yep. that's why I did a practice key. I used the entire shaft of the schlage key, but it came out too long. You definitely need to cut some off. Go back and look at my picture more closely. My key was too long, so the notches were too far down the key.

Print out the show key until the head matches the same size as your own's and that should then give you the exact proportion.

great great find Spike !
But I think it is not a 612a only for the reason all 612a's have four grooves cut vertically on the Niessen side...this key has only three grooves....probally a 610 or 611.
just my 2 cents for what it is worth.
