This monument was erected to honor those who fought the Battle of the Bulge .
Bastogne was the key to succes for Hitlers counter offensive , the 101 st Airborne under the Lead of General Anthony McAuliffe , held the line encouraged by their leaders "NUTS" reply at the moment that the Germans wanted him to surrender .
