New Stanwell Colonial #186
I recently ordered a Stanwell Colonial #186 from SmokingPipes.com for about $76.00. I had received a birthday check and decided to use it to add to my small pipe rotation. The challenge was, what pipe to buy and from whom?
I receive the weekly S/pipes.com newsletter, so looked at their selection from last week's issue. Many of their pipes are "designer pipes" which are WAY more than I'm willing - or my wife is willing - to spend. S/pipes' Stanwells and Petersons appear to be more in my price range.
I was able to focus on the Stanwells as none of the Petes on the site struck a chord with me. I quickly lit on the 186 style, but again, the challenge was what type; Colonial or Legend? As best as I could tell, the difference was in the pipe's finish. I probably chose the Colonial as it was the first batch listed on the site.
I liked this pipe for a couple of reasons...First, it's a different design from my other pipes. I prefer bents, but this Stanwell has a more "modern" than "traditional" design IMO. Second, it has a relatively large bowl - about 2" deep and almost an inch in diameter; and the grain of the bowl looked pretty neat. In the final analysis, we're attracted by the looks.
OK, now to the important stuff...How does this sucker smoke? Well after two bowls of FMATP (which I also ordered with the pipe), in a word: GREAT! Because of the size of the bowl and the amount of tobacco it'll hold, I've been smoking it at night for my last pipe of the day. I can enjoy a 2 - 2 1/2 hour smoke with this baby. Nothing like sitting on my back deck, chatting with Camille about the day's events and smoking this pipe filled with FMATP. There have been no problems what so ever. I look forward to a long lasting relationship with it...and with Camille too, of course.

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
Scott,
A little late I know but congrats on the new pipe. I know firsthand what a good smoker you bought because I've also got a Colonial #186 that I've had several years. I use it for dgt'ing quite often because I can smoke about 1/3-1/2 of the bowl and then have the rest for later. I've got quite a few pipes with larger capacities but it's certainly one of my favorite large capacity pipes. Again, congrats!

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
Thanks guys. Larry, the Colonial continues to be a favorite. I've only smoked FMATP in it, so far; and the combination is great. I wonder if I can keep it exclusive to FMATP. And you're right about its capacity. I don't think I've finished a bowl in one sitting yet. I usually smoke it in the evening while we're out on the deck or watching TV. I don't think I've been able to finish the bowl before bedtime. It's not a bad DGT pipe, especially with the FM.

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
Scott,
Congratulations on the new pipe and thanks for the review. It's always extra nice when a new pipe serves you well from the start and brings one pleasure. I have my eye on a Colonial 217 for my Birthday... *Crosses fingers*

Jackstraw, you got a 217 yet? That's a shape I'm eyeing up, and I'd like to know if anyone has one...

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
SasquatchMan, I now have 3 of the 217 shape. A Colonial, a Vario and a Golden Danish. The 1/8th bent stem is perfect for the shape and the bowl is very comfortable in the hand. All three are light in weight and have a nice balance if you clench. Great Smokers too from the first bowl.

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
I have a 126 and a 204....both are excellent flake pipes. That 217 might be the next Stanny I want to add to the stable....sweet looking pipe!

Re: New Stanwell Colonial #186
Ted, if you like the feel and balance of the 204 you have, you should like the 217 as well.
