Peterson 315XL
This is Peterson's giant calabash shape, and man, it holds a big pile of weed. I got the fishtail version, rusticated. The Peterson system well is drilled very nicely, as is the air hole through to the bowl. I like the Peterson rustication because it's interesting in the hand, and has a really nice colour, very similar to old Brigham pipes.
This pipe hangs nicely, though it's a bit much for anything more demanding than reading or intermittent naps. This one came with a precarbed chamber, which is nicer for the first smoke than the infamous peterson dip-stain. First smoke dry and cool.
I'd like to see a tiny bit more wood on the walls of this bowl. Not to say they are thin, but the whole thing is just a tiny bit out of proportion if you ask me (and no one did).
This is not a quick-puff, tuck in your pocket kind of pipe. This is a one hour + long time sit down, preferably with a beverage and a book kind of pipe. I payed less than 100 USD from Smokingpipes.com. I notice pipesandcigars has this very nice looking smooth fishtail for an even better price. http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/pipes-cigars-tobacco_1912_15268478
Anyone looking for a big indestructable full bent can stop right here. This has "favorite pipe" all over it.

Re: Peterson 315XL
S/Man...That is a nice looking pipe. I'm partial to bents and larger bowls.
I have a Peterson #305, which is smaller than the 315 XL, but of similar shape. It too is rusticated, which I also like. About the only down side to this pipe is its smaller size. As I mentioned, being partial to larger bowls and hour long smokes - the 305 just doesn't quite measure up in that regard.

Re: Peterson 315XL
I actually started out looking at oh-fives, but I thought the slightly bigger 315 was more what I was after... the Stanwells I've recently picked up are all smaller, so I thought I'd go back to what I know from Peterson - large deep bowl on a system pipe. Can't go wrong.

I agree, most of my Stanwells are large and deep. Had I known better I would have followed your lead on the Pete, but it was the first "name" pipe I ever bought.

Re: Peterson 315XL
Well, you can't call a Peterson 305 a mistake, by any means, I wouldn't think. I love my little 303. Not the biggest pipe in the world, but it's great for a medium small smoke. I don't always have time to smoke the 140th Ann. which has a capacity for about half a tin of tobacco, so littler pipes fill the bill more often for me.
That said the 315 is a really nice size. Not a huge pipe, very comfy, but still a really good bowl size. I'm quite happy with it. Now, all I need is a Rook or two, and I'll be DONE buying pipes.

Re: Peterson 315XL
My wife has really been cool. I first smoked a pipe about 15 years ago, and have done so on and off since. This year I got into it more seriously, and have had the pleasure of some decent pipes and some decent tobacco, and the money for both. I've bought 9 pipes since February, to the tune of well over 1000 bucks. She hasn't said anything, except a bit of teasing about how many "last one"s I have. What a gal.
I really do see pipes as art, and I really appreciate every one I have, and I hope that it is always that way. I was REALLY thrilled to find a picture of Georgio Imperatori who made my il Ceppo in the early nineties. It was so neat to see the artisan behind my pipe. My wife cared in a kind of "Well, I'm glad you're happy" way, which is more than I can usually muster for her latest seed catalogue or garden implement.
Smokingpipes just got a load of new rooks, too, the buggers. They had a lovely "King" for about 5 minutes before it got purchased.

It's not that no one does not believe you, we just remember back when we actually had that same delusion.
