Geography

Okay, I have some of the solar system's geography ironed out, but I'd like everyone's assistance with the rest. Here's what I have:

Mercury - Inhabited by an enigmatic alien race known as Mercurials. They seem to either be made of metal or wear amazingly-articulated metal armor, but they are the most humanlike in appearance of all of the solar races. They are also the most distant, preferring to not get involved and politely rebuff most social contact.

Venus - Open

Earth - Most of Earth is ruled by Her Majesty's Britannic Empire. The Tribal Union, India, and Russia have become first-tier members, putting them on the same footing legally as the British and almost the same socially. Eastern Asia has fallen under the sphere of the Shogunate, but the majority of their population has emigrated to Mars by now. France is still a Britsh subject, and while it has been somewhat rehabilitated there is still some resentment that will never be rooted out. Most of the rest of the world is a client state of one kind or another, but there might be a few exceptions. Open for ideas.

The Moon - Luna Britannica is wholly and completely British. It serves as the prime shipyard and home port for Her Majesty's Navy, though the Admiralty still maintains their headquarters in England. Luna has become very green in the last century, as forests have been planted across its surface in order to lessen the need for Terran timbers for shipbuilding. There are also several 'liberty towns' on Luna, wild hedonistic places where enlisted men spend their shore leave.

Mars - Mars and its two moons belongs to the Shogunate. Since Mars was seized from Britain in the mid-19th century, the planet has become home to millions upon millions of Asian immigrants. Cultural divisions still exist, but there is a strong desire to stand together against the 'Westerners'.

Asteroid Belt - There is an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter in the real world. In this game, it still exists but it consists of fewer and larger rocks, many of which have been settled by the British Empire and other groups, much like the Caribbean. Feel free to make up your own.

Jupiter - Open

Saturn - The moons (archipelago) of Saturn have become home to what's left of the Americans. They're spread out all over the place, and may even share territory with an alien species. At any rate, the United Saturn Alliance is generally believed to be a bunch of semi-anarchistic ne'er-do-wells, the thorn in everyone's sides and the grit in everyone's gears. They're not openly at war with anyone, but a great many pirate ships sail from Saturn. Yankee trading vessels handle a lot of the cargo-running in the outer part of the solar system, and their crews have a reputation for being brilliant lunatics for the risks they often take.

Uranus - Open

Neptune - Open

Pluto - Open

There has been very little successful exploration beyond Pluto's orbit as no ship can carry enough supplies to even think of going far out of the system, but a few vessels have tried. Those who have come back report vast stretches of nothingness and wild aetheric winds that rip even steel sails to shreds in minutes.

I was thinking of putting two or three more alien races in the solar system besides the Mercurials, suggestions about these and other ideas about the geography of things are welcome. Hope this sparks some ideas for you!

Venus - home to a race of physically beautiful creatures knows as the Veniaans. Their world is like an eden where everything is near perfection. However not is all as it seems. They are power hungry and thirst for knowledge to add to their perfection and they will do just about anything to get it.

What do you think? Came up with that off the top of my head... maybe if it doesn't work.. it can certainly fuel some of the more brilliant flames of thought

That's a good one, but I think I'll blatantly steal your ideas and incorporate them into what I'm doing with the Mercurials. emoticon

How about Venus as some kind of water planet? Granted, this may come to mind because Venus sounds a lot like Venice...

Hmm, this could be interesting. Want to spin this one some more, come up with some details?

Hmm... There was an episode of Voyager where there was a water planet... nothing but water... no land at all.. that could be Venus..

As for the mermaids, how about having them like Sirens (I think that's right).. those sea creatures that lure sailors to their deaths...

How's that?

Like sirens how, do they hate humans and try to drown them? Is their singing some kind of weapon?

Here's a thought. What if the Italians have settled on Venus, building floating cities similar to Venice and living in partnership with the merfolk?

Another thought. At some point in the game I want to start hinting that there is more to aether than is understood. Perhaps these merfolk are rumored to have mysterious powers but due to their seclusion underwater no one is really sure?

Hmm, yeah...that sounds good...but maybe scratch on the hating and killing thing unless you really like it.

I was thinking the singing could result in hypnosis of some kind and would sound like a kind of whale song only more melodious and lovely. Sometimes (depending on the person)it could make some people entranced with it's beautiful tones.

That way, "luring folk to the death with thier song" would just be some exaggerated story and people stay away because of it and the possible dangers??

Did I make more sense that time? Or did I just repeat myself... emoticon

That makes more sense, yeah, I like the concept better now. More thoughts, how human/inhuman should we make these merfolk? Are they the classic human torso/piscine tail combination, or something else? I'm mainly asking because of the possibility of merfolk characters.

Venus - Expanded Upon?

The Merpeople idea is terrific. I think that they could be fish-like with a humanoid upper body, but not Human. Perhaps they have scaled skin all over, and gills to breathe from. Maybe large eyes to see better underwater.

The "Siren" idea may be a good thing. Perhaps the "siren song" is produced technologically, and it's intention isn't actually to attract "sailors" to their deaths, but has another purpose. The attraction aspect could be merely a byproduct of the technology that they did not account for, and killing those who come to close to them is a way of protecting themselves. The main purpose could be to produce a protective shielding from the elements of the planet's surface, and the Aether Winds that batter the atmosphere. Or something along those lines.

Perhaps beneath the surface of the planet are large oceans of a water-like liquid that they live and breathe in. The probably eat other lesser species of fish and plant life that thrive in the liquid layer of the planet.

Also, they may have ships of some sort. Mostly to drive off any would be invaders or attackers. These ships could also have that protective shielding technology that sends out that unintentional "siren", which actually could work against them. This protective shield bubble could be filled with the same liquid they live in so that they can operate their ship without need of special suits or breathing devices.

Of course this is all just ideas that could possibly get trashed, but it's something to think about maybe.
