Couple of reasons...cake inhibits the absorption of tobacco smoke, which is what colors quality meerschaums. And cake tends to "flavor" the tobaccos you're smoking....ghosts! Keep the pipe cake free and you get a truer tobacco flavor and the pipe colors.....

I've found that getting in the habit of wiping out the bowl with a paper towel right after it's cooled goes a long way towards preventing caking.

I just shove it down into the bowl and twist it around a few times and it removes the carbon before it has a chance to harden.
