Second installment "Bigger Pipe Cabinet"

Here is the second installment of the building of my bigger cabinet. I got all the parts sanded and stained. I also assembled the framework and got the bottoms with the holes for the bowls installed in the framework. Next will be adding the rails for the stems which I may get done today. As the wife said when she saw it assembled.... "That thing is Huge"

I stained the pieces before assembling. This made getting the stain everywhere easier too accomplish. Here are some of the pieces after staining.

Too assemble, I installed a side board on each end of the top board. I used sheet rock screws for assembly. I drilled thru the side boards and then drilled a bigger hole too countersink the screws so that they don't stick up. If you wanted a more finished look you could countersink the holes more and put wooden plugs over the screws. I like the look of the black screws as with the dark stain, it gives it a more rustic look.
After mounting the top board, I measured down 3 inches and made a mark. (This will be the amount of space for stems, above the stem slots.) I then measured 3/4in. down from this mark which is the thickness of the stem slot board. From the bottom mark I then measured down 4in. which is the distance between the slot and bowl board. Then measuring another 3/4in from this mark which is the thickness of the bowl board. I continued these measurements and marks all the way down the sides till I had marks and places for all 4 of the slot rails and all 4 of the bowl boards. I then assembled these and ended up with this:

Next will come installation of the stem rails and the back. I'll also add a board on the bottom/front too give the cabinet a more finished look and add more strength. I'll add another installment soon!

If there are any questions you might have, feel free too ask here in the thread or PM me. I will help in any way I can too help you make a cabinet too hold your pipes.

Now that is BIG!
I didn't realize how big when it was just a pile of boards. Do you think a center support is needed to keep it from bowing?

Ted, I'm going too install a full back on it. Each shelf and rail will be screwed into the back and this will prevent the bowing problem. Also, when I get ready to install the doors there will be a center brace, as it will probably have 4 doors!

Good God Gertie! That thing is monstrous! The problem I have with it is, if I owned it I would have to fill it up! It would sit there all empty and lonesome until I filled it. LOL Going to be nice Steve. How many pipes will it hold?
