Pipe mud
If anyone has a pipe or pipes that don't seem to smoke all the way down, check the draught hole. As it enters the bowl, it should be exactly at the bottom of the bowl. However, some are drilled above the bowl which makes smoking to the bottom impossible as well as letting the baccy at the bottom accumulate moisture thus making a wet smoke. For these pipes, there is hope. Take some ash from a preferably quality cigar or if not some clean ash from your pipe, mix it with a small amount of water until it forms a thick paste. Place this paste in the bottom of the bowl until it reaches the bottom of the draught hole and then take the blunt end of an aluminum tamper or large nail and press the paste evenly. Be careful not to get any paste in the draught hole and if so use a pipe cleaner to remove it before pressing the mixture. Leave the mixture to dry for a day or so until it hardens (usually it will get lighter as it dries) and then load as usual. You will find the pipe now smokes all the way to the bottom without excessive moisture. When removing the ash after the smoke be careful to not remove the mixture but after a few smokes the heat will have hardened it so it will be very difficult to remove.

Re: Pipe mud
im definitely going to do this when i get back to my pipes. ive noticed that my dr grabow has been smoking down to about 1/4 of an inch and then going out, probably from the accumulated moisture. i alway thought that it was just the initial portion that i packed down and the cherry didnt carry over to that section of tobacco. thanks for the tip larry

Re: Pipe mud
You can look down into the bowl and see where the hole is located. I usually use a small pen flashlight to see the holes and check out other things on a pipe. In addition to the draught holes being drilled high sometimes, they are also off centered left or right. There's really not much that can be done about that but if the hole is close to center at least that's better than being drilled way too high. If indeed the hole is too high on your Grabow maybe the mud will help. Let us know if that's the problem and if the mud helped.

Re: Pipe mud
Larry, after reading this, I used some cigar ash and honey to make a thick paste and built up the bottom of a pipe that other than being drilled to high and smoked slightly wet, was a nice pipe. After it sets up I'll report back on how it smokes.

Re: Pipe mud
Jack,
Although some folks use honey or honey and water mixed, I've always used plain water. The reason for my mentioning that is to say the honey may take longer to harden than just plain water so I would give it some extra drying time.
For the first bunch ( ) of bowls, don't use your tamper on the very bottom of the bowl but rather very gently loosen the shreds of tobacco. Once the heat has hardened the mud, you can be a little more aggresive if needed. I've got a few pipes with the mud bottom that's been there for so long I've forgotten which pipes they are. It may take a pipe or two's worth of experimenting to get it right but this method will sure help some pipes smoke better.

Re: Pipe mud
Larry,
It worked great! The mud hardened nicely and the pipe now smokes cool and dry. Thanks!
