new Zippo

A few months ago I bought a new Zippo pipe lighter and have had constant problems with it being hard to light. I have even pulled the packing and wick, trimmed and re-installed them. But it still is hard to light..I wear out my thumb trying and frequently have to give up. My old standard Zippo has never had this problem.
Is this a known problem with this type of lighter? Anyone else have problems with them?

John

Well John, I don't know about "new" Zippo's....my pipe lighter is about 6 years old and functions near perfectly. I have a 2K6 or 2K7 Zippo pipe lighter that I've never fired up, so I can't comment on it......
My advice, go to the Zippo site and ask them if there have been problems....they may offer to replace yours, or at least give you some feed back?

I run into this every once in awhile John. The usual fix for me is to take a few drops of my pipe cleaning alcaboom and clean up the wheel. Sometimes all thats needed is to back off the screw that keeps pressure on the flint a turn or so. emoticon

John, I have a relatively new Zippo as well, but the only time I have a problem like the one you describe is when it requires a new flint.

I bought a new zippo pipe lighter a couple years ago and had the same trouble. As it turns out the flint from the factory was bad. A new flint and since then it's worked great.

Re: new Zippo

I got one when I was in US and it's always worked great. Trouble is I can't stand the taste it gives to the smoke so I only use it for fishing and the like and then, of course, the fuel's dried up by next time.

Got an old Boy for regular use and it's never not lit first flick and lasts days (even at my rate of use). Trouble with that is it's not as good in the wind and it's a b****r if you drop it in the river!

Re: new Zippo

Thanks for the feedback..looks like there is a common problem with this type of lighter. I use Ronson fluid and flints as they are the only ones available local. I guess will consult Zippo about it also.
note: what is 'alcaboom'?
