Taking Over

Prologue

My name is Laucian Elensar. I am an Elf warrior of the kingdom of Rodiania. I grew up in a small Elf community of nomads that traveled throughout the vast Rodianian forest. When I was old enough, the elders trained me in archery and swordsmanship. I excelled with the bow and gained proficiency with long sword. The elder shaman taught me medical techniques; such as patching someone up, stopping blood loss, and treating illness. He also taught me about the ways of the Raven Queen. The ideals of death is natural, and to stop those to cast off the chains of fate. The chief trained me to be aware of my surroundings at all times. My final test before my training was complete was to survive in the forest for one full week alone without being detected by two scouts. In that week I learned to live off the land and to hide my presence. After completing my trained, we went our separate ways. I headed to the city outside the forest to in list as an agent to the king. They gave me a low level position. I didn’t realize that it was all political if you wanted to move up, if you didn’t have diplomatic skills you weren’t going to move up. Since I am a “rookie” I usually end up with the ****ty assignments, things like tracking low class criminals that have fled the city for taking something as meaningless as a shops “precious valuables”, or tracking down animals in the forest to document. Like I said the assignments I get are pretty low key and lame.

My latest assignment has me in the city capital Sharrin doing a threat assessment. In the past few years there has been a raise of demons/devils (I can’t really tell the difference between the two types they all look the same to me) in the world. One race in particular is called Teifling, they are pretty low class in the demon world. They are a mixture of humans and the devil himself. They usually have redskin, solid color eyes (red, yellow, white), horns, a demon tail, you know what I mean. Well anyway my assignment was to follow this Teifling by the of Malik and determine his threat level, nothing more, nothing less, in other words its pretty boring work.

I’ve been following Malik for three days now and have found that he has a pretty regular schedule. He would stay at the Eldermagic Inn at night. In the morning he would leave there and wonder around town for most of the day (I am pretty sure he was lost), he hid his heritage pretty well. He would find himself at the same tavern every evening (which was located right next to the Inn he was staying in, lucky for him). On this particular evening he decided to sit at a card table with two elderly gentlemen in robes. I didn’t notice until now but on the seat next to Malik sat a very odd looking cat I didn’t pay any mind to it until now but that cat has been with him since I started following him.

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 1: choosing sides

That evening went on like normal, lots of drinking; stories of heroism and villainy were told by all. Then something very strange happened a giant flash of light burst through the tavern windows and in that moment the two elderly men sitting at the card table disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Following not even two seconds afterwards everyone’s weapons came to life and attacked their wielders. A Halflings that was sitting at a table near me draw a dagger uncontrollably and throw it at me barely missing me and pinning my cloak to the bar. Oddly enough both Malik and I were unaffected by this wild magic attack, none of our weapons were attacking us. After the massacre I removed the dagger pinning me to the bar and place it in an empty sheath on my side, I then immediately began to search for survivors. Strangely the only ones to survive were the ones that didn’t get attacked by their own weapons, Malik, myself, and an odd dwarf that went by the name of Morgrin. While Malik was busy looting the corpses I had just got done checking the last body for any sign of life when I heard creaking. I look around to find the whole tavern is blackened and we only had a few minutes of time before the whole place collapsed. When I turned to go to the door I notice another strange happening at one window it was midday and at the other window it was the middle of the night. I rushed to the door and opened it up to find it showing a sunrise/sunset (I couldn’t really tell). All three places also showed a different environment; grassy field, desert, and forest. We all quickly agreed to go to through the window of night.

We end up on a road leading two ways, we discovered the window was floating in air only a few feet off the ground but on the other side nothing was there. We felt it was safest to walk the direction that the window wasn’t facing incase of a blast. After a few minutes of walking we hear a very loud crashing sound. We walked all through the night and for half the day before we came across a town. It was a medium sized town, as we walked up to it we found it to be completely empty, not a soul around. We all split up to search the city. I went looking for food and water but only found rotten food and an old jug of ale. About one hour later we came together to share our information with each other. The town was a ghost town, Morgin was able to find some ragged clothes and Malik found some smoke off in the distance. We went to the direction of the smoke in hopes of finding someone. After about a half an hours walk we come to a house surrounded by a tall wall with spikes at the top. After investing for a few minutes we discovered no one was home at the moment. The smoke was coming from a small fire on the other side of the wall where someone was cooking some kind of stew.

We wait until night fell, I was on first watch when all of sudden I heard strange howls. Not a minute later three wolves appear, they looked very strange like they hadn’t eaten in weeks, they were skin and bones and their eyes were pure white. As they came closer I quickly woke up Malik and Morgin for some assistance. They moved in for the attack I drew my bow and fired two arrows at two of the animals. Morgrin held off two of them while Malik fired off blasts of magic at the other. I took down one wolf that tired to bring Morgrin to the ground with a few more arrows to the head. Malik took out the one attacking him with a magic beam that left a large hole rib cage. The last wolf leaped for me when with a swing of Morgrins hammer dropped the wolf before it could reach me. We took a few minutes to catch our breaths and in that time a humanoid figure comes walking up from the distance. We ready ourselves for another fight, but as the figure comes closer it appears to be a humanoid dragon man dragging a deer.

Lucky for us he was a man of good intent. He was very friendly and invited us into the manner behind the wall. It was a very tricky wall to get past you had to push in a brick that opened up a hidden door. We talked for a while and found out that the city we were in was called Nube, the dragon man was actually a rare race called “Dragonborn” and he was named Nadar. We also discover that the area is infested with undead. I made a deal with Nadar that if we helped him take care of one undead in particular that has been giving him quit a bit of trouble that he would take us to the nearest city that he knew of which was about a month of travel. He described his undead nemesis as a humanoid bunny monster zombie.

After waiting for a couple of nights the creature showed itself in the middle of the night. He leaped over the wall like it was a puddle. The creature was the size of two humans put together and had long dangly arms that reached its feet. All of us focused our attacks on the creature as it leaped around. Nadar’s sword glowed a bright blue and white color from time to time as he shouted curses at the creature. Just as it made a leap for Nadar, Morgrin smashed its skull in.

The next day we headed for the nearest town called Wavecrest. It was going to take us about twice as long as normal travel because along the way I was searching for food for the group each day. We traveled along the forest lucky enough for us we encounter few threats along the way; a couple of goblin raiders attacked but we easily dispatched them unfortunately one of them was a caster and fled before we could finish him off.

We had gone about month of walking when something strange happened as we were walking along the cat starts acting funny. Then in a brief instant I saw a glimpse of a castle wall surrounding us. Nadar keeps walking and turns to ask us if we were coming but in that instant we disappeared. We then become surrounded by castle walls and were standing around a strange well. Off to the side were two large double doors, we went through the doors to investigate what happened. Inside was something completely surreal. It was a sanctuary, inside had 4 pillars and a pyramid stairway leading up to an alter. Each pillar paid tribute to a certain season. We went up to the alter to inspect when Malik just jumped top of the block at the top of the alter and disappeared. Since there was no where else to go we followed suit. When I got up on the alter everything froze and turned black and white the four pillars turned into four spiritual beings. One was a male, red and orange colored and bared the sun symbol. Another was indistinguishable from male or female, green and bared a symbol I can’t call to mind but I am sure it had something to do with spring. Another was a female, blue in color and bared a symbol of the moon and a snowflake mixed. The last one was also indistinguishable from male or female, purple color and had a stars for a symbol. They all said in unison “you must choose your allegiance wisely” and then four doors glow the associated colors of the spirits. Being that I warship the Raven Queen naturally I would choose to the one that represents her. After I walked through the glowing blue door I reappeared next to Nadar.

It was as if time stood still when we left. We paid no mind to it for the moment and continued to Wavecrest. Unfortunately for us along the way we were attacked by a tribe of Orcs. We made it though the fight but Nadar sacrificed his life to save Morgrin. A week or so later we were attacked by a giant spider, we smashed it though. The strangest thing of all though is that a few days before we reached Wavecrest was that we were attacked by five zombie corpses that we past a few days prior. A zombie spider, a zombie dragon (we encounter the corpse and a swarm of rats came from the body), and three orc zombies. We had to flee I was too low on arrows to fight them off.

Lucky for us we made it to Wavecrest in one piece, where our next adventure will begin…

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 2: Rescue

Upon our arrival we immediately encounter trouble, Malik is spotted right away as a demon by the wall guards. I step aside and allow them to take him away (the worst case would be to have to break out, no problem). Wavecrest was a small community full of mostly farmers and a small weak militia. We encountered an interesting human outlaw by the name of “Dash”. That night he decided to be a “hero” and break out Malik but first he would try to rob from all the townspeople. I think even the people over at Bordega heard him try breaking into houses. So he was thrown in jail for the night. The next morning we invested what was going on. Morgrin and I discovered the town had been having some trouble with Tieflings lately. They naturally thought Malik was apart of their “clan”. We convinced them that he was not and we agreed to help them. It turns out that they stole a valuable orb from the town sage and took a wife’s elderly husband. They gave us the location to where they were camping.

Their camp was in a valley in the forest, so we traveled there for about a day and a half. Along the way we encountered a strange looking lizard woman priestess with a few body guards headed in the opposite direction of us (in other words they were headed straight for the town). I recalled to mind that that particular race was heavily into cults, and that they frequently sacrifice humans. So we decide to stop them, after killing off her guards not a few seconds later they rise up as zombies. She threw around a lot of fire magic, but we took them all out without much of a problem.

When we reached the Tiefling it was nightfall, the perfect time to attack or rather sneak in and steal. We came up with the plan of Dash and I would sneak in on one side and Morgrin and Malik cause a distraction on the other. Of course they don’t do their job but we sneak in successfully anyway. The only one on watch was a Tiefling Warlock with a “pet” it was some sort of dragon or rather a cousin to the dragon (it couldn’t fly). When we got into the tent I immediately spot the kidnapped old man, and of course Dash spots a chest. I pick up the old man and run him back to our rendezvous point. And I guess Dash slit all the sleeping Tieflings throats.

After we met up, Dash sort of became obsessed with finding that orb so he wanted to stay back, Malik stayed with him and Morgin went with me to take the old man back home. We weren’t rewarded with much since all we brought back was the old man (the sage wasn’t very interested in that). About a day later Dash and Malik came back empty handed leaving us to make our next plan of attack…

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 3: The Chosen

We all went our separate ways to gather information about possible jobs. I decided to ask about the Raven Queen a.k.a. the Winter Queen in Wavecrest. There wasn’t anything new to learn that I already didn’t know. I came across a guy covered in armor that claimed to be the emissary of the Raven Queen and then smashed a chair over my head shouting crazy claims of me being ignorant to the proper teachings of the Raven Queen. I fell to the floor unconscious and was drug away by the emissary…

I woke up to a blurred image that becomes an Eladrin (elf variation) in robes standing over me. I quickly jump to my feet and get ready to defend myself. Malik yells to me to stop me and explains that he is a friend. Turns out he is a new arrival from the Eladrin Council sent to assist Wavecrest. The Eladrin’s name is Emril. After a brief greeting I look around to find the emissary unconscious a few feet away from me.

I looked around the room we were standing in and saw that in this circular room tall dragon statues lined the area. Off to the side was I was told this runic platform was some sort of teleport elevator. On the opposite side laid a glowing blue barrier blocking passage down a long hallway with a being stood on the other side. When we approached the barrier the creature was someone sort of air based creature. He was put there to guard to passage and to only allow someone to pass as long as they could answer the question, “Who was the most powerful living being?” I figured it was some sort of dragon. It was kind of being that the room was filled with dragons, but it was Emril who was able to give the name of a dragon. It was too ridiculous of name to remember let alone pronounce correctly. All that matters is that the being took it as the correct answer and removed the barrier and disappeared.

After we walked down the long hallway we came to another circular room, except this room was much smaller and didn’t have dragon statues all along the walls. In this room there was only one thing in it and it stood in the center of the room, it was a clear glass case with an orb floating in it. The case was large enough to fit two tall people inside. The orb that floated inside was a glowing winter blue and white color.

Apparently that’s what they were looking for; they weren’t there to rescue me I just got lucky. Malik explains to me that they encountered three other glass cases just like this one and each time they broke the case creatures would appear and attack them. Well I came up with an idea to have Emril teleport inside the case instead of breaking it. He jump in the case, grabbed the orb and teleported back out. Unfortunately for us a creature spawned the exact moment Emril appeared outside the case. The creature formed from a blue mist that twisted into a dragon shape. The only part of it that was solid and colored was the horn on its head.

I react immediately to its appearance and fire a couple of arrows at it, nailing the dragon in the side. The dragon then shot a bolt of lightning at Emril which chained off to Malik and me. Malik and Emril both fire bolts of magic at dragon, both hitting him in the face. The difference between Malik and Emril’s magic is difficult to tell with me, but all I can really tell you is that they both are students of the arcane arts. Emril reads tomes, scrolls, and studies intensely to use his powers. Malik gained his power by making a pact with a cat, believe it or not, it’s true. If you want to know how or why, you need to ask him. Well anyways I am straying away from the story. After they threw they magic bolts at the dragon I fired more arrows at the dragon, hitting in the leg and arm. The dragon started to slowly turn from a blue glowing mist into real scales and claws. He shot blue spheres of lightning at Malik, Emril, and I. he began to target each of us one at a time knocking Emril out first, followed by Malik. As soon as Malik went down I rushed over to aid him. After I brought him back from unconsciousness I unfortunately received the full fury of the dragon. He clawed and gored at me as I leaped back and immediately drop to one knee. I started to treat those wounds on the spot and rushed over to Emril to wake him from unconsciousness. Malik was quick to avoid the dragon’s wrath. After dodging his attacks, Malik teleported inside the glass case in the center of the room. Malik quickly became the target of the dragons furry. He discovered that his magic will still work on the dragon. While the dragon’s attacks bounced off the glass. That is until I nailed the dragon in the eye with two arrows, then I received the dragons full attention. We went back and forth missing attacks between one another and both bleeding massively. With one final blast from Emril the dragon drops to the floor. I quickly rush up, draw my sword and run my blade through the dragon’s skull.

After that close call victory we decided to call it a day and go home. Malik led the way out of the dungeon to the entrance where Morgrin was waiting. It took us about half a day’s walk to get back to Wavecrest. We decided to keep the orb a secret for the moment. As soon as we arrived a young lad came running up with two letters one was to “the devil man” obviously that was to Malik but the other was addressed to an elf, but Elf and Eladrin are too closely similar in appearance to tell the difference. Since I had been in town the longest we decided to it was for me. The letter said:

Your presence is requested immediately
-winter

I wasn’t sure what that meant so I asked Emril about it and he had no idea what that was about either. We each split up, Malik had a meeting to go to from his letter, Emril went to report to the Council, Morgrin went with me to report back to the sage about what we found. As soon as we arrived the sage told me someone was waiting inside for me. I went inside while Morgrin spoke to the sage.

As soon as I walked in the temperature dropped from a nice early summer to below freezing. At the table sat a woman who invited me to sit down. After talking for a few minutes, she explained to me that the emissary (the man in the armor that knocked me out) lost his position and currently I am the most qualified to take up the task as the Winter Queens emissary. I accepted the offer and as soon as I accepted room didn’t feel as cold as it did when I first arrived. She told me I was to control the orb we found. Before we departed she told me that I would receive another message by the weeks end.

I asked to hold onto the orb from morgrin who was the current possessor of it. He agreed and I took it for safe keeping. We all go together a little while later, we all decided to take a break and rest for the week. During the week I taught the town’s militia swordsmanship and archery.

At the end of the week the same lad come up to me with and told me someone wanted to see me and that they were waiting for me behind the sage’s manner. This time it was a different women and she told me of another orb that I needed to get, this orb was located all the way in Bordega. The problem was that Bordega was an entire continent of its own and I was on a very short time limit. I gathered everyone else and explained to them that we need to go get another orb but couldn’t get it unless we had long distance teleportation to which we had no means. Malik had another task to destroy the orb we currently have (I wasn’t going to allow) but also spoke of a great treasury. Emril came with orders from Eladrin Council to take care of a cult to the south. So we were left with three choices and only one of which we can work on…

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 4: Decisions (part 1)

After discussing our options and looking over a map we figured out that Emril’s task is along the way to Malik’s task. We all agreed that my task was impossible to complete without any means of long distance teleportation. So the plan is to head to south east Rodiania to stop a growing cult.

Emril explains that the cult warships a deity named Orcus, and that the area that they occupy is in a wild magic zone. Apparently they are working on a device to control the wild magic. Unfortunately he didn’t have any more information for us so we left immediately and headed back to Nube since it was along the way to the city we were actually going to which was called Scyladon. The make it to the city as fast as possible we grabbed a couple of horses.

Not even a half a days ride went by before we were stopped by two short creatures with hooded over their faces standing in the middle of the road. I inquired what they wanted, they spoke in Draconic a language generally voiced by dragons, but creatures of dragon decent also spoke this language. As they spoke they pulled down their hoods to reveal their draconic heritage. These creatures were called “Kobold” they were only about two to three feet tall, red eyes, orange scaly skin, claw like a raptor, and their head were shaped like a dragons. They held the most likeness to a dragon without the wings and when they spoke their voices were high pitched and squeaky like a mouse caught in a trap. Their demands were to return the orb that we took, and while they spoke one of them was making funny gestures with his hands.

At this point I noticed that little swarms of bugs were crawling all over the ground beneath us in a thirty foot radius. I kicked the horse to move it out of the bugs and warned the others of an impending attack. Two more Kobolds jump up from the grass from behind us, and fire arrows at Malik. The swarms of bugs split up into three smaller swarms, and begin devouring the other horses. I fire arrows at the two Kobolds in front, while Morgrin tries to smash the swarms of bugs with his hammer. The two Kobolds in the front begin to fire bolts of electrical magic at Morgrin and me. Emril tries to help Morgrin out by burning the swarms with magical fire. Malik holds off the two archers in the back as much as he can. I quickly dispatch the Kobold mages with a few more arrows to the chest and move in to assist Malik with the remaining two kobolds. Morgrin and Emril worked together to stamp out the remaining swarms, but not before the swarms could finish off all but one of our horses. The Kobold archers tired to flee, but I took them out with two well placed arrows to their backs.

Now we were left with one horse, so Morgin and Emril road on the horse and Malik and I walked. Fortunately for us a few days into travel we came across an approaching slave caravan. The caravan had two horses pulling it, and we needed two horses. Leading the horse sat a Tiefling and to his left and right flank, are two bodyguards covered in armor. Sitting next to him was I think what appeared to be some sort of priest. So I figure its ironic justice if we were to take away everything they had and free what slaves they kept.

I crouched down into the tall grass off the road, and told Morgin to approach them and begin the assault on the caravan. I slowly made my way up to the caravan trying not to be seen. Morgin makes small talk with the slavers before one of them told him he was in the way and demanded that he moved and in that moment he drew his hammer and smashed it on the armor of one of the guards. I stood up and fired an arrow right into the chest of the Tiefling dropping him to a knee. The Tiefling tries to go around the caravan to gain some cover and yells for the others to kill me. Emril and Morgin bombard one armored guard, while Malik distracts the other armored guard with his blasts of magic. I rush around to the other side of the caravan to where the Tiefling is taking cover and drop him with two more arrows to the chest. The priest goes running to his aid, but before he could start patching him up I plant one more arrow through his head. The priest turns to me in rage and rushes at me. I duck and weave through his attacks making him more enraged. I sling my bow around my back and draw my sword. I counter the priest’s attacks, and with one swift slash through the abdomen he falls. In the meantime one of the guards breaks away from the assault and grabs and amulet from a chest on the caravan. With a few enchanting words in a demonic tongue he disappears and in his place forms a blood red creature. This creature appears to be some kind of demon, as he forms he is covered in black armor and chains but leaving his head and arms exposed. His eyes are a deep yellow; the last parts of him that formed were his long horns and wings. He arms himself with a long sword that erupted in flames. Malik is quick on the draw and fires bolts of magic at the demon. Emril does the same, and Morgrin follows up with a swing of his hammer. I swiftly sheath my sword and rearm myself with my bow, I puck a couple of arrows at the demon hitting it in the shin and calf. The demon retaliates by making a cut through Morgin’s armor. Malik and Emril both fire magic bolts and the demon; dropping him to his knees. With the demons last breath, he shouts a curse at us in a demonic tongue and disappears back to the hell that it came from.

After the bloody battle we free the slaves, but only two of the five slaves survived the torture they had put them through on their travel. A male dwarf and a female half elf were the slaves that survived. We spoke to them for awhile, but didn’t have anything interesting to say. We offered them a safe trip with us to Scyladon and they graciously accepted. We took off the cage and turning the caravan into a mere cart.

We safely made our way all the way through Nube and made it about half way between Nube and Scyladon before we came across something that caught my eyes. We pulled up to what seemed like a traveling Halfling Circus. We were greeted and offered many events: they have fortune telling, a full bar, palm reading, and a bunch of fun little games. The fortune telling intrigued me so I went in the tent.

The elderly women sat in front of a crystal ball, she has me sit in front of her. She begins by showing off with some flashy flair and smoke. She then falls unconscious and begins to convulse. I go to her aid but nothing I do helps, after a minute she stops and regains consciousness. She explains to me that normally she would just make something up but this time she had real visions, visions of me in the winter, with images of two women watching over me. In the dreams I possessed two, orbs one of which I knew how to control and the other I didn’t. I had two acrobatic short people, they were like Halfling, but different. She also dreamt of a giant tree in this winter setting that I was in. I thanked her for the fortune telling and paid her well. I went back to the group and we enjoyed the rest of day at the circus playing games.

The next day we went back on our journey to Scyladon. We made most of the way without any interruptions until one night while I was on watch three mysteriously beings approached us. They came to us to offer us corrupt power, I woke up the other, and Morgin charged in. the beings we engaged battle with were pale and had and air about them that just didn’t sit right with Morgrin or me. They were covered in cloth and you couldn’t see their faces very well. They weren’t very tough to fight but the strange thing was that when someone killed one of those creatures they exploded in a cloud of black smoke? I have never seen something so strange before.

The next day we continued our trip, we finally arrived at Scyladon at about midday. As soon as we entered the city Malik goes running off while the rest of us go around asking about the Orcus Cult. After spending the afternoon asking around and coming up with nothing Malik shows up explaining that he found a way to get to the cult. So we agreed to help him and he told us that we had to be at the docks at about midnight. That’s the one thing I didn’t really like about Malik he tends to leave very important details out.

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 4: Decisions (part 2)

Midnight rolls around and we show up at the docks where a man is waiting to greet us, I guess he has a boat ready for us. He was taking us to a city called Skullcrest. I didn’t really like the idea of leaving but I went along anyway. The boat ride took about a full day before we ended up at another harbor.

After a quick look around Emril recognized this city and explained that Skullcrest is a do what you want rule free city. People will look the other way when a crime is committed in this city. I ask Malik what our next move is, and of all things he forgets who we are supposed to meet with. So we split up and try to figure out where we are supposed to be.

I notice that a lot of people walking around have a red dragon tattoo, only the dragon fangs are exaggerated. I suspect that the city is under the control of a cult. I grab a thug and question him. He couldn’t really give me very many answers, but he could lead me to their base of operations. Once there I figure out that our meeting takes places and back at the harbor. I collect everyone and we all gather at the meeting.

The guy that we end up meeting with is an elderly gentleman with a long white beard. He tells us that our job is to steal a holy artifact from the Peylorian Church. I pull the group away from him and immediately begin protesting this job. It didn’t make any sense to make more enemies just to take out one sect of a cult. Peylor is the symbol of all good and light. I wouldn’t really call myself good but I am certainly not evil, and it didn’t make any sense to make the good side an enemy to us. We continued this argument for a long time we eventually went on the boat and traveled to an island under the control of the Peylorian Church. After looking around for awhile we figure out nothing is strange about this location. So we get invited in and offered a place to stay. We find a private table to sit at outside and begin our discussion again whether or not it’s a good idea to steal this artifact. After awhile Morgin gets tired of listen to Malik and I argue he gets up and walks away. He comes back and grabs me to talk in private. Morgrin explains to me that he found the symbol and we wouldn’t actually have to steal it, they guy who owns it is willing to trade it for three hundred gold piece and together Morgin and I had enough to buy it from him. Turns out that the holy artifact isn’t really a holy artifact and that is just an amulet. We agreed but he had to make it look like we stole it.

We go back and I give up and agree with the group to steal it. That night I wake up to a loud crash. I rush outside to see what happened to only find the others beat me there. The clerics were building a chapel about ten yards off from the main church sanctum. I notice that the giant symbol they were trying to hang had fallen to the ground. As we got closer I see that the man from earlier was on his knees picking up papers scattered all over the ground. Turns out he just was at the wrong place at the wrong time, so we offer to help clean up. As I am picking up papers, I notice the amulet we are after laying in grass. I swiftly pocket the amulet before anyone else noticed me.

After picking up all the papers the man takes his leave and I let everyone know that I swiped the amulet when no one noticed. So we went back to our room quickly packed up and left back to Skullcrest.

We give the amulet to the old man waiting for us at the harbor and are rewarded with a thousand gold pieces a person, to which we promptly spend it on new gear. After getting some supplies and gained more trust with this organization we are apparently working for, we receive our next task…

Re: Taking Over

Chapter 5: Betrayal

We are told to kill an entire city of people so that this organization can regain control over that area. We are given a rock and told to break it when we were done and it will return us here, we were also being short range teleported to the city. In just an instant we disappeared.

I reappear in a plain of pure snow, and a young female with a long black cloak on standing before me. She expresses her disappointment and explains to me that teleportation is a funny thing; anyone can be “plucked” from one destination and placed in another location if someone so desires and wields the power to do so. She then wonders why I have not gone after the orb she specified. I explain to her that there was no way to get to the orb in time without long range teleportation. Lucky I am forgiven and given another chance, there is another orb in the location we are after, and she wants me to retrieve it. She then teleports me to where my companions ended up.

I reappear in the middle of a strange circular platform raised about five feet off the ground with runes around the outer edge. In the room there stands three being a top the stairs in front of me. The one in the center is a Tiefling. The one to his left was a Drow which is an evil black skinned elf that live underground. The one to his right was some sort of lizard man.

To my back my companions stand ready for a fight. They stand with one more though, this man stood with him, he looked familiar but I just couldn’t remember. He carried a cloak with the Raven Queen’s symbol on it and wields a large sword with both hands. Before I can look around a battle ensures.

Two more lizard men come running down the stairs from a place I couldn’t see and blast curse beams at me barely missing. Two giant spiders jump down from the wall above the door where my companions come from and target Emril and Malik. The Drow starts shooting webs at me and hits slowing me down. Out of nowhere a goblin runs out from the outer edge of the platform and charges one of the spiders. I return fire at the lizard men firing one arrow at each of them. The man with the Raven Queen cloak runs after the lizard men saying his name is “Raven” and asking for someone named “Markus”. The Tiefling answers with saying it is himself, and fires blast of magic at Raven. The goblin catches up with Raven and tells him to toss him up there with them. Emril, Malik, and Morgrin work together to fight off the two spiders. I continue to fire more arrows at the two lizard men and they fire more curse blasts at me but actually hit and weakening me for a few seconds. The Drow starts shooting more webs at us, this time targeting Raven, hitting and hindering him. Raven picks up the Goblin and manages to toss him up to Markus. As the goblin came down he ties to stab at Markus but the instant he connects Markus erupts in flames and disappears leaving the goblin standing alone between two enemies. Emril, Malik, and Morgrin continue to fight off the spiders. The drow starts speaking and calls the spiders up to him. The spiders then surround the goblin and start attacking him. The Goblin rolls out of the way and jumps back down to the platform. I plant two more arrows in one of the lizard men at the bottom of the stairs dropping him. The other lizard man retreats up the stairs. Raven begins to work his way up the stairs and stabs at the lizard man. The Drow yells for the spiders to continue to attacking the goblin. Emril, Malik and I work together to target one spider, and bring it down with just a couple of shots through the head. The Drow calls the remaining spider back and he climbs up on it and begins riding it, but as he gets a top the spider I bring the spider down with two well placed arrows through its head. The Drow tires to flee and shouts in a strange language that Malik translates as the Drow asking us for assistance escaping and he will lead us to the orb. He jumps down and tries heading for the doors in the back. The lizard man at the top of the stairs turns to face the Drow and throws a green bolt of magic at him. I notice that the goblin had fallen unconscious from the spider poison so I run over to aid him. The Drow throws up a giant black cloud around himself obscuring all site of him. The lizard man throws more green bolts of magic into the cloud in hopes of hitting the Drow. After bring the goblin back from unconsciousness I rush over into the cloud of darkness to aid the Drow’s escape. The others quickly dispatch the remaining enemies. I pick the fallen Drow and bring him to safety.

As I tend to the Drow’s wounds I get slashed through the side by Raven. I jump back and question why he attacked me? Raven demands his position back as emissary to the Winter Queen and continues to come at me with his large sword this time barely missing. I retreat into what is now a cavern, I manage to get away because Ravens heavy armor slows him down and I am unencumbered. I devise a plan to take down Raven and try to sneak up on him. The Goblin comes along to find me and warn me of Raven’s plan. I thank him and ask him his name. The Goblins name is Clip Clop and he was a slave under the Tiefling and we freed him.

As we return I notice from behind me Malik and Raven trying to sneak up on me. I turn quickly and fire a powerful shot at Raven weakening him. I then take cover around the corner and wait for them to come around the corner. They then threaten me by saying that if I don’t give up they will kill the Drow. I refuse and I hear Revan turn and walks away. Malik comes around the corner watching me. I move around the corner and try to hit Revan but miss. Then Malik betrays me and viciously hits me with one of his Warlock blasts. I turn around and return fire back onto him. He takes a few steps back and teleports away. I go to the door to not see him anywhere. Around the corner Malik shows himself and fires more of his Warlock beams at me. I return fire and drop him unconscious. I shut and locked the door and make sure his bleeding stops and bring him to the others. After talking with the others for a while, I wake Malik up, but as soon as I do he begins shouting how it’s all my fault the drow died and now we won’t ever find the orb and said he would kill me. He was overcome with madness and clearly chose his side with the madman Raven. I grew tired of Malik’s treachery; I drew my sword and ran it through Malik.

We found a secret room in the larger room where the first battle took place. In this room we found some maps and a smaller teleportation circle that functioned like this: when you use a teleportation spell, the destination that you choose is changed and you get teleported to a location the creator of the circle chooses. Remembering the stone we received from the old man I picked it up from Malik’s body and stand on the circle, we then break it and disappear.
We reappear in a next to a tavern, Emril recognized it from earlier apparently I missed about eight hours of time while I had my brief conversation with the Winter Queen. Emril runs in and asks about the Tiefling being seen and we are directed down an underground passage.

We encounter a few undead along way and smash them quickly as well as an ooze before reaching a group of traveling Dwarves, one claims to be the king of Dwarves. We ask if they had seen a Tiefling pass though here. After talking for awhile the king actually helped him, and was willing to help us after I told him he threatened to take his crown. He sent one of bodyguards with us.
We walk down the right path and find a Dragonborn waiting for us. He wants the orb that we are carrying and of course a fight ensued. Being that it was a five to one fight we quickly dispatch him and move on. In the room stands a giant set of doors. We search the room and find a couple of hidden skulls and one of them lights up and fires blasts of fire, ice, and lightning at Clob Clop knocking him unconscious.

We decide to rest until he woke up, in mid rest we get interrupted by a traveling bugbear claiming we were in his territory. We pay him off and hopefully get through the rest of the night without anymore interruptions…
