A Fun Little Scenario

So my players and I were sitting around reminiscing about our old campaign. We starting talking about how at one point they were down in the hells and had to pass through this area of weird magic. In turn about half the party jumped in their portable hole, outfitted with a bottle of air and things like that so it was fully survivable; while the rest of the party that weren't effected by magics crossed. It took about 30 seconds for the people on the outside to cross, but because of the odd magics, time fluctuated, and that 30 seconds became 5 years for the people inside the hole. So what the characters inside are stuck not knowing what happened, how long they'll be stuck and no way of escaping, magic or otherwise.

At the time I had a couple of roleplaying inept characters so nothing really fun came from it. But we started talking about what some of their current characters would do in that situation. How it would change them, how long till they snapped, what they'd do, how they would react with another character stuck with them, all of that. The more we started talking about it the more interesting it got and it really makes you start to think about your characters psyches, as well as how they associate with other characters.

Here's a couple of my characters:

Urand (my dwarven illithid slayer (fighter/psion essentially) from our vancouver campaign)
Urand was always very cold, especially after turning into a vampire, even when he turned back he never really returned to the person he was, he just wanted to keep killing Illithids. After a month or so Urand would probably just stop talking if he had anyone down with him. Going through so much psychic and mental trauma over the years, as well as dying, undying and almost completely loosing himself once before (vampire complications) he'd just start tuning out anything that was the reality in his brain and try to forget all the things that happened, in turn loosing just about all the personality he had, and fall into this zombie like state never really waking even after escaping the hole. He'd be aware but just lost, lost in the nothing of his brain.

Vierus - (my archer, also from our vancouver campaign) Vierus had been through a hell of a lot through his life, including being captured by a dragon and kept by it for some like 80 years, with it doing who knows what to him during that time. But Vierus had also seen just about every person he ever knew or met die, and he was to blame for killing a handful of them. After being with a dragon for so long he may have come to terms with a lot of it but may still be very bitter. In the end of his travels Vierus hated everyone he was with, he was grateful to them for saving him, but hated them. He would immediately become paranoid, sure that they would all snap soon and keep his eyes out constantly, possibly not sleeping. After a couple months regardless of whether or not they were snapping hed be done. He'd either snap accept everything hes done and fall into this false reality that hes just a killer so he might as well kill all these people anyway and then he would as they all silently slept. Or he'd realize and understand that he wasn't really this horrible killer but still realize that he may never escape and even if he did he wouldn't be able to stay with anyone stuck with him and kill himself. If he was stuck alone Vierus could easily wait, hes very patient, he might get a little quirky and perhaps a little insane, being away from nature, but any side effects would be minor.

Twitch - (from many campaigns) Really the only thing that is keeping Twitch sane in the first place is a constantly changing reality, that he can actually interact with. He gets bored easily. Whatever happened to him would really depend on the people he was with if any. For the first couple weeks Twitch would stay optimistic and keep himself busy with everyone and, of course, not stop talking. After about the frist two weeks all the talking would be done, and ANYONE or EVERYONE that would be down there with him, unless maybe they were a gnome. At which point being yell at to shut up twitch would just start building and attempting to stay optimistic, and keep talking. If he could last a month, then hed soon be out of whatever materials he had and completely lost as to what to do. If he could reach this point without someone cracking and killing him I'd be amazed, especially if it was anyone like Zyress or Rurik he'd probably be dead within the first week. But he could possibly save himself and everyone by making an illusion world for all of them to survive in and stay complete sane in, the problem would be getting everyone out of it. Or Hed completely break all the horrors that hes been through as well as the life he had before and lost would catch up with him and hed become completely insane, anyone with him would probably kill him or knock him unconcious for their own safety. If anyone else wished to as well, they could easily break Twitch, all he really has keeping him optimistic is his how naive he is, and if someone wished they could destroy that and just completely break his soul.

hmmm... kinda makes you wonder. if YOU were trapped in a small, dark area for 5 years, breathing out of a bottle which you may or may not have to share with other people... what would you do?

...

where would you poop...?
