Briar Wipe?
Wonder if any members use it with any regularity. I have 2 approximately 8"x8" clothes cut from a new cloth diaper. Although my pipes don't gurgle during a smoke nor do I ever have to use a cleaner during a smoke, after each bowl I run a pipe cleaner through the stem into the bowl a couple of times. I then take a small smount of water or saliva and rub it gently on the rim of the bowl to loosen any accumulation that may have gotten there during the smoke. I have one of the cloths designated just for this purpose and while the rim is still damp I'll wipe off the build up. If there's any left, I'll repeat the procedure.
The other cloth has Briar Wipe sprayed on it and after each smoke I wipe the pipe and stem off with the cloth to both clean it and keep somewhat of a shine on it. I must admit that sometimes I may have 3 or 4 pipes waiting to get wiped off but at least I've ran a pipe cleaner through them.
Doing this Briar Wipe with the cloths helps to delay how often I have to do a real good cleaning job on them and buffing them using tripoli, carnuba and wax.
Anyone else use the Briar Wipe?

Re: Briar Wipe?
If you're talking about the stuff that comes in an aerosol can, I use it. It works wonders on briar, and, despite it's cost, it's actually rather economical considering that you can spray a wipe once with it and get a lot of use out of it.

Re: Briar Wipe?
Yep, that's the stuff. It can be had at a decent price with a little shopping around and as you say, it lasts a long time. During the last couple of years before I had to quit work, I found an almost full larger than usual can at a house I had to rennovate where the folks moved and left a lot of stuff behind. I found another can about half full at one of the rental houses I used to own after the tenants left. He wasn't a pipe smoker that I knew of so had no idea why the briar wipe was there but since that didn't matter to me, I brought it home.

Re: Briar Wipe?
Here again, I am the odd ball. I bought some several years ago and used it once. I didn't like it for it gave too much shine and reminds me of a varnished finish.

Re: Briar Wipe?
The first time I tried the Briar Wipe it was using one of the HandiWipes type things that I was told to use. As with you Mike, it seemed to give a false shine or rather a coating that I didn't like at all either. I thought a cloth would be better since it would absorb the spray and not be so oily so I switched to a cloth diaper with a light spraying then I use another diaper with no coating for a final wipe. To be honest I can't even remember the last time I sprayed the cloth with the spray on it because it stays folded up with the non sprayed cloth folded around it. The sprayed one doesn't have that oily/greasy feel like the Handiwipe did when I used it.

Re: Briar Wipe?
I do use carnuba wax when its needed but that hasn't happened very often. The Briar wipe seems to do a good job for me but most of my pipes are rusticated but I still use it on them with a soft toothbrush and I wipe the stem down with it as well. I don't get any taste from it at all. Its strange how the same thing works differantly for differant people. The wax sure does a great job when I use it but I do it by hand. If I used a buffing machine I bet I would screw it up LOL besides its kinda fun doing with a cloth

Re: Briar Wipe?
That's a good point Roger. I have the necessary buffing machines, waxes, tripoli, etc., and can perform that treatment any time I choose to so maybe that's why I don't too much worry about making them shine using the Briar Wipe.
I am much more fanatical about clean than shiny. I don't like to and won't have a build up around the rim of the bowl or any kind of dullness, saliva marks, etc., on the stem. My pipes don't have to shine like glass but I certainly am going to have it clean. I've seen many folks have a large white/gray area around the bit area of their stems from not keeping them wiped off after every use. It doesn't bother me for their pipes to be like that but I just don't want mine like that. When I pick up one of my pipes to smoke I want it as clean as possible and like to do it after each smoke rather than waiting until later. I may wait a while between buffs, completely going through them with alcohol, etc., but they are going to get a good wipe after each smoke as well as running a cleaner through them.
No, I'm not OCD about pipe cleanliness but I do prefer them that way.

Re: Briar Wipe?
During a conversation with Jon today I mentioned this to him but had forgotten to post it here so will now.
There are a vast number of folks who say that Favor furniture polish is the same formula as Briar Wipe and it's about one fifth or even less than buying Briar Wipe. I have an ample supply of Briar Wipe but if I needed some, I would definitely try the Favor but making sure it was the unscented kind if in fact it comes in different scents. I've read a couple of folks say there is a slight variation in the formula but even at that there's not enough to make a difference.
There may be a website somewhere that lists the different formulas for products so they can be compared but I'm not aware of it though.

Re: Briar Wipe?
I had also been told that Johnson’s Favor furniture polish is the same formula as Briar Pipe wipe.
I have used Favor for years. It seems to work very well.
Just a note: the pipe wipe/favor has always given a “temporary” shine to my pipes. Nothing can replace a good buffing with carnauba wax on a buffing wheel.

Sam
