Tam Sneed - Journal Entry - Episode 002

Recovery and Recollection

"What happened? Where am I?". The mist enveloped him, as he stumbled around. His chest was the source of his pain, but he saw nothing to indicate why it hurt. Everything felt wet and sticky to him. His clothes, his skin, his hair. Everything. "OK, what's going on? Is this some sort of joke?" He heard some muffled voices, and turned to find the source, but the mist kept him from seeing anything. "This isn't funny!". He stumbled around some more and fell. 'At least the ground was firm', he thought. Tam tried to get up, but couldn't. Something was holding him down. He tried and tried, but nothing was working. His body was becoming numb and his eyes grew heavy. Soon he was unable to stay awake any longer.

Just then, his body felt light and began to float upwards. Breathing was even more difficult though, as he floated up. His body thrashed and shook, as it fought for air to breathe. What seemed like hours passed and he was able to breathe normally again. The pain in his chest was subsiding and the mist was fading away to a darkness. Soon, he was floating free in darkness, wondering where he was and why he was feeling so strangely.

**********

A week had passed and a dim light began to fill his vision. Everything around him was a blur of color and light. His focus was slowing returning, and he began to make out shapes. The muffle sounds were returning too. 'What has happened to me? Did they catch me and put me into stasis? Was I killed and coming into some sort of heaven, or hell?'. The questions didn't stop there. His mind was racing with possibilities. All the while, his vision was retruning and the shapes he saw took on further definition. Soon he realized where he was, and a short spurt of panic filled him. He calmed down when he realized that he felt fine, and he had all of his fingers.

Tam looked around at the dimly lit room, and wondered where he was. He saw a single Mon Cal, looking at some charts and data on the console near the tank. That was a good enough hint for him to believe he was on Mon Calamari again. The Mon Cal looked over to him and smiled briefly, before saying something into a console. Moments later, several people, who looked like doctors, entered and the lighting was made brighter. They looked him over and checked the data readings for the tank, before activating the extraction sequence.

He felt his body grow heavier, as the fluid drained from the tank slowly. His body was being lifted out, and put gently onto a hover-bed. Attendants moved around him and secured him to the bed, before pushing him out of the tank chamber. Minutes later, he was in a room and hooked up to a few monitors so to be inspected by a doctor for any possible problems.

Suddenly Tam felt he couldn't breathe again, and coughed and coughed. Fluid forced its way out of his lungs and into a container, held by an attendant. After several minutes, he was able to breathe normally again, but his body still felt week and heavy. He tried to talk, but his voice crackled and the words wouldn't form.

"Don't try to talk. You've been in the tank for just under a week, and need to build up your strength.", said the attendant. He moved the container to the side and began checking the display of one of the monitors. "Everything looks good, but the doctor will have to be the one to decide for sure." He turned and walked out of the room, leaving Tam alone.

"Mr. Sneed. I hear that you are doing well. I must say that if it weren't for the care you got while away, you wouldn't be awake right now. You wouldn't even be alive. Doctor Skulonn did a bang up job with what little he had.", said the doctor as he walked in. "You owe a lot to that Quarren."

Tam looked confused at the doctor's words. He never met a Quarren after leaving Mon Calamari. Maybe it was when he got back. That had to be it.

The doctor looks down at him and realized that Tam didn't know what he was talking about. "Perhaps I should have him tell you about it. He knows more about what happened than I ever will." He checked the monitors and made a few adjustments. "Overall, you look to be in tip-top shape, other than your strength, but that will come back in time. I'll send in a therapist to help you work on that.". He turned to leave, "If you need anything, just hit the green button on your left."

Minutes after the doctor left, Tam felt tired and drifted off to sleep.

**********

Tam sat in his bed, after eating some food. Boredom was beginning to set in. He had his strength back, but the doctor still wanted him to stay for more observation. All of his pleading and arguing did him no good. Several times, he was very close to sneaking out, but had no clothes to wear, and didn't know where Maverick was. All he could do at the moment was rest, and he was getting tired of doing that.

He remembered what Seldon Wade had told him, about what had happened back on Harjio Te. However, he also mentioned that he had a spot where he didn't know what happened, either, due tohis own injuries. Seldon introduced him to Skulonn, and they had quite the conversation. A lot began to make sense, and to much of his relief, Maverick was fine, for the most part.

Seldon was very grateful for what the crew had done for him, and had convinced his backers to provide assistance for repairs and modifications to Maverick. Tam told him what he would like. First on the list was a med bay. Skulonn suggested a bacta tank chamber, and Tam agreed. Another item on Tam's list was additions of several modifications to the hold doors and some redundant systems put in for back-ups. Seldon took the list to his backers, and returned, saying that they would do it, but they couldn't do them and pay for the job they did. Tam understood and told Seldon to fix Maverick up. The others would understand.

From what Skulonn had told him, everyone did above and beyond what was expected of them. Tam began to think of each crew member and how he had met them, and what they had been through together. So far, they were the best crew he had ever had. Each one had special qualities, and their own characteristics that set them apart. Then he thought of the two who were left behind. Soren and Naal.

Soren had proven to be quite frustrating and annoying to him, but he did have his uses. Naal was, well, she just was. Tam knew that if they had returned, they would have left anyway. There was no reason for them to stay with Maverick and the crew. He was happy that they were gone, because the two of them was a source for quite a few conflicts among the crew. In his mind, it was good riddance.

Tam was a changed man, and the crew had earned his trust more than once over. They may not recognize the change in him, at first, but in time, they may come to like him. That was the most he could possibly expect, perhaps. He never made a bone about being honest with the crew. He spoke his mind, not giving a second thought to how it would affect them. He would still do this, but maybe be a bit more tactful in his choice of words. Afterall, they deserved some consideration.

The doctor entered the room and smiled. "Mr. Sneed. I have some good news. You can leave this facility and return to your ship. However, I want you to exercise regularly. At least once a day."

Tam nodded. "I appreciate it, Doc. I'll be sure to keep it in mind." He slipped out of bed and pulled out some of the clothes that Seldon had bought him. They fit pretty well, for the most part, and he didn't mind the loose fit. As he began to dress, he listened to what else the doctoer had to say.

"You know the hazards of blaster, and in your business, you should. I understand Dr. Skulonn will be joining your crew. That's a good thing for you, bad for me. I've been looking for someone of his talents for a while. If you're anywhere near here, please have him drop in."

He nodded to the doctor. "Sure will. Never know when that could be, in our business.", he said with a grin. "So you think Skulonn is a top notch doctor, eh?"

The doctor smiled again. "Most definitely. He certainly knows what he's doing. I'd be happy to take him off your hands, if you don't need him."

"Doctor, I'm hoping he will get bored on my ship, but when the time comes, I'll need him." Tam pulled on his boots and looked to see if there was anything else he would be forgetting.

"Completely understandable. I just don't want someone else snatching him up, if he becomes available." The doctor went to the door. "If you need anything else, feel free to contact me. Take care of yourself."

Tam nodded once more, and followed the doctor out of the room. "Thanks for fixing me up, Doc. I won't forget you." He walked past the doctor and towards the lift. It was time to get back to Maverick.
