My Recomends
"A Game of Thrones" by George R R Martin.
Probably one of my all time favorite books/series. His writing style to me, is almost par to none. None of the characters are black and white, everyone is a shade of grey. He also doesn't protect his characters, but enjoys killing off the people you come to enjoy =) (that really isn't a spoiler). His use of magic in a medieval like europe setting is really great, it's not used like any other cliche' fantasy magic.
"The Gunslinger" by Stephen King.
Another great book leading into a spectactular series, dark horror/fantasy. He uses refrences from almost all of his other novels in this magnum opus. Try the first book, "Gunslinger" it's very short, he wrote the series over a period of about 35 years, with all his other works in between. The main protaganist is a very heavily influenced by "The man with no name" series starring clint eastwood, infact if you imagine him AS clint, you wouldn't be very far off. =)

Re: My Recomends
the gunslinger
imagine taking LOTR, the good the bad and the ugly and john wayne set in a post-post-apocalyptic setting. throw in some quantum physics, and some really colorful companions (Oy!), and you've got the gunslinger. He doesn't just reference his earlier (and not so early) works in the series, he entertwines the stories. Even the two books he did with Peter Straub (The Talisman, Black House - both REALLY good books) are mixed up in it.
The bad thing about it all is, he took so ****ing long to finish the **** that he lost the thread somewhere, and mixed up his let's-make-this-a-work-of-art with let's-sell-some-copies-ane-pay-the-bills. or maybe he just rushed it, i dunno, but the last two books were a serious dissappointment to me. Still worth reading though.
