Newbie around here
I have smoked a pipe on and off for the last 5 or so years. I was (am) a cigar smoker.Lately however, I have been really enjoying my pipe. The cost of my cigars made me get the old pipe out. I'm smoking a Savenelli Oscar I bought a few years back.Right now I'm smoking Captain Black Gold. In the past I've bought some of my local shop's blends. May be a dumb question, but what better tobaccos would I like if I like the Captain Black Gold? Something similar in taste but a lot better quality.
Also, my great uncle, who passed away a few years ago, was once a pipe smoker. My great aunt gave me a couple of his pipes, including a fairly new one as far as use. It is a Lorenzo that was purchased I guess in the early 80's. It has Ambra stamped or craved right under the Lorenzo . Opposite side has the number 738 and Italy.
Can anybody tell me anything about this pipe? I've googled it and can't really find anything on it.
This pipe hasn't seen daylight in over 25 years. Anything I should do be for smoking it? It doesn't have a bad oder, but a kinda strange one that I can't identify.
Thanks for any help y'all can give. I look forward to the discussions.
Here is the picture of the pipe.

Re: Newbie around here
Hi there gjwmsu...(what's that stand for?) Welcome to the board.
Your great uncle left you some nice briar. Lorenzos are well made pipes.
As for cleaning it, you will need some alcohol (best is denatured, but isopropyl will work) and some cotton balls and pipe cleaners. Gently remove the stem, plug the hole, then fill the bowl to near the top with cotton balls. Now use an eye dropper to add the alcohol until the bowl is almost full. Let this sit for 6-8 hours, (the cotton balls will turn dark brown)...then remove the saturated cotton and repeat until they come out fairly clean. A strong word of warning....don't get the alcohol on the outside of the bowl! It'll peel the finish right off.
Once you've cleaned the bowl, you can use alcohol soaked pipe cleaners to clean the shank of the pipe and the stem. Set the whole she-bang aside for a day or two....you're ready to go!
I'm not familiar with the Captain Black tobaccos, but you might check HERE for some reviews. I understand that it's an aromatic...not my favorite, but you might try Evening Stroll from Mike at Mars or Shortcut to Mushrooms fromJust For Him. Both are good quality aros.

Re: Newbie around here
Thanks. I've never heard of the cotton ball method. I'll try it. I'm not that married to aromatics. What's a good starter tobacco?
Thanks again.

Re: Newbie around here
Thanks for the welcomes. I look forward to learning more. My problem is the overwhelming number of choices in tobaccos. I'm trying Prince Albert now. A lot better than the Captain Black. I'm going to the closest pipe shop to me today. (Over 60 miles) Gonna try and find some tobaccos to try.

Re: Newbie around here
Yep...PA is a good smoke. It's a burley blend and the burley-philes here will fill your head with all sorts of great burley blends. HOWEVER...my favorite is a good Virginia or Va/Perique tobacco. especially in the summer months. When you get to that B&M, ask for a few samples...1-2 ozs. A good shop will set you right up. Try McClelland's 5100 or Rattrays
red Rapparie, both fine straight Va's. For a good beginning Va/Per, try McClelland's Frog Morton on the Bayou. I think you'll be impressed.
Whatever you smoke, take your time, sipping rather than puffing. Too fast and hard, and you will suffer some tongue-bite...ouch! Re-lights are more common than many let on...not to worry. This is *supposed* to be a fun hobby. don't let technique and all that stuff over shaddow that.
