RESULT: I can't tell any difference - there is no "bad" taste in these pipes and all the baccy tastes the same as the other pipes that get the pipe cleaner. I always make sure all my pipes have time to dry after emptying them with a tamper before I smoke them again, and I can only conclude that it is moisture that results from leaving smoked baccy in a pipe, and not the lack of a pipe cleaner running through a pipe that causes a "bad" taste
Thoughts?

I really think that it's not gross at all. It may be that your technique and drier, quality tobacco can go a long way in providing a better smoke. My problem is that I like to smoke the same pipe three or four times in a row, w/o resting. I found that the moisture buildup, especially in the humid Phila summer, can be exceptionally bad for the smoking quality. A corollary to your study might be to smoke more in the winter outdoors, and see if the difference in temperature between the bowl and the colder air doesn't cause more condensation of the smoke, and a wetter pipe requiring a cleaner.
BTW, where do you get your tobacco in Phila, other than on-line? So many B&Ms have closed in the last 40 years, that it is almost impossible to find a quality shop.

Johnny, more power to you buddy. It works for you so fly at it.
Does it really make a difference? I don't know, but since I don't know for sure, well pipe cleaners are really pretty cheap.

Re: Blasphemer! No Pipe Cleaners!!!
Johhny,
I've found through experience, any "off" taste(for me)is because of moisture build up. Some pipes smoke cool and dry, some do not. The debate of the correct frequency of pipe cleaner use is simply a matter of preference, just like proper cake formation in the bowl and shank or lack there of...
Bottom line, whatever works is the right way.

Re: Blasphemer! No Pipe Cleaners!!!
Thanks guys - it could also be that I keep my pipe collection in the basement here in Philly and it is actually really dry down there, which might be helping too.
Morleysson - we live in the same town? I had no idea! I'll send ya a pm about baccy in Philly etc.

Re: Blasphemer! No Pipe Cleaners!!!
I applaud you for your courage!
As for me, the run-through with a cleaner has become second nature to me, and I just keep doing it without any assurance that it does any good.
I do notice, however, that while the cleaner may come out relatively clean, there is a lot of moisture clinging to its fibers. I think this moisture may clog up the pores in the briar.
Oh, I should perhaps add that my smoking takes place in Nevada, which has one of the driest climates in the nation.
