First installment of the Bigger Rack!
Well, I have the cabinet started and I forgot how much work these things can be. anyway, here is the first installment of the tutorial:
Cabinet size: 5ft X 40in.
I purchased ten 8ft. 1"x6" pine boards, trying too get the best ones I could get for the least money. I brought the boards home and proceeded too trim the ends square and cut 2 boards 40in which will be the cabinet ends. I then cut 8 boards too 5ft. which will be used for both the pipe holders, the top for the stems and the bottom for the bowls. They will also be the top and bottom of the cabinet.
Take two boards 5ft. long and mark each at 1 3/4in. from one edge and mark a line the entire length on these marks. Then starting at dead center of the board and on the marked line make a mark across the line at 2in. intervals in both directions. These two boards will be used for the slotted boards for the stems.
Now drill a small pilot hole at each mark, this be a guide for the hole saw and will make the drilling with the hole saw easier.
After all the pilot holes are drilled (I only make a starter hole, not all the way thru the board.) I begin drilling the holes with the hole saw. I don't drill all the way thru, but only enough so that the bit in the middle of the hole saw goes all the way thru. I then turn the board over and finish drilling the hole the rest of the way thru. I do this so that the hole has a smoother edge on both sides of the board.
After drilling these boards I set my table saw so that I could rip the boards right thru the center of the holes I drilled. (Making these strips 1 3/4in. wide) I did this on both boards then ripped the other side evenly with the first, making 4 separate pieces which will be the slots for the stems.
I then take these pieces and router the entire length on the slot side too smooth it and give it a better look. (I forgot too take a picture of the routered edges till later)
I then take four of the 5ft. boards and measure in 1 3/4in. from the edge on each board, continuing it the entire length of each board marking a line like I did on the first boards. I then do the same as the others and mark at 2" intervals and then drill as I did in the first boards also. I then rout around the inside of each hole making the spot for the for the bowl too sit. This will be your bottom board in the rack.
Here is what the two pieces look like together. I set a wood strip under each end working on my spacing. I'll include these measurements in the next installment of "The Building of the Cabinet"

Looking good Steverino! That's gonna be one awesome pipe cabinet. How many pipes did you say it will hold?

Re: First installment of the Bigger Rack!
Well I actually thought more of the rack would be taken up with pipes too begin with, but looks like this one will also have tobacco storage room.
The actual capacity is 29 pipes per shelf and there will be 4 for a total of 116 pipes!
The cabinet will be 5ft wide X 40in. tall.
Should be a good one when I'm done.

Not sure I want a 5ft. rack hanging on my wall, but hey, it could be used that way.
Jack, you don't have too use the same size hole saw as I did. The hole saw size is 1in.

My wife has to much of that sentimental "crap" hanging up, no way it would work here, no room left.
