GLP Union Square
Picture a farm in colonial America. They grow some tobacco leaves, hang them in a barn to dry with some heat from a nearby flue, press the baccy, and let it sit until the next summer - no additives, no casings, just farm-fresh baccy. Then, on a hot summer morning, you spark up a bowl of this in a colonial pipe: Heaven.
I love flue-cured tobacco, especially no-nonsense VA Flakes so it was hard for this one not to please me. And that is what this is – no-nonsense unadulterated baccy. (I have to add that the tobacco is visually gorgeous – it’s golden yellow in color and almost glows it is so bright). I much prefer lemon and orange-belt VA over red VA so I was in good company. I get grassy, oats, and hay flavor up front, especially at the start and then it settles into a very clean bright VA Flavor for the rest of the bowl. It’s not, for me at least (and maybe others will find differently), a baccy that changes much during the smoke (it deepens a bit as you go along, but not much), but the flavor is spot-on to my liking throughout – I still need to try it in more kinds of pipes (I noticed Scott said it works better for him in big bowls – haven’t really smoked it in a beast yet). I find it similar to F+T Cut VA Plug but with less sweetness, and a lot like Patriot Flake if you minus the perique, or even Orlik GS minus the burley. When you first sample it, I recommend trying it as the first smoke of the day so that all the subtle flavors can show up. I think it is strange that so many reviewers on T-reviews talk about this “replacing” SG FVF in their rotation. To me, it is a totally different tobacco. Whereas FVF is darker, with prune, date, raisin flavors, this is bright with hay, grass, oats. Plus, who wants to have to replace one baccy with another anyway? LOL
As for me, I am going to snag at least 2-3 tins of this first harvest asap, as soon as I can afford to.

Re: GLP Union Square
Thanks for the review, Johnny.
I fully agree with you it did remind me of a tastier version of F&T Cut VA Plug.
I did the same as you and ahd it as my 1st smoke of the day.
It will not replace FVF OR MacCrannie's Red Flake, but it has gone straight to my top three VA's.

Re: GLP Union Square
Well, I posted this in "What are you smoking" a while back...quote:
Smoking more Union Square this AM...trying to get a feel for it. So far, it's a good Virginia, but somewhat monochromatic. The flavor is there, but it just doesn't seem to "pop" for me. I've tried it fresh from the tin and dried for two hours...fold-n-stuff and fully rubbed out. Each offers a different experience...a different set of flavors. Now...if I can find the combination that brings them all together.... Think I'm gonna try a couple more bowls, then put this up for a few months.
After a couple more bowls, one in a cob and the other in a large meer, this tobacco still seems to be lacking. The flavors are there, just not as full as I had hoped. Sooooo...into the jar she goes!
I've found that many of Greg's tobaccos need to age for a few months before they meld completely. This one has potential....I just hope some more age will bring it into its own. For the moment, two and a half stars.
