I think he is saying quite the opposite: to pursuit for "seemingly" mundane goal such a way shows determination. Not many people are going that far with their hobby. It is a honorable personality-treat emoticon

Spike, are you saying Dispaminite and I are mentally irregular?

Enlightened, not irregular. The objects are archetypal.

What it shows is that there is meaning in the miniseries the event and the objects that somehow connects with some innate mental structure.

It’s sort of like Dean Hamer’s God gene, but even more obscure and primordial. It is unexplored territory.

Actually, I think I can even make an argument.

The fifties were a time when people were trying on new shapes and different types of functionality. That is why Cadillacs got fins and marquees started looking like grills.

These were not people trying to be deep as was often the case in the sixties and seventies. Nor were they trying to be outrageous as was often the case in the seventies and eighties. They weren’t trying to create new forms, they were trying to find the right forms. They weren’t trying to design a pair of scissors or a television that was new or different. They were trying to design them to be appealing. They were reaching for their feelings, not overextending them. This was the golden age of science fiction when people dreamed uninhibitedly of building robots and exploring space. This was a time when exploring space meant fighting monsters and rescuing pretty alien women in miniskirts.

The ideas and props for this miniseries come from that era. They seem to be the perfection of everything that era stood for. That is why The Lost Room is so appealing—at least to people who are in touch with their archetypes. It is a cornucopia of archetypal forms.

To seek the objects and study the event is to seek ones inner nature. It is a quest for inner truth. And in so being, it is a quest for all truth. It is the thing Eddie Jessup was pursuing in Altered States.

I don’t mean that The Lost Room is an extrapolation of the fifties. If that were the case, it would feature Cadillacs with even bigger fins and the women would be wearing no clothing at all. Rather, it is a perfection of that mindset. It is the thing they were after without knowing it. Yet, by building on objects and forms from the fifties it is better able to pick up where the fifties left off.

Actually, the realization of miniskirts and the free sex of the sixties and seventies was an extrapolation of the fifties. They were not a perfection of the mindset, but a perverse extension of the obvious trappings. After that, came a bizarre medley of faux depth and outrageous flamboyance.

The objects and ideas of The Lost Room are the true extension of the golden age.
