing if not a product of my homeland.
:: sheathes his broadsword and moves to retrieve his spear::
<Riche> ::Michel nods and sheaths his weapons carefully:: Well, I should recover
from it in an hour or two... It was most illuminating, thank you.
<Vincent> :: nods, picking up his spear and returning it to it's place across his back,
turning back to Riche and saluting once more:: Riche: The lesson, the fight is not over,
until it's over. :: grins:: Well, when you're dealing with an Eisen at least.
<Riche> And when dealing with an Eisen, the fight's not over until he's dead?
<Vincent> :: shrugs:: Riche: Or until his enemy is. Either way works for us. :: grins
again:: I agree about the patrol by the way. I see great potential in them. I just hope
their leader returns with some sense, if you will pardon my saying that.
<Riche> ::Michel nods:: Du Vraise is a good sort, he just takes certain things too
seriously. A few weeks with the Duke's Own should give him time to relax and examine
himself...
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: I'm sure you're right. And I hope it is so. Because with the
right guidance, the Tenth could be a great patrol, perhaps even one of the best.
<Riche> ::nod:: And it'll happen just in time for you to transfer back to the Snow
Foxes, probably...
<Vincent> :: laughs and nods:: Riche: With my luck. I transferred to the Tenth
temporarily because of their reputation for attracting odd creatures. But lately all they,
we, have been attracting is angry looks. :: laughs again::
<Riche> ::Michel shakes his head:: Two to three weeks away from town should
give everyone time to move on to fresher gossip. After that, I'm sure you'll be able to
make your own reputation again.
<Vincent> :: shrugs:: Riche: My reputation wasn't the reason I wanted the transfer. I
simply wanted the chance to encounter some of the strange creatures the Tenth tended to
draw.
<Riche> ::nod:: And when the Snow Foxes didn't get the border posting Gerac
was hoping for, you decided to go where you could get your chance.
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: For a while. :: looks around to make sure noone is around to
hear:: Besides, after we didn't get the border posting, the Corporal was in something of a
bad mood. But that should blow over before I get back to them.
<Riche> ::Michel sighs and nods:: I hope it does... It should have occurred to him
that there will eventually be more border villages being built, and irritating his fellow
officers will not make his chances of getting one any better.
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: I personally think the Foxes would be better suited for a
different job than watching the border villages.
<Riche> Such as?
<Vincent> :: shrugs:: Riche: Well with their, our, tracking and field experience, I think
we might be better as something of a scouting patrol, exploring further beyond La Motte's
borders. We would not do as well as some of the other patrols, staying in one village. ::
shrugs:: But that is just my opinion.
<Riche> And it sounds rather reasonable to me... I've heard that you Foxes did
excellent work this winter, rescuing homeless refugees from the jaws of winter...
<Vincent> :: smiles:: Riche: We do our best. As anyone does.
<Riche> ::nod:: Very true... ::sniff:: I can smell vengeance on the wind, that must
be our breakfast...
<Vincent> :: laughs and nods:: Riche: Well, that was a good match. And it, along with
the way you lead the group last night, has earned my respect. :: bows and salutes once
more::
<Riche> ::Michel laughs:: I'm no leader... As soon as this assignment is over, I
will happily go back to walking my beat in Bascone, teasing the housewives and spoiling
their children.
<Riche> But thank you all the same...
<Vincent> :: nods:: Riche: Bitte. :: turns to head back to camp::
