H1N1

BE AFRAID!

This is what happened the last time there was a pandemic of H1N1 similar to this strain:

1918 Flu

The virus was mild at first, but it became more virulent as it spread.

With modern methods, it takes 4 to 5 months to generate a vaccine. If everyone practices good flu etiquette, we can buy time for the W.H.O. to generate it. We can’t stop the flu from spreading, but we can slow it down.

I urge everyone to practice good flu etiquette:

1. If you feel sick, stay home.
2. Wash and sterilize your hands often.
3. If you use a public computer, sterilize the keyboard with disinfectant wipes.
4. Avoid physical contact of any sort.
5. Avoid travel.
6. Avoid eating prepared food.
7. Avoid touching your face.

Damn and just as I was planning a year of sewage farm bare knuckle naked mass orgy fevered pig wrestling to ease global warming. emoticon

Seriously though I think if it does all go pear shaped the 3rd world will be toast rather than us. In Mexico they hand out free masks, here in the UK our government is mailing us safety instructions, yeah like more junk mail will help. They promised the mail shot two days ago, we still haven't got it Mr Brown!!! Knowing our luck a damn febrile postman will sneeze all over it. Wouldn't be surprised if it just reads "Don't Panic!"

It’s already here in Seattle. I can’t believe how fast it came. Just yesterday, someone told me not to worry because it isn’t even here yet. At the rate it is spreading, it will reach carrying capacity in two weeks.

Re: H1N1

I'm right near Heathrow, it's 10 minutes away and a good percentage of the town work there, Most of the industry around here in one form or another either use or supply the airport. Then there's the public transport systems linked to it and taxi cabs. There's just no hiding from it. I'm hoping my seasonal flu jab will knock it on its head, but failing that I'm putting my trust in my GP and the NHS to get us through it, or it mutates into a milder strain. That's the other issue, how can you tell the difference, there's already spring colds, hayfever and bugs doing the rounds, how the hell do we know it's not already passed through or here mixed in with the rest. It's not like it's going to introduce itself with flags and whistles. Silly really you could be waiting with your Tamiflu in hand and take it totally at the wrong time in panic. Plus the over use of these drugs can turn the virus into a bullet proof mutant strain. We need a vaccine or a miracle. I still remember after surviving acute pneumonia being told by my doctor to avoid anyone with a cough. Near on impossible task, they all came out of the bloody woodwork to come find me.

Re: H1N1

I would hate to get the flu. Missing work just isn’t an option for me.

However, that isn’t my greatest concern. This strain is like a pinball with 7 billion chances to hit the jackpot. While it is bouncing around in one of the third world countries (as you observed) it will certainly mutate many times. The question is: into what?

It sort of caught us flat-footed. Practically everyone here gets flu shots every winter. As it happens, not one single person has been inoculated against the only virus that really matters. It is going to have free reign for at least four months. This is a completely new cutting edge hybrid virus, and it is off on its merry viral adventure—its own whirlwind world tour. The whole affair is just too speculative for my controlling appetites.

I don't know about the rest of you but it seems that these illnesses are becoming more common place everyday. I'm betting it just population control. It's just that we don't know who is controlling it.

Yeah that's crossed my mind too, perfect way to clear out the house so to speak and reap the rewards. Kind of like corporate downsizing only on an international scale.

If you take a look at that map link it's strange where it's not hitting, either it's got there and no one's reporting it for whatever reason or they're super lucky.

That's another thing about that map, we've got confirmed cases and confirmed deaths but no confirmed recoveries. That would be nice to see added to the data.

Re: H1N1

I actually hadn’t thought of that. I have no way to put it into perspective.

I don’t think one of the major governments would attempt it, but I can’t rule out a smaller organization. I have been anticipating private use of genetic engineering for malevolent purposes. If people can and will write malevolent code, why not do the same thing with DNA.

The reality that the disease killed many healthy young Mexicans right out of the starting gate, but no Americans, is not easy to account for. If it was an attack, it was probably a botched one. Maybe some cabal of racist bioengineers is sitting in a lodge somewhere anxious that their firecracker fizzled out.

I’m not ready to rule out genuine evil. The world is looking pretty apocalyptic these days. I just can’t take myself seriously when I start thinking along those lines. It is one of those dark wishful thoughts that Freud described.

I think it is much more likely that we are just seeing one of the inevitable consequence of large closely quartered populations. From the standpoint of biostatistics, this was bound to happen.
