While it does require buffing the stem, I soak a discolored stem in laundry bleach, keeping the tenon out of the bleach by using a pipe cleaner to hang it. I can see no good in fooling with a tenon. Rinse it well with cold water, dry then buff. You can either use tooth paste, 0000 steel wool, 400 to 1000 grit wet and dry sand paper or a buffer to finish it. After you get the shine you want, apply the wax and buff it out. I use carnuba but I have a heavy duty Baldor. There are several products that will add a protective coat of wax. Paragon, and Flitz to mane just two. Any of the above will require some elbow grease. As mentioned before, do not use a dremel.
