My problem is that I like to smoke the same pipe three or four times in a row, w/o resting. I found that the moisture buildup, especially in the humid Phila summer, can be exceptionally bad for the smoking quality. A corollary to your study might be to smoke more in the winter outdoors, and see if the difference in temperature between the bowl and the colder air doesn't cause more condensation of the smoke, and a wetter pipe requiring a cleaner.

BTW, where do you get your tobacco in Phila, other than on-line? So many B&Ms have closed in the last 40 years, that it is almost impossible to find a quality shop.
