Smokers Forum.....
I just came from Smokers Forum http://www.smokersforums.co.uk ...Ron, the board owner, is going to shut the board down. I have already received a few requests to open GPSF to the orphans of SF.
What I'm asking for here, is input. What are your feelings? What do you see as the up...and down...sides of such a move? If...and that's a BIG *IF*...we do, would you be willing to help with board moderation? Troll patrol? Whatever else crops up.
This is as much your board as it is mine...probably more-so. I inherited the ownership from Larry when he passed, but it's YOU FOLKS that keep Global alive and viable. I really need guidance here...
We're family.I would hope that you will voice your feelings and opinions/suggestions openly and freely. I would hope that we can sit down and talk this decision through without rancor or hurt/hard feelings.
I know it sounds stupid, but I've come to love you guys...I want our friendship to last...for a very long time.
OK..the floor is open for discussion.....

Re: Smokers Forum.....
Hi Ted,
Iwas one who asked you regarding the Peterson's Group. I modelled this group on your forum, and I can vouch for them.
Any help that you require just ask, I have done most of forum management and will help where ever I can.
The knowledge and humour we have will fit right in.
I could start "The Old Codgers" on here.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
It is important that GPSF is not subsumed into a new SF - hell on SF they even use words like "subsumed" !
However a few people could well migrate and it is important that this still remains a group of real friends.
If needed, I should be pleased to help out as and how I can.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
Ted I think we ought to welcome any who come, provided it doesn't become a "me too" forum. It seems like lots of posts on SF are like that. Any way I can help I will. You know how to get in touch with me.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
The identity of this group should not be changed to accomadate others. Make all welcome as already suggested but leave this forum as is.Of course this is MHO only

Re: Smokers Forum.....
Thanks kiddies...
My biggest concern is security. Unlike SF, this is a free board with all its limitations. I'm certainly NO guru when it comes to running something like this...hell, I can't even fix the darned splash thingie at the top! If any of you have experience in managing a forum, e-mail me and we can discuss options.
If we open the forum, we will need some good information as to what we can and can't do...how we protect ourselves from bots and spammers (does this outfit even HAVE such protections...I don't even know where or how to look). In other words, I'm the worlds worst choice for the admin/mod position....
I took this on for Larry....truth is, he left SF due to a conflict with all the rules and regs. I've almost left myself...for the same reason (ask Peter...he talked me into hanging around). I don't want to become another SF...but is it inevitable?
I've "run"this place with a soft touch...the way Larry wanted it. You all have made it easy. I think I could leave for a week...month...year, and the place would still be here. We're not a forum, we're a family.
As much as I would love to welcome all with open arms.....<sigh!>
Again, I want us all to make the decision...yea or nay, together.
Keep the comments, ideas...and your feelings...coming. It's important to me.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
Ted, I am all for opening it up for the orphans. I was a member there for a while (a very short while). I think any and all should be welcome. What I would hate to see happen is this turning into a place where we have groups and sub-groups and a few sub-sub-groups where a fella needs the secret code word in order to post.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
Ted, I feel the same as you,the members here have become family.
I hate the thought of losing the close knit community we have here, but I think we should welcome any new members who are interested.
Sorry, can't help with the security stuff.

Re: Smokers Forum.....
As it grows, let it be slowly. There are some great people at Smokers Forum but if it happens all at once we will be overwhelmed.. We all have a vested interest in this place. Stop and think what Larry would do, don't be hesitant to ask questions a few of us remember him well LOL. Right now I bet he's laughing his ass off at us LOL
