Mouth bite

Hello! New pipe smoker here.

Full disclosure: I just got kicked out of http://www.smokersforums.co.uk for pointing out the irony of their politically-correct moderation policies which censored words like "Nazi" and "Hitler" as if the average poster age there was 6 rather than 60 (don't have much tolerance for the kind of "polite" which means ignoring relevant facts of reality--its an inversion of the true meaning of "civilized" in my book). Some nice fellow in suggested I come here, hopefully the moderators here are more sane emoticon

Anyway, I've read a lot about mouth bite, but I'm having experience with a "bite" to my lower lip, just on the inside, it gets irritated and more bothersome than the tongue. Some friendly people over at the other forum gave me some things to try, I was wondering if anyone here has had that kind of experience and has any other suggestions.

Thanks!

Well followreason, I am sure your posts will be welcome here, but don't bet the farm on the sanity of the mods. emoticon

It sounds like maybe you are having a reaction to the stem more than the smoke.

Hi there and welcome.

I sometimes get the same thing to my lower lip and all i can think of is it's, irritation caused by the blend I'm smoking. What I try to do is move the pipe around from side to side of my mouth to prevent any one area from being concentrated on, share the load as they say.

Hey, I got kicked out (banned) from only 2 forums in my life. Both of them were British. Hope I'm not stepping on toes here but the British seems a bit narrow minded in general.
The bite on the lip might be caused by a pipe smoking a bit on the wet side that leaks a bit of condensation onto the lip. If this happens with different pipes it is unlikely that this is the problem but if only one pipe causes the problem be sure to investigate the cause.

Thanks for the replies!

I've done a little more research, and found that burley and aromatics don't seem to cause it, but Squadron Leader and FVF (which I absolutely loved) does. So it seems to have something to do with Virginia tobacco?

FVF was a bit wet, I let it dry for about 1/2 hour, maybe that wasn't enough?

Thanks for your help guys.

You might try drying it to almost brittle...
It could be that you're having a chemical reaction to something in the Va's...I have that problem with Burley. Love it, but it bites me like a rabid dog. <sigh>

Hmmm... just my two cents but:

Do you have more than one pipe? If not, get yourself a corn cob for a few bucks and see if this persists, if so then it is definitively something with the blends (Ted might be spot on in this case). Can I ask what kind of Burley you are smoking? (I ask because it may be that in switching to SL and FVF from aros you are smoking a bit hard on baccy that is more likely to bite.)

Sidebar: I never ever dry out FVF at all - it'll burn "as is" out of the tin even though it looks too moist. When I have dried it out it just doesn't compare.

I have only 1 decent pipe. Thanks for the suggestion on corncobs, I'll try it. I was smoking Mac Baren London Blend (and it tasted awful to me--if I'm stuck with Burley I'll probably throw in the towel on the pipe).

Shows what I know! Thanks for the tip.

Re: Mouth bite

MacBaren London Burley is a pretty strong blend, so if that is not biting you it just might be the pipe. Let us know how things go and hopefully we can help sort this all out.

p.s. just my two cents about FVF, try it every way and see how you like it best.
