Player's Navy Cut Flake
Just receieved another installment of this from Jimbo...thought I would do a review.
Player's Navy Cut is a Virginia flake tobacco from the UK...comes in a 50g tray. The flakes are thin and evenly cut...moisture is "just right" for me. Color varies from cream to a medium chocolate.
Tin aroma: Opening the pouch and sniffing the flakes elicits a sweet, almost fig-and-hay aroma, with just a hint of caramel. The whole is actually quite subtle...
Packing and lighting: I use the "fold-n-stuff" on these flakes. One and a half flakes, folded in thirds, fills a group 4 pipe to about 3/4...the other half I rubbed out for kindling. Moisture content is perfect; dry enough to smoke easily but moist enough to be easy to handle. Because the mixture is a bit springy as well as fine, I pack on the light side as you could easily pack it a little tight.
One charring light, a very light tamp, and a second light are all that's required to create a good even burn, with rich white clouds of sweet Virginia smoke.
Smoking: While this is a mild smoke, both in flavor and nicotine content, I delight in the sweet subtlety of the flavors; fresh-barned hay and a touch of caramel. The flavors mingle and grow as the bowl progresses, but never become "full" or overwhelming. It smokes to a soft grey-white ash with just a bit of damp dottle at the end.
Overall impressions: This is a soft smoke, quite suitable for an all day, every day smoke. The room note is almost non-existent, and certainly not offensive. If you want nicotine, look elsewhere. If you want a sweet, unassuming but surprizingly pleasant smoke, that will never bite your tongue or offend the Missus, I recommend you find some Player's Navy Cut Flake.

Re: Player's Navy Cut Flake
Very good description Ted.
In former days there were many varieties of this; Original Medium, Tawny (darker and figgier as Marlin is to OG), Gold Leaf (lighter, more like Capstan), De Luxe (roundels and like Escudo without Perique) and "No Name" ( more refined ready rubbed DL).
The original was my everyday smoke (along with original 3 Nuns) for many a year.
Glad you enjoy it.
