Meer maintenance

Seeking advice on how to care for an old meer. I've got a sultan meer from Turkey that my dad gave me, which is about 40 years old. While it's started the "golden" coloring...primarily just below the stem...it also has some "dirty" aspects--just gunk collected on the face/bowl over 40 some odd years. My dad smoked the pipe off and on while he had it, but he gave up smoking about 20 years ago. I've been smoking it two-to-three times a week since the beginning of the year. I'm not sure the golden coloring is spreading, but the top of the bowl is scorched from lighting the baccy. Any advice??

Thanks,
Scott

Re: Meer maintenance

Morning Scott!
I bought a couple of meers a while back, used, and they were rough. Dirt and oils in the crevases.... I took them apart and plugged the bowl and shank, then put a drop of Dawn dish soap and warm water on them and brushed them *lightly (!) with an old, soft toothbrush. This removed the accumulated dirt and oils but did not harm the wax coating. One was in pretty rough shape so I re-waxed it, which helped. Dry the pipe and buff it gently by hand with a very soft polishing cloth. It should take on a soft polished look. Ream it if needed. Keep only a minimal cake ... too much can crack the bowl. I keep mine at around 1/16" + -.......
Whatever you do, do NOT use any bowl sweeteners in the meer! Also, no bowl polish. I acquired an old meer from a feller who thought he was helping by polishing his meer with carnuba (SP?) wax.....ruined the pipe for any kind of coloring! The stem can be cleaned in the usual manner.....

Re: Meer maintenance

Scott......
Good to hear. Meers are my favorite pipe, smooth and cool smokers and they have the added attraction (for me....) of being unique, with some beautiful artwork. Bit of advice. The darker the baccy, the faster they color, but they also color more unevenly. The shank and lower portion of the bowl will get very dark...almost a black/brown. The lighter baccys take a lot longer to color, but they seem to do so more evenly. If you remember the pic that Larry posted of my meers, the stylized claw has had only VAs and some light burleys through it....beautiful golden patina. The other claw is my pipe for black cavendish etc...and has got a very dark shank. I don't know how old the first is...inherited it...but the other one is only about three years old!
If you would, take a pic of yours sometime and either post it here or e-mail it to me. I always like to see other peoples treasures" ....

Will do Ted. I'm surprised at how good this pipe smokes and how fast it's coloring.
