Grabow constipation

I have a Grabow that keeps plugging up as soon as I light it. I clear it and does it right away again. I'm not drawing too hard, I dont think. Any body got any advise ?

Is it plugging up in the bottom of the bowl or in the stem

Seems to be in the bowl. This pipe is filtered and threaded. One possibility, I'm using Medico filters which are too small for a Grabow so that I have to wrap tape around the part that inserts in the mouthpiece and it's probably not the right length either. Does that sound like the culprit to you ?

I'm not sure about the filter, that's the first thing to go on a new pipe that is so equipped. It may be a packing problem, how do you load your pipe?? Or it may be that the draft hole in the bottom of the bowl is too large...

John...I think Tom might have hit on it. Ditch the filter and see what it does.

Is the tenon threaded?

Haven't seen a Grabow with a screw on stem that will take a filter. The ones I have seen have a removable stinger.

Just my .02 cents.

I assumed that it takes a filter because the opening thru the threaded part is large enough for one and so is the part it screws into. I will try it w/o the filter.
Hello Rob --I appreciate your $.02 worth. What is a striker ?

Hi John!

Kaywoodie Drinkless models and some Grabows had a little doo dad on the end of the stem that was supposed to condensate moisture to provide for a drier smoke.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all - It's great w/o the filter !

Rob - that sounds like a great idea to me. I was thinking(that's dangerous) the other day a pipe should have a 'spit valve' like the brass instruments.
