Karma and my new job
I've been out of work for almost 6 months and Sunday I was going to go to Pittsburgh for a comic book convention, but I changed my mind at the last minute when I realized I really shouldn't be spending the money on a hotel room, gas, etc.
Monday I got two calls and today I received two different offers! There was even a brief bidding war but then I accepeted the one that's about 10 minutes from my house. I start next Monday as a Web Progammer building sites for an initiative to prevent child abuse.
The karmic part is that if I'd known I would've gone to the con but then I wouldn't have been home to get those two calls on Monday and things might've gone differently.

Re: Karma and my new job
Excellent news! I may have myself a new job but if how these people conduct themselves with information and directions I am doubtful it will last. Besides, being a Mall Cop seems a little out of my league. Hell, I don't even get a little scooter or anything. And, I don't think I will be getting involved in any scuffles with only a can of Mace to protect myself.

Re: Karma and my new job
Great news Paul. You’ll be back to printing cigarette packs and pens in no time at all (sorry, my imagination is a tad limited).
Todd, being a security guard is really cool. I did it for years. Try to get one of the jobs where you work at night when no one is around. It is really fun to have an entire mall, office building, plant, etc to roam around in when no one is there. It is time to reflect.

Re: Karma and my new job
I do like the idea of working at night. But, I am a factory worker at the core and the jobs that are stand around types tend to grate on me. I've always been that go, go, go, type when I work. But then again, if Kevin James and Seth Rogen can make it look funny-cool I suppose it is worth a shot. As long as it isn't a gun shot.

Re: Karma and my new job
I hope it goes well for you Todd. These past 6 months have been pretty unbearable for me. Maybe you should carry the Pen, just in case.

Re: Karma and my new job
Can't believe what is told to me. 24 to 48 hours to get results from drug screening. No results yet!!! And then I still have to be fingerprinted for this security job. Jumping through a lot of hoops for a part time job. And my so-called maybe boss has the personality of a rock.
Maybe I should try and get in at the local telemarketing place. This is looking a lot like a snipe hunt.

Re: Karma and my new job
When I had my resume active on Monster, 90% of the calls I got were snipe hunts and some hadn't even bothered to read my resume to see exactly what skills I had. They're jobs were to get as many resumes as possible in the database. I even had one offer from a major corporation that was contigent on them winning the contract. I suspect what they were actually doing was tying up anyone in the area who might be qualified so they wouldn't get scooped up by a legitimate outfit.
It's a sad fact that in this day, employers, if they're hiring at all, can be as picky as they want with all the applicants out there. They're looking for any reason at all to hire that person instead of this one.
Believe me, I feel for your brother. I jumped through so many hoops for the past six months that I could probably get a job as a dolphin at Sea World.
