The Collecting Of Objects
I'm not positive this is the right forum for this, if not and you guys move it then np...
First, is there a link anywhere that gives suggestions on all the avenues one might check into as far as finding these objects? While browsing the collections I couldn't help be blasted with the realization a lot of these items aren't that difficult to get a hold of, obviously. I'm 45 y/o and I've actually owned that little clock at one time, my dad used that same sort of comb, my grandfather had the shoe horn from that period of time, I bet if I asked, my packrat mother probably would have the Life issue, and I know for a fact she has those same style scissors because she always griped at me for swiping them for school art projects! so it occurred to me that garage sales might be a pretty good location to pick up a nice starter collection for practically nothing at all. I've seen the older cameras at GS's a number of times too now that I think of it. Especially garage sales held by older people who would be cleaning out the attic and closets and footlockers of stuff that isn't quite vintage or antique era but is so outdated it's unusable these days.
Other than that, and eBay which I have no idea how to use, what are some other ways and means for the starter collecter?
Also - it's been awhile since I've seen TLR so memory isn't bringing up the way the Vault looked. Are there any screenshots of all the objects, including the vault itself in case of a desire to recreate the vault for showcase purposes?
EDIT: Oh, and if this isn't considered cheating - I saw a thread somewhere where the prop guy from TLR posted here - is there a way to just ask him if he can supply a list of the actual objects' brand names, dates, etc. so collectors could get the actual objects or replicas, that is? Seems like it would be tons easier than trying to figure out what specific items are (like the comb thread ;p) Maybe?
Thanks!
oops, downtime notice got me on this one, so if it double posts, apologies!

Re: The Collecting Of Objects
You are in for a long education process.
You may think a lot of these objects would be easy to find, but you will be surprised. Go to your mother, grandmother, etc, and ask them to produce the magazine, scissors, or any of the other items and you will find that they no longer have them or don’t know where to look for them. I know my grandparents had a magnifying glass like the one in the series, but where did it go? I know my father had the lighter, but where did it go?
We have pretty good screen caps of the objects in the vault. Most of them were made by Ghinius.
Writers and prop makers are not willing to give much specific information about the objects other than what can be seen in the show for fear that they will spoil future plot developments. However, we have accumulated so much information that there is very little left for them to contribute. Surprisingly, few people who worked on the show took much note of what the props were actually like. I would be very surprised if Peter Krause could pick out the scissors in a line-up. I doubt any noncollector could tell you that the TV is a Motorola 17T13 or that the Radio is a Grundig 88U.
