posticon Slaughter House Five - Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

It's set in the 20th century. It intertwines the story of a guy named Billy Pilgrim through different time periods, most notably his experience in World War II and his relationships with his family.

Seems this Billy guy really lost it when he was in World War II. I just started it, and I'm only 45 pages in, but so far, seems like he had some really ****ed up **** happen to him in the second World War. Now that its around 23 years later, he signed a 3 book contract with some publisher and insists on writing about what he remembers from Dresden.

So he gets drunk and calls up some of his old war buddies. He meets with a couple and tries to get an idea of what they remember. Apparantly, Billy Pilgrim was an assistant a priest in the military, and didn't actually seem much battle. In fact he was sent back over there just as the last German strike took place. Seems like he lucked out, but something happened to him that I don't know about yet.

Later on it talks about him and his family. Eventually in the future he has a son and a daugher. Son gets ****ed around, goes to vietnam, the daughter dies.

Kinda hard to follow his train of thought sometimes, Vonnegut that is. He writes the story from the future, past and present at the same time.

Then the Billy guy, (who eventually had the kids), he's all ****ed up about writing this book. He starts writing letters to a newspaper about some experiences he had with another alien race. Apparantly these aliens took him to their home, which I can't spell or pronounce, shared with him the mysteries of time and space, and since they could see 4th dimensionally, it was easy for them to explain.

Then his family thinks he's lost his mind, which doesn't seem far from the truth..

Thats all for now, I can't wait to read more. It's really ****ing interesting.

I'm actually excited that you're reading it. Can't wait to hear what you say about the rest of it. It's seriously one of the best books ever written.
Next on your Vonnegut list really should be Goodbye Blue Monday or Breakfast of Champions. Or Goodbye Mother Night, but only if you're ready for something pretty serious in tone.

it's cool that you like that kind of dark, unspecific yet totally directed at ****ing somebody over kind of literature. (if that makes sense)

have you ever read any Tom Wolfe? The dude that did Electric Kool-aid Acid Test

AKA Satire

You should read some Wolfe. That old man knows how to take you on a trip. Electric Kool-Aid is about this dude that is one of the test subjects for acid in the 60s. He steals a bunch of it, starts the Rainbow gang, which is a bunch of hippies that drive around in a painted bus, meet up with the Hell's Angels, introduce them to acid, they become best friends, and somewhere there's a moral. I think I lost it with the drugs. Very reminescent of Hunter S. Thompson and his life. Heheh.
