Refurbing estate/dirty pipes

After thinking about the posts in the "what are you smoking" thread over the past 2-3 days, I was wondering if anyone would like for me to do a pictorial type thing on refurbing a pipe that's in bad shape but yet salvagable. I may have one or part of one already in my files somewhere but if not, I could make one if I had a pipe in the condition described above. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I'll see what I can do but am not going to give a time frame. emoticon In the meantime before you do something you are not sure of such as the stain, just let me know and I'll help if I can.

OK....question time. As we talked about "over there", some of my pipe stems are dis-colored. I have a dremel and small buffing wheels, but what should I use as a buffing compound? Also, what do you use on the bowls? Carnuba wax? or something "entirely different" as Monty Python would say..... emoticon

Ted,

I personally strongly advise against using a Dremel with the small buffs for polishing pipes and/or stems. They are going at such a high speed and the buffs are so small the slip factor is extremely high thus damage is extremely likely. It's also very easy to make hot spots (burns) on the stem. If you are going to take the chance though, tripoli is what's used to remove the grunge and carnuba for polishing. There are other waxes and polishes that are used but those would do it.

You can use toothpaste with whiteners and rub the stems down, let it dry and then polish with a soft, dry cloth to bring back the black and shine. It may take a few times but it will usually work. Savinelli makes a stem polish that works pretty good too but toothpaste usually works about as good. Even with buffers and waxes I use toothpaste on grungy stems sometimes to remove the worst of the beautiful, green patina as the sellers on ebay sometimes use to describe pipe stems. emoticon

If I told you what is used as a bowl coating you may never smoke another bowl that I coat. emoticon emoticon

Thanks Larry. Toothpaste it is. I'm going to brush and floss a couple of stems later this evening. As "pretty" a green as these have, I'll prolly need to get a giant sized tube....LOL
As for what you use on the bowls....I have a rough constitution so you won't freak me out....but you might want to PM me the recipe....don't want to upset the more delicate and sensitive hearts here.... LOLOL
