Madeline Bright - The VERY Romantic Getaway... with swords

It was mid-afternoon on the following day of the gypsy party when Martin rode up to the First Patrol's headquarters. He'd sent a note asking Madeline to arrange to have the next morning off if possible and to pack a bedroll. Madeline didn't know what he had planned but looked forward to whatever it was, just the same.

Tying his horse to the post out front, Martin knocked at the front door. It was a moment before a familiar face opened the door and greeted him with a smile. Her hair was tied back in her usual riding bun, and her outfit consisting of riding skirts and a snug fitting blouse was pristine as usual.

"Yes?" she asked politely, "Can I help you?"

Martin pretended to consult a list, "Pardon me, I am looking for a 'Miss Beautiful White-Clad Sword Goddess', is there anyone here by that name?"

Madeline smiled widely, "Why yes! That would be me! How did you know? Please do come in... "

She stepped back to allow him entrance as he smiled at her and walked in, "I was given a very good description. So, should I call you 'Miss Sword-Goddess'? Or is the entire title your surname?"

Madeline stepped forward after closing the door to put her arms up around his neck, drawing him close to her, "That would be Miss Sword-Goddess to you...."

Her mouth found his for a warm welcoming kiss.

"My my, Miss Sword-Goddess," Martin said softly as he slipped his arms around her waist, "you certainly know how to greet travelling salesmen."

"Only ones as handsome as you." She gently stepped out if his embrace and looked down at her bag on the floor, "Would you mind helping me with this?"

He bent down to lift the pack and sling it over one shoulder, "Ahhh, now we get down to it..." he winked, "So, are you ready to go?"

She nodded patting her swordbelt, "Ready and waiting..."

He opened the door again and stepped outside, "Good, we've got a bit of a ride ahead of us. I managed to find a nicely-secluded place, and since it's east of Reines, the only company we're likely to get has a sense of humor."

Madeline raised her eyebrows and smiled playfully at him as she followed him out the door, "My my... if I didn't know better... I'd swear you wanted me all to yourself..."

He grinned as he tied the pack behind Mystery's saddle, then offered to help her mount, "Well actually, I do want you all to myself."

She smiled seductively at him as she moved to mount her horse, "I wouldn't have it any other way."

"Well, I think you're going to like this..." he said. He mounted his horse then lead the way out of town.

They rode for the better part of an hour, first toward Reines and then down a barely-visible trail into the woods. When the trail finally ended they found themselves in a secluded clearing, in the center of which was a charming little cottage. The house looked like it had been abandoned for a while, but it was obvious that before that it was well-loved. It still had flowerbeds beneath the windows and a well near an overgrown vegetable garden surrounded by several kinds of fruit trees.

Martin smiled as the cottage came into view and looked to see Madeline's reaction. She raised her eyebrows and smiled in delight.

"Oh how lovely! Who's cabin is this?"

"No one's now," he said with a shake of his head, "The original owners passed away a few months before the Madness, their graves are underneath that apple tree there. From the looks of the headstones, they must have had a long and happy life here together."

He pointed at a pair of short stones underneath a tree. She nodded in their direction and dismounted her horse, tying her to a nearby tree.

"How did you know about this? It's amazing no one else has moved in here."

"Honestly, it was one of the Blue Mustaches that told me about it. He said that he had considered claiming it himself, but that it would be wasted on a bachelor."

She nodded as she walked closer and looked around.

"It's lovely... very cozy... and quaint..." she smiled, "I wouldn't mind having a house like this some day... away from the hustle of the town..."

"So would I, " he nodded, "I grew up on a small farm, actually. It was nothing as pretty as this, but it was secluded and full of love."

"It sounds as though you had a good upbringing... " Madeline said as together they unloaded their stuff from their horses and brought it to the front door, "of course your manner says that about you anyway."

She winked at him and he gave a little laugh as they brought thier stuff inside. The interior of the cottage was a little dusty and could have used some touch-up cleaning, but it was obvious that someone came here to sweep it out on a regular basis. The cottage had three rooms and a modest loft above.

"Well, that was a combination of good parents and a great deal of elocution lessons at the Musketeer Academy."

Madeline grinned at him slyly, "Musketeer eh? Well, I can't wait to see how good you are against me...."

After laying her stuff down, she turned and whipped out her sword and sliced the tip through the air a little, performing just one of her more flashy moves. It was obvious she was very well trained. Martin quickly rose to her challenge and drew his sword, draping his cloak over his left arm in the typical Torres fashion.

"Alright, but let's take this outside..." and he stepped back through the doorway into the afternoon sun.

They waited just long enough to affix blunted safety tips to their rapiers (it would have been a shame for such a nice day to end in blood) before they begin. At first the two tested each other, eyes watching each movement as they circled each other and gauged their opponents. Then in silent agreement they began to fight, sword slashing as the pair of them danced around each other in the wild and energetic swirl that was the Torres school. Their capes whirled through the air like flamenco skirts as they spun, swords meeting with ringing tones that echoed through the forest around them.

At first it seemed that Martin's reach gave him the advantage, but soon they both realized that Madeline's grace and speed were a match for it. Neither of them manage to touch the other, though they were both having a grand time trying. Madeline wiped a little sweat from her brow as a few tendrils of hair fell from her updo. She was putting up an easy, but valiant effort as she was very impressed at his method of fighting. In fact, she quickly realized it was a bit of a turn on, watching him come at her like that.

The grin never leaving his face,
Martin carefully guided the match in among the trees at the edge of the clearing. Once they were in the narrower confines, his stance changed and his feet straightened out. Suddenly Madeline found herself on the defensive as his cloak snapped and twisted, trying to grab her blade and wrap around it. Her eyes widened as she realized that this was another style entirely, very like Torres but with an entirely different purpose.

He gave her a wink uttering the word, "Robertson..."

She nodded, her smile never faltering, "Impressive..."

Not fighting the smile that had taken over her lips entirely, Madeline switched styles as well. Her cloak arm tucked behind her as a song started to play in her head, guiding her steps and the movements of her sword. She attacked in a dance, her blade darting and slashing at him. Martin's eyes watched carefully as he gave away from the assault. He was not just watching her sword, however, his cheeks were warm as he realized just how appealing her body looked when it was pushing itself to the limit. He sidestepped a lunge and swirled his cloak again, binding her sword for just a moment. Instead of taking the opportunity to score a touch, however, he leaned in to give her a quick kiss.

She pushed away from him, a playful look on her face as she breathed heavily, "I hope you don't try and distract all your opponents with that move."

He grinned at her, "Only the ones as lovely as you..."

She shook her finger at him and tilted her head, "Ah ah ahhhh.... no flattery... that won't work here..."

And with that she lunged at him again in her eagerness to continue. He laughed and spun away, his cape swirling behind him.

"Is it flattery if it's still true?" He decided to get daring and continued to spin around her, smacking her across the rump with the flat of his sword.

Madeline squealed and turned to face him, "Of course it is! You are trying to seduce your opponent into submission!"

Martin winked and slashed playfully at her midsection, following it with a cape-swirl to distract her, "Is it working?"

"No!" she lied and laughed in spite of herself.

He kept stepping and swirling his cloak, dancing around her and forcing her to change direction constantly. They were both starting to get a little dizzy when suddenly he stepped in, wrapping his cape-arm around her to pull her body close to his. His mouth found hers in a deep and passionate kiss as his sword parried hers to the side. Her knees melted in his embrace as his mouth caresses hers. Her sword fell to the ground as she brings her arms up and around his neck, pressing her frame against him in a soft moan. He let go of his sword, holding her tightly as he kept the kiss going. His heart felt like it was about to pound a hole in his chest by the time he finally let go of her lips. He smiled down at her.

"Well, I got your sword away from you..."

"Cheater..."

"Are you complaining..?

She shook her head, "Not at all..."

Overcome with the emotion and the heat
of the moment, she rose again to her tip toes and kissed him more deeply. His brain almost shut down entirely from the heat of that kiss. There was purpose behind her lips as he looked longingly down at her.

"Let's go inside..." she breathed and without another word he let go of her long enough to pick up their swords and put his arm around her shoulders to take her inside.

Madeline Bright - Breaking up is hard to do...

Madeline sat red-eyed and gloomy in the dim lighting of her new room in the convent, new home of the First Patrol. She was glad not to have met anyone on the way in, for her misery would be most evident on her face and would impose many questions she did not want to have to answer right now. She had just had a conversation with Martin upon leaving the pub, earlier and it wasn’t pleasant. In fact, it would be something that she would need much time to get over.

She didn’t know why she was as upset as she was right now. She was so angry at Martin after he admitted being in love with Selena, that she didn’t think she would ever be able to look him in the face again without wanting to leave yet another hand-print in his cheek. But the fact remained that her heart was breaking yet again.

Only a short time ago, she had been in the room where Verre had been murdered, a murder she didn’t remember committing and somehow Martin found her, grieving over him and what she knew she had done to that innocent man. Martin refused to leave her and stayed with her to comfort her, holding her gently while she cried. This meant a lot to her and even though she hated him right now for betraying her with Selena Byn`Hahli, her feelings for him had certainly not died. She still loved him very much.

It didn’t take long for them to talk about what had happened between them. It was obvious he still cared about her very much. He wouldn’t be here now if he didn’t. And though she could see that he genuinely was a torn man, that didn’t help her. She didn’t want to get involved with him again, especially if he hadn’t made up his mind about either of them.

Things took an unexpected change however, the next thing she knew, she was in his arms and kissing him deeply. A kiss that he initiated. The fire between them was as real as it had ever been and for a fleeting moment it was as if nothing was wrong. They were the only two people in the world and she realized just how deeply she had missed him. Reality didn’t take long to grab hold, however and Madeline tore away from him and left the room. Yet, it left her wondering, wondering if she still had a chance. She didn’t dare get her hopes up, but there was something in that kiss that made her wonder. And she began to let that wonder grow over the next few weeks.

It wasn’t until she saw him in Nic’s tavern, that she knew things weren’t going to change The small bubble of hope she had inflated exploded with a pop as she caught sight of Martin and Selena sitting together and holding hands. This had been too much and she had to leave. She had been hoping to see him here tonight and get him alone to talk about maybe giving things another go if he could promise to stay away from Selena, but his answer was in front of her three tables away.

She left quickly and quietly.

He met her as she was about to get on her horse and asked if they could talk in private. She tried to remain impassive as he asked to speak with her but when he told her about his new situation, her heart ached again. He told her that his patrol would be getting assigned to roaming duty and would be gone for weeks at a time. He felt it wouldn’t be fair that she hold out for him, especially since he was going to be working so closely with Selena.

It was the fairest thing to do, but it still hurt when the time came to say goodbye. She scorned herself for actually letting part of herself get her hopes up and right now, she felt just as miserable as she did when she first found out about him and Selena.

Taking a deep breath, Madeline wiped her eyed with the tear-soaked handkerchief. Martin was right, it was better this way. At least now she could move on with her life instead of wondering if things would change between them. At least now she could stop wondering what he was doing and if he was with her again.

At least now she had all the time in the world to get over him...
