New Website vs. Current Website

Thanks Heather, but I have the whole Corel Graphics Suite, which includes Corel Draw, and I know it can't do what I have in mind.

However, I will look for a site that comes close to what I want to do. I actually have a few ideas, so there could be more than one example.

I don't doubt anyone else's ability at all. I just know that what I have in mind will probably require the ability to create something using a Flash or that type of program.

Interactive means that you can grab an object from the webpage and spin it or move it around. I know this could be easy with the right programs, but I first need the programs and then need to learn them.

I have several programs that I can use to create the basic stuff I need, but it's the heart of the new website that requires what I don't have... yet.

Here's one of my ideas:

Remember those little thumbnail collage pics I created? Well, those would be dimmed and lined up on a page (top, bottom, side, or where ever looks best).
When the mouse cursor goes across one, it sorta lights up (isn't dim anymore).
The person can then click and drag the image to a spot on the same page called a "launch pad" and that page will be displayed.
The images would still be in place as the new page comes up behind them, making the images available to select.
There could be an image for every page, or images could come and go depending on the page you "launch".

Thats just one of my ideas, which to me seems more unique than some of the others.

For that level of interactivity on a website I would suggest checking out the Shockwave Flash generator, it's not cheap though, you might could pull that off with just PHP coding but I'm not sure, it is a very versatile coding language but I'm not sure what it's limitations are, it might not be powerful enough.

ahh, ::nods:: makes sense. Well I can't wait to see the new site once you finish with it, by the sounds of it it's going to be pretty nice.

Well, as for alternatives for the Flash in your design idea, I -believe- there is a Javascript for fading in a page (not sure).

And it's easy to do mouseover fade-in images with Javascript, such as this: http://elvaan.net/crossing-borders/

As for the drag-and-drop links, you could only do that with Flash.

Exactly my thoughts too, Aris. emoticon

I figured that since I want to do the drag-drop page links, I might as well do it all in Flash... well most of it at least.

I know Macromedia Flash program is not cheap. I'd probably get their suite of programs for the whole thing, which is even more dollars. I think I can afford it, but haven't had the time to look into the total cost and my budget yet. emoticon emoticon

Not to worry. It will get done... one of these years. emoticon

Thanks for all of the input! I really appreciate it a lot. emoticon

New Website vs. Current Website

OK, UPDATE!!!

I finally got my new computer up and running, minus a few things that don't affect what this topic is about.

Now all I have to do is get the time to work on the website.

Since it was last discussed, lots of different things have been shifting around in my mind. The layout will be different than what I originally thought, I think. The reason for this is how our games are evolving and the possible addition of even more games.

Once I get the basic layout figured out and implemented, I might offer to do more than add a splash page link you some of the game sites. What I'm saying is that I could create a subsite for each game.

I will definitely keep in mind the idea of archives. Some games will end, while new ones begin, so I think it would be fun to keep a very basic archive of the games that end. Archive might not be the best word to use. It might be more like an overview of what took place in the game with the characters and NPCs. Something like a one page story to give an idea of what the game was really about and not what was originally intended. Although games are intended to go one way, game play sometimes shifts things around and the game ends up being different. Ohhh, never mind. I'm just rambling on now, without a clue what I want to actually say.

There is no short story really. The thing is, I have the computer and the programs I need (most of them at least), and should be starting my work on the NEW website soon.

I still welcome ideas or suggestions if anyone has any.

New Forums Look

No, you are at the right board.

Yes, I made changes to the forums board.

I did very little as far as changes go. Colors, top layout, removal of the extra colored graphics, and that's about it.

Of course, there are still room for improvements, so feel free to suggest them.

The current website has the new logo on it. I'll be making up smaller versions of the logo, and incorporating it into a banner for those who want a banner or button link on their sites. That will probably be done in the next couple weeks, and I'll let you know when it's ready.

I'm slowly learning how to use the new programs I have, and am liking them very much. I can't wait to get going on the rest of the graphics for the new site.

I was wondering what was going on, Rick. I thought I was losing my mind.

While I love the change in colours, the dark blue might be a little too dark against the highlighting on the forum titles when your mouse hovers over it. I think perhaps just a few shades lighter might be better. emoticon

Just my opinion of course. Other than that, the fact that the forum is coloured is great. A very nice change from the plain grey that it used to be. :P

OK, I fixed that. I changed the mouse-over color changes.

As for the colors I chose, I wanted it to be as close to the current SWEF site as possible, but after trying that color, I found it too dark for the forums. I think this is a "happy medium". Don't you think?

The new website will have different color schemes and then the forums will change again to match.
