Re: Plot Logs
The moment the hatch was shut, they both reverted to Chinese. “You’re not coming with me this time, Han,” Ping stated firmly.
“We are family, Ping, we go together or we don’t go.” Han retorted, actually raising her voice to normal levels for a change.
“Just because it’s time to split up, that doesn’t mean we aren’t family anymore. You’re still my big sister, and I still love you. I just think that you will be happier on Fenghuang.”
“And why do you think that?” Han asked, folding her arms.
“Two words – Victor Shirley.” Ping nodded as Han turned bright red. “I don’t know where you’re going with this, but even the monkey can tell you two have it bad for each other. You don’t need to throw that away just because I want to settle down and keep an eye on Nathan.”
Han swallowed. “I do like him very much, but I do not think I know what love is…”
“You’ll figure it out, sister, you remember our parents much better than I do. Besides, the crew needs a good bodyguard, with all the fighting they seem to get into.”
“In our last fight I was in the cargo hold, trying to recover from whacking my head on a crate.”
Ping grinned. “I spent the whole time hiding down here in my room, to keep from getting shot. My point is, you have skills that they need. I’m not particularly needed here, but Nathan and I have been discussing business plans.”
“But is it a good idea to get off now, when Nathan is still recovering from being shot? It was pure luck we found a doctor so quickly.”
“I will take good care of him. If anything happens, there are doctors and hospitals aplenty on Paquin, and I have enough money to pay for them. Paquin’s a nice place, as far as I’ve heard.”
Han sighed and hugged him tightly. “i’m going to miss you, little brother…”
Ping smiled. “We’ll stay in touch, the Cortex is good for that. And the next time you’re headed this way, you can come visit. I figure I’ll rent a cottage or something similar for Nathan and myself, somewhere out of the way so he can recover in peace and quiet. Once he’s better, we’ll look at our options for business.”
“just don’t go getting in trouble, you won’t have a sister to bail you out anymore…”
He laughed and tweaked her nose playfully. “And don’t you two go getting married without at least inviting me first…”
Han blushed again. “brother…”

Ma’i climbed down the ladder slowly, tired out. She and Jed had just moved roughly four hundred crates, offloading forty percent of their load of miscellaneous merchandise and replacing it with new and theoretically different miscellaneous merchandise. Thankfully Jed had let her operate the crane rather than do the lugging herself, but she was still beat solid. She was sweaty and in need of a bath, but right now her bed was calling louder. She was halfway to the bed and halfway undressed when something caught her eye, lying on her pillow. “Darn monkey,” she sighed as she sat down and grabbed at what she assumed was an empty snack wrapper. Its weight made her take another look, it was in fact a fancy wrapped chocolate, of a brand that Ma’i was pretty sure nobody on the ship had bought. She looked up at the ceiling, the magnetic clip that was now holding the ventilation grill closed was still in place. Ma’i stared at the chocolate, confused. Then she looked up. “Zack…?”

A woman was stretched out in a hammock, looking out at the stars through her window. Some would call her beautiful, with her flashing blue eyes and untamed mane of curly brown hair, but most would feel that ‘striking’ would be a better word. She wore comfortably-worn leather, attractive to the eye though not chosen to be so. A solidly-oversized handgun was tucked under one leg like a favorite stuffed animal. Her ruminations were silent, until the door opened.
The crewman paused as the knife sunk into the doorframe next to his head. He swallowed hard as she fixed him with a pointed stare, then lifted his hand to knock on the door. Her glare relented. “Err Captain, there’s a wave for you. It’s from Hardy,” he stammered out. “Your brother’s dead.”
Mary Jones sat up with a sigh, putting the pistol into its holster before climbing out of the hammock. “I always knew that god-shouting idiot would come to a bad end… Alright then, let’s go see how it happened…”
