Nandi and Arani's Last Thoughts
Nandi walked back to her cabin after her talk with Tam, shaking her head and still running it over in her mind. Somehow she'd never actually imagined it was so important to him that she stay. Things sure had changed in the time she'd been here. Arriving at the door to her cabin, she keyed in the code and stepped inside, sitting down at her terminal.
After thinking for a few minutes, she typed up a brief and polite note to Jykt, explaining that she appreciated his offer, but felt that she really had found her place with the crew of the Maverick, and that she had no desire to join him in his boring safety. She also did invite him to contact them if he had need of their services again. She sent the message, then started on another one:
Dear Dad,
You'll never believe what happened to me, and for Sith's sake don't tell Mom. We got into a big gunfight over payment someone wanted to stiff us on. It was so scary, and I even got shot, but it made me realize I can handle myself out here. I even just turned down another, safer job. I talked to my captain and he completely forgives me for hiding on his ship. He said he wants me to stay, and that with time I could be great out here. He keeps checking to see if I've been keeping in touch though, because he says family is important. Something in the way he said it makes me wonder if he's short on that himself, so I'm lucky I guess. Send Mom my love, and tell her I'm doing well here, but you can leave out all the parts that would make her want to find us and drag me home. You know how she is. I'll write again soon, and I promise to be careful.

After hitting the send button, Nandi laid on her bed and stared at the ceiling with a smile, happy to have found her little niche in the universe.
* * * * *
Meanwhile, in another part of the ship, Arani had come back from shopping and laid down for a nap. Disturbing images flashed through her mind, one right after the other.
Creating negative feelings with friends.
A tribunal.
An exile.
A life of smuggling and drug use.
Slowly frying her own brain.
An old ship, and a new friend who helped to fix it.
Losing her friend.
Losing her freedom.
Losing the rest of her mind as a drugged slave.
Arani woke up screaming, the pictures still flashing in her mind's eye as her physical eyes scanned the room and slowly realized where she was, and that she was safe. Her eyes settled on her personal things, scattered around, which Tam had saved for her while she was gone. Tam.. Now she could remember him. The good, the bad.. the safety of his ship, which had become home to her. Home. A special word to an exile. Arani rolled over, closed her eyes, and drifted back to sleep.
