The Transaction

It was after dark before the group finally began to settle down on the small snow covered island amongst the sea of ice. Henrik, now wearing both of his gloves again, was still sitting in front of the fire, which was still going strong, and musing about the origin of those claw marks. Saphryn sat nearby, watching the fire. He glanced over at her for a moment, wanting to say something, but then remembered that the young woman wouldn't have understood him anyway. Henrik sighed and looked back into the fire, frowning.

He could hear Jack over near the snow, still examining the claw marks and scratching at the ice with his hands, which sounded rather comical from over by the fire. Henrik sighed and looked over at him. "I doubt you're going to see much out there now, Professor," he said. "Give it a rest and wait for the Sun to come back up.

The Professor looked over to the fire for a moment then back down to the marks, tilting his head.

Henrik rolled his eyes and looked at Saphryn. "And I thought I was obsessed with my work..."

She looked confused by Henrik's words, but followed his gaze over to Jack and laughed softly.

Henrik frowned again at her look. "Right, I forgot about that," he mumbled. "I haven't made much of an effort to help either of us understand each other, have I?" He sighed as she just gave him another confused look, and laid a hand on her arm, patting it gently. "Wait here," he told her. He stood up and trudged over to Jack, watching him for a moment.

Jack looked up as Henrik approached, flexing his wrist to make his bracer glow with its green light. "Yes?"

Henrik took a breath. "I was wondering if you could help me with something, Professor..."

Jack stood and wiped the snow from his coat. "Oh?" he asked.

The Vendel looked back toward Saphryn. "Yes...I was wondering if you could help me talk to her and tell her that I think it would be better if we ended this whole 'husband and wife' thing," he finally said. "I think I've made it obvious that I'm not very happy about it, and I'd rather she didn't have to be stuck with someone who didn't want her..."

Jack nodded. "I see," he said. "Well, fetch her then. And make sure she has a blanket." He looked back down to the marks.

That made Henrik frowns. "You wouldn't rather sit down at the fire?" he wondered, and looked back. "Though I suppose it is a bit more private over here..."

"Quite," Jack replied with a nod. He held up his bracer, looking closely at the marks.

Henrik nodded. "Just a moment," he said before turning and walking back to the fire. He crouched down next to Saphryn and smiled at her, indicating to her that she should follow him. He grabbed a blanket and waited for her to stand up, gently wrapping the blanket around her when she did. They walked back over to Jack, and stood there for a moment before Henrik finally cleared his throat to get Jack's attention.

Jack looked up again and quickly stood, bowing to Saphryn and greeting her in her language. She smiled while answering, and Henrik looked back and forth as they exchanged pleasantries, shaking his head. When Jack turned to face Henrik, clearly waiting for him to say something, he blinked.

"What?" he said. "Do you want me to say what I have to say and you'll translate it?"

The Professor nodded. "How else am I supposed to know what to tell her?" he asked.

Henrik sighed. "How about what I already said to you?" He shook his head. "Alright, alright. Give me a moment." He remained quiet for a moment, trying to think of how to say this. "Tell her that I was wrong to accept her as my wife," he finally said. "I'm not ready to take care of someone else, especially someone who knows nothing about our world. It's nothing about her, she's been nothing but kind to me this entire time, I just don't think it would be right for me to keep this going any longer. She shouldn't have to be with someone who doesn't want her.

"And I apologize if I've treated her poorly at all during this time," he continued. "I haven't meant to hurt her, and I still don't. She doesn't deserve my anger; this wasn't her fault."

Jack took it all in and made sure he had it right before turning to Saphryn to translate it for her. She remained silent while Jack translated for her, then finally answered once he was finished, facing Henrik as she spoke.

"She understands, but asks what is to become of her now," Jack translated, turning back to Henrik.

"Well, we can't leave her here, obviously," Henrik replied. "And just because she isn't my wife, that doesn't mean she can't stay with us. Maybe she can come back to Théah with us...by then she'll probably know at least enough Avalon to get by, and she'd be able to make a new life for herself there."

Jack translated that listened to her answer. "She says she would like to remain with us, but for that she must be joined with someone here. Otherwise she is bound by some word I can't make out, to return to her people alone."

The Vendel stared at Jack. "What? What in the Abyss kind of society does she come from?!" Jack raised an eyebrow, wisely deciding not to translate that, and Henrik shook his head. "Alright, so what should we do?" he asked. He watched as Jack and Saphryn started conversing again, Saphryn motioning to Henrik a few times, which made him frown. "What? What is she saying?"

"It seems all you need to do is either give or sell that talisman to someone," Jack said. "She says that if you do not want her she would prefer to not be a burden, she does however have one request."

One of Henrik's eyebrows rose. "And that is?" he inquired.

Jack listened to Saphryn again and laughed at her statement. "Anyone but the pirate," he translated.

That made Henrik laugh as well, and he grinned at Saphryn. "Not to worry, he's at the very bottom of the list," he told her. He paused in thought. "Well, I was thinking maybe you could take the talisman," he said to Jack. "You can communicate with her, and I know you won't try to take advantage of her or anything..."

Jack nodded and turned to start translate before thinking over what was said. He paused mid-sentence and turned back to Henrik. "Me?!" he exclaimed.

Henrik shrugged. "You're the most logical choice, Professor," he reasoned. "Why? Is there a problem?"

Jack was speechless for several moments. "Well.. Not exactly," he said, looking back to the fire.

"If you're talking about Damita," Henrik said, "you two aren't married. As far as any of us can tell, you're not even a couple. She just clings to you because you were the only one who'd shown her any kindness in a long time."

Jack continued to look back towards the fire, frowning a bit. "Very possible."

"The only thing that worries me is how Damita would react to it," Henrik continued. "She doesn't seem like the type of person who would get angry at Saphryn, but..."

"I don't think she would," Jack replied, shaking his head.

"So, what do you say, Professor?" Henrik asked. He reached underneath the layers he was buried beneath and took off the talisman, holding it out for Jack.

Jack sighed and turned to Saphryn, translating the conversation for her but omitting certain parts. She smiled and nodded at Henrik, answering, and Jack looked back to Henrik, a bit surprised. "She agrees."

Henrik smiled. "She's a smart girl, then."

Jack just stood there, looking a bit shocked by the situation, while Saphryn took the talisman from Henrik and put it around Jack's neck. Henrik laughed again. "Make it more obvious, why don't you?" he teased the girl. Jack looked down at the talisman and then back to Henrik, and Saphryn laughed, giving Jack a hug, making Henrik smirk. "Well, aren't you going to say anything, Professor?" he asked.

Jack let the glow of his bracer wink out. "I think we should all get back to the fire and get some sleep," he said. He turned and walked back towards the fire.

Henrik frowned and looked over at Saphryn, who smiled and nodded to Henrik before following after Jack. He shrugged and followed her. "She never hugged me," he muttered good-naturedly.
