Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I saw this at a different forum yesterday and thought I should share it with you guys.
The recipient was dumbfounded (because he's a nice guy and mild mannered), but agreed with the content. Here goes...
Email sent to all registered user's of that site yesterday:
"Ladies and Gentlemen,
Some of you have forgotten that Tobacco Reviews is a database of reviews of tobaccos. It is not a place for you to display your ego. Do not, under any circumstances, reply to the review of another reviewer in your review. State your case about your experience with the tobacco in question and leave it at that.
I will not tolerate any meta-reviews or critiques of other peoples reviews. That kind of infantile posturing and the incessant squabbling it brings about will not be tolerated at all. There will be no warnings, no second chances, no reprieves.
From right now, you have exactly one week to clean up your reviews, eliminating all unnecessary editorializing about other reviewers. All reviews found to contain such silliness after that week has expired will be summarily deleted. Repeat offenders will be banned.
Sorry to be such a hard-ass about this, but I have the sole responsibility for keeping the database useful, and I intend to do exactly that. If anyone would like to snitch out reviews that violate this policy, please wait for the week to expire, and then email me privately with a link to the offending review(s). Anyone using this topic/thread to vent their spleen about other reviewers will also be summarily banned. You have been warned.
Sincerely,
Your Dictator For Life
p.s. All of you with empty (or nearly empty) reviews who are using the database as a way to keep track of some wish list or other silly purpose are next on my list, so you might as well go write a real review now. I’ve had enough of this crap as well."
Mr. Tillman has obviously had it.

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I used to frequent the site, but his reasons for being upset are why I don't anymore.
Also, when he sort of revamped the site a while back, all the reviews from "folloderj" became "tillmanj". Not sure why he decided to take over someone else's reviews.
I usually rely on this place for recommendations, or just trial and error. Reading too many reviews on tr.com kept me initially from trying blends that now I enjoy, that many reviewers did not care for.

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I agree. Reviewing tobacco is not easy. For some people its difficult to separate the personal from the objective. The reviews on tbr are personal. Their objectivity go as far as their likes and dislikes. On the other hand, I understand him being upset. I saw a couple of comments that should never have been there. Unnecessarily graphic.

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I used to go there quite often...now I just ask Scott.
Seriously, the only way to use TR successfully is to find a few folks whose tastes are in line with yours....that takes a lot of research, and I'm just too busy (read "lazy" here) to take the time. I found that I have enough friends here and at SF with tastes like mine to get a good feel for a new blend.

I still on occasion visit T.R.
I take it all with a grain of salt.

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I agree that the reviews on TR should be confined to tobaccos and not other people's reviews or attacks on pipe shops and blenders. I saw an attack on J.M. Boswell and his family that was particularly upsetting to me because I've dealt with the Boswells on many occasions and found them to be some of the finest people in the industry.

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
It all boils down to one thing...if you're going to use a review site like this, you need to sort the wheat from the chaff. There's a lot of crap out there, but also some good information to be had. Just understand that, and use common sense. Simple, huh?

Re: Tobacco Reviews Goes Postal
I visit TR all the time to get some idea about a tobacco but I know that taste is subjective. What one person loves I wouldnt use as fertiliser on my roses because I love them to much. As long as you relise this about TR, then its okay

Not as daunting a task as you think Ted. I made a quick list of a half dozen tobaccos I like and another half dozen I had tried that just did not work out for me. I skimmed the reviews on those and looked for reviewers possitive and negative comments. In general the reviewers that liked the same ones I did also disliked the ones on my yuck list.
