problem with a pipe
this one pipe I have is a decent(I think) second, bought for about $40, and I use it only for smoking aros. as I'm sure everyone knows, aros tend to smoke hot, or at least most of them, and it seems that holes of sorts have been burned in some spots inside the bowl. more like small crevaces. I also tend to get a rather foul ashy taste towards the end of some bowls in that particular pipe, and the smell, aside the smell of the smoke, is rather pungent, something akin to....ammonia, maybe? the taste towards the end of most bowls goes bad along with the aroma. is this simply from it being smoked too hot, or could the briar be of cheap quality? has anyone had a similar problem?

Re: problem with a pipe
Haven't had that problem...hope I never do! One possibility comes to mind. Remember now, I'm not the expert here by any means! How much cake is in the bowl? Too much cake can crack, leaving a a hot spot on the bowl. This can also crack the bowl due to the differences in expansion when the pipe is hot. I try to keep the cake abour the thickness of a dime.
If you really like the pipe, you *might* consider reaming everything out and starting the cake-building process over...drastic, last ditch alternative. Someone here might have another idea or two....hope so!

Re: problem with a pipe
nah I don't like the pipe that much. it's a decent smoker, not anywhere near as good as my stanwell or anything, but decent. it's just a slightly cheap second, so it's obviously replacable. I was just wondering what the problem might be, if the briar was low quality or whatever.

Re: problem with a pipe
The ashey taste and ammonia aroma tells me the pipe has gone sour. The Professors Pipe Sweetening Treatment is in order.
You can find the details on Pipes.org's lead page.
BTW, some manufactures use ammonia to enhance the addictive effect of nicotine. You an really notice it in cheap OTC cigars when you relight one.
