It was evening.
They had all just finished their latest job of returning Viktor back to his family and were now in between jobs. Many of them went off to spend their time as they pleased and Ulrich was no exception. He had decided to spend his time in the local tavern, almost looking forward to another night of drinking alone. He was sitting by himself at a small table in the corner, a large mug of Eisen beer in his hand, leaning back in his seat as he eyed the (very few) other patrons in the bar. As he took a sip of his beer, he noticed a familiar female enter the bar. He smiled.
Nadja had been feeling the need for a little fun for herself after such an active job they had just performed. She decided to start the night off with a few drinks at the local tavern before seeing what else the evening would bring for her. She entered the bar and lookrf around disappointedly finding that it is nearly empty. The disappointment is evident on her face as she headed to the bar anyway and ordered a drink.
Maybe it will pick up in a little while, she thought as she looked around.
Ulrich had just brought his mug to his lips and was in the middle of taking a sip when he saw Nadja walk in. His eyebrows rose in surprise, and he quickly finishes, setting the mug down. He raised a hand, trying to catch her eye. As her head turned slowly, searchingly, she spied him and smiled. She paid for her drink and took it down to his table.
He grinned slightly as she walked over.
"Guten abend, fraulein." He said, "Please, join me. The company here has been dreadful so far."
Nadja watched as he stared disapprovingly at the empty chair across from him. She nodded and pulled back the chair to sit. "Thank you... when did you get here?"
He glanced down at his mug, "Oh, not too long ago, I suppose. What brings you to a place like this? Surely there are more reputable locales."
She gave a slight shrug, "I just wandered in for a drink...."
There came about half a moments awkward silence as she thought of something to talk about. They had all been so busy as a group, they had hardly any time to socialize and get to know who they worked with. Nadja found it a little difficult to find something to say. Her thoughts didn't fail her, however, as she smiled mischeiviously at him, "too bad we had to render your guard friend unconscious.... you didn't get to say goodbye properly."
He smirked, "I'll get over it, and I'm sure she will as well once she realizes who I really was." he raised an eyebrow, "Why does it matter to you, anyway?"
His tone was more teasing rather than defensive and she was quick to pick up on it. She continued to smile as she looked at him, "Just making conversation I guess."
His eyes narrowed in thought as he took another drink. He then smiled, "So what brought you into Herr Heyerdahl's employ, Nadja?"
"I was intrigued by what he offered." she replied after taking a sip of her drink, "I'm always out to try something new. My people travelled a lot and constantly found new ways to occupy themselves so I guess you could say I'm used to it... Old habits die hard I guess...."
He chuckled, "So you move from place to place all on your own, looking for excitement and adventure? Like a carefree wind..."
Her eyes danced in the dim lighting, "Yeah, that's me... That's the Tibesti really..." she eyed him curiously, "What about you? What brings you to this town to work for Erik?"
He sat back in his chair and shook his head slowly, "I'm not exactly sure, to be honest. I've spent most of the last five years on my own. Maybe I got tired of all the wilderness and monsters, and decided I needed a change of scenery... which, I must admit, has certainly improved."
His last few words made her smile even wider as he grinned across the table at her. She felt a slight blush in her cheeks as took a little sip of her drink.
"Likewise..." inclining her head, "I admit I never expected to be working with such an interesting group such as ours.. Our jobs so far have certainly made things exciting...."
He nodded in agreement, "Ja, who would have thought rescuing hostages from a large number of hostile, well-armed guards could be so dangerous?"
She laughed a little, "Dangerous for them..."
"Indeed," he replied, "I'm glad that I am not on the other end of those claws of yours, fraulein."
She smirked and glanced down at her wrists, in which her weapons were now safely secured under the cuffs of her loosely hanging blouse.
"Ahh yes, my secret weapons... they do take my victims by surprise..." she took another sip of her drink, "I guess no one would expect a lady to carry such a vicious weapon..."
He raised and eyebrow again, "Perhaps that's why you do carry it. Unfortunately for most men, they tend to underestimate the capabilities of the fairer sex."
She nodded, "Yes, that works to my advantage most times."
Again came the half moment of awkward silence as she toyed with the rim of her glass. Something he had said a few moments before made her very curious to know more and so sought to ask him.
"You mentioned you fought
monsters... what was that like? What did they look like?"
He frowned. The silence fell again and it was a long time before he spoke.
"Most of them would be difficult to describe because I don't know what your worst nightmares look like. There have been some who looked almost human and they were often the hardest to kill." his expression suddenly hardened, "But every single one of them deserved it and the ones I haven't found yet will share their fate when I do...."
There was something about his words that held a finality to it. Her eyes softened at the intensity of his words and she knew there must be some reason why he felt so strongly.
"They must have been unbearable." she said softly, "I'm sorry, if I... forgive me... stirred up some unpleasant ghosts... you seemed to have made it your life's quest to do them all in."
He let out a breath and then drained the rest of his beer, setting it down on the table a bit harder than he normally would, "That's putting it lightly, fraulein. And there's no need for you to apologize; you didn't know. And it's probably good that I talk about it. My behavior of the last five years has turned me into something my sister would have hated..."
He paused, blinking in surprise as he realized he just mentioned his sister. He suddenly he looked away muttering, "Damn it..."
Nadja drew in a slow breath, letting out just as easily. Her heart suddenly felt sympathy for him as he spoke of his sister in the past tense. It wasn't hard to figure out why he was so bitter. She reached over and laid her hand on his, giving it a little squeeze, "It's alright... I understand... and I'm sure she would too..."
He let out a short, quiet laugh, "She wouldn't even be fifteen yet, I doubt she'd understand." he shook his head, "I'm sorry I steered our conversation towards such a depressing topic. I try to keep things like this to myself, all it does is make others uncomfortable."
He smiled up at her, "I do appreciate your sympathy, though."
She shook her head, "I was the one
who brought up the monsters, Ulrich... I shouldn't have been so nosy...." she quickly realized where her hand was and withdrew it, though not too quickly. "Anyway, it's good to get things off your chest. It doesn't do to dwell on your pain... you have to release it... I take it some sort of monster took her, then?"
He looked almost disappointed when she removed her hand and nodded in response to her question, "I was sixteen, she was nine. Our parents had both died during the war, so it was up to me to look after her. I went out hunting in the Black Forest -- our home wasn't far from it -- one night and she followed me.
"I could have brought her back home but I wanted to prove to everyone else that there was nothing to fear in the Black Forest, that the stories about it were just that, stories. And then something took her. I've been hunting monsters since then, trying to avenge her."
Nadja looked at him oddly. "You mean she just disappeared...? Or.... "
Her voice trailed off to imply the obvious. He nodded in response to the latter. She winced at the horrible thoughts that crossed her mind. Her hand instinctivly found his again.
"Oh... that's awful..."
Again silence followed. She could see in his features that he carried with him much pain yet, he seemed willing to tell her about it and felt their setting needed to change. She looked around as she finished the last of her drink.
"Listen, you want to get out of here?" she asked, "This is hardly the place for a conversation like this.."
She gave his hand a pat before withdrawing it again as she leaned back in her chair. He looked up and glanced around, frowning. Finally he nodded.
"Good idea. I think some fresh air would do us both good." He stood and offered his hand to her, smiling. She nodded and came to her feet, slipping her hand in his.
"Let's go then, it's a lovely night... we could take a walk by the river..."
His smile widened and he squeezes her hand gently, "I like the sound of that."
As they stepped outside, the moonlight fell upon them and the surrounding street. It cast a warm glow on everything it touched and the still night was welcoming as they set off down the street toward the river. He looked down at her.
"Thank you for listening, Nadja..." he said softly.
She looked up to meet his eyes.
"You're welcome." she said, "I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time...."
