RE: Family Moonshine recipe: Limoncello
Just finished making a batch of our old Italian family recipe and figured I would share it with all of you. I have some of this on hand all the time in the freezer, and guests love it as much as I do. It is VERY easy to make and is delicious, especially after a meal This recipe is straight from my relative's farm in Italy, where they grow....lemons!
The end result is a tangy lemon liquor that packs a MAJOR punch, but is the traditional drink in Southern Italy. Here is how you make it.
You will need:
1 Liter bottle of Everclear Grain Alcohol (190 proof)
12 lemons
1/2 of a 5 lb. bag of sugar
Peel the 12 lemons (try to get as little white flesh as you can, so it is mostly strips of the yellow peel). Put them in a glass jar or a large steel bowl with the 1 liter of Everclear alcohol. Let this sit for 8 days. If using a steel bowl, cover it with saran wrap.
After 8 days (or more): Fill the empty 1 liter bottle from the Everclear with water and dump it in a large pot. Add 1/2 of the 5 lb. bag of sugar in the pot. Bring the sugar water to a boil and then let it boil for 20 minutes on medium/low (a slow, gentle boil). Do this without a lid. Shut off the heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature (this is most important, it can not be hot or it will ruin the alcohol). Once it is cool, strain the peels from the alcohol that has been sitting. You can pour this through a strainer or scoop them out with a screened spoon of some type. Pour the alcohol (it will now be yellow) into the sugar water. Stir it up. Done!
Pour the mixture into empty bottles. This usually makes about 2 1/2 liters so have a few nice size bottles handy, or a bunch of smaller ones. I always use the Everclear bottle since it is hanging around, as well a others like empty Vodka bottles, etc. Put the bottle(s) in the freezer overnight. Don't worry, it will not freeze....believe me. You can store some of the bottles anywhere and put them in the freezer when you are ready to use them. After you have let one sit overnight in the freezer, pour some in a shotglass and drink it up.
Word of warning: The finished product is about 90-100 proof (I think..), so although it is really sweet and yummy it is strong.
I have also made this recipe with raspberries and it was GREAT (use 3-4 pints instead of the lemon peels and crush them up a bit in the alcohol). I have also used limes, which was delicious and a great green color, and even tangerine...yummy.
When you finish the limoncello will look like this:

Tom, I had something like that in Indonesia too. It was made of coconuts and was a killer...same thing: stand up and then fall down
