McClelland Black Shag

Sherlock Holmes kept it in the toe of a Persian slipper nailed to the mantelpiece.

Upon opening the tin I was greeted with the typical McClelland ketchup smell. The blend is mostly dark brown with a few black strands intermingled. The moisture level is just about perfect for immediate consumption. Upon first light the ketchup smell is dominate, but quickly dissappears
into a nice sweet and tangy virginia.
This blend is quite mild and burns to a mottled gray ash.
I experieced no tongue bite from this blend which is odd because virginias always bite me.
This tin is from 1999. I'm curious to see if newer offering are as good.

Here is my try at a baccy review.
Thanks for reading.

There are some McC's that have a bite but for the most part, I've had little problem with them. The ones that get me most are the 20XX series. The 51XX series is, for the most part, quite tame, IMVHO. The only burley/aero I've tried is 110 and it's very good. Who was it that said "I've never met a McClellands that I didn't like"....? emoticon emoticon

Hmmm...that's interesting. I don't recall that problem with any of the McC's I've tried; but then, I don't detect the ketchup smell either. And, like Mike I, too, love the McC blends - at least the ones I've smoked.

Thanks for the review Rob. Any tobacco good enough for Sherlock Holmes has to be worth a try. It's been added to my list.

I've had fresh and aged 110, 2000, 2015, 2025, 5100, 5110, 5125, and three from the Frogmorton series, FMATP, FMOTT and FMOTB...none has had the infamous ketchup smell....maybe my nose is broke? emoticon I opened a 100 gr. tin of FMOTB just last week. The only "smell" was the heavenly aroma of great tobacco..... emoticon

Great review, Rob - and of a McClelland I haven't tried yet (it will go on the list). The smell of McClelland ketchup makes me drool emoticon I haven't had a bad McClelland yet, and I haven't had a bite from one either.
